The section affairs, at this time of the year, seem to be taking a different approach! With our growing Foundation and a lot of neatprogramming initiatives planned for 2011, we have been very busy. We have placed anemphasis on allowing the opportunity for our members to complete their MSR Cycle byJune 15, 2011. With that in mind, we have conducted two Town Hall Meetings with theintention of two more. The goal is to reach out to all of our members and especially theindividuals in the areas that are outside of St. Louis. We cover a variety of topics andprovide our members with an opportunity to provide us with some feedback. I want tothank the staff at Jefferson City CC for hosting our meeting in Out State Missouri. Also,I would like to thank the staff at Crab Orchard for allowing us the same opportunity inSouthern Illinois. I ask all of our members to keep in mind the difference with this MSRcycle in comparison to past cycles. The PGA mandates that we complete a total of 54MSR points in a cycle. These points are to include 12 “education” credits as well as 12“meeting” credits. Meeting credits can only come from specific assemblies thatinclude: Spring and Fall Meetings, Town Hall Meetings, or other meetings that wouldinclude officers of the national or section office. Please pay attention to your currentstatus which can be accessed through PGALinks.MSR CYCLE ENDSJUNE 15, 2011Don't forget the CurrentMSR cycle will be endingon June 15, 2011. If you areunsure about your creditsplease log in towww.pgalinks.com. Oncethere you will see asummary of your MSRcredits on top right.Teachers Teaching TeachersThe Gateway Tournament and Junior Golf schedules are coming together nicely. We arestill in search of a few more facilities. Please contact Steve Finn if you have interest inhosting an event. We recently added a spring program for our junior members. Theresponse from our juniors, their parents, and our facilities has been remarkable. We havealready filled all of the locations and will soon be promoting the opportunities to ourjunior golfers. In the coming weeks, we will send out information that will provide yourfacility with the opportunity to promote your junior golf initiatives. You will see anemphasis on driving revenue to you. We can provide the resource,www.gatewaypga.org, as the place where we drive our juniors and their parents. On oursite they will be able to find a listing of all of our junior camps, clinics, and lessonopportunities from the Gateway Professionals who advertise. In addition, we would liketo see our facilities, which could use professional help with junior camps, to allow thesection to match our professionals who are looking for teaching opportunities. We willbe providing much more details in the coming weeks. The most important news, on the Junior front, is the addition of Kelly Newland as ournew Junior Golf Director. The Gateway PGA staff is extremely excited about the arrivalof Kelly. He is going to be a wonderful addition to our staff. Please take a moment towelcome Kelly when he arrives in January. If you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to contact me at anytime. Iwish our facilities and all of our members a safe and happy holidays.

I will not cover every detail as I’m sure most watched live on PGA links. If you were unable towatch, it is available to view on the web-site.One of the more pressing issues facing the association currently is MSR and the approaching end to the cycle on June15, 2011. We currently have more than 40% of the class a members in need of MSR points. Many are in the educationcomponent, but more are lacking in the meeting component. When the new MSR program was rolled out in June of2008, a new meeting component was added requiring all members to attend at least 12 hours of meetings. These can bea combination of national, sectional, chapter or town hall meetings. I just so happens that we, Josh and the officers, wereplanning on heading to the geographical “corners” of the section to have town hall meetings anyway. So… if you are inneed of meeting credits or just want to share your thoughts about the section, we would love to have you join us. Ourfirst town hall meeting was scheduled for November 30th at Jefferson City CC. Thanks Mike Wensing and your stafffor hosting us. We are currently finalizing dates and times for Northern and Southern IL as well as St. Louis. The topics and presentations centered much on the future and how our approach to marketing and growing the gamewill need to change. Many have surmised that the age of email marketing has come to an end and we should considermoving to “social” networking utilities to better communicate with our members and customers. Consider thesestatistics, Facebook (1/2 billion accounts), Twitter (1.3 billion accounts) and the App Store (more than half a millionapps). These are current statistics; Facebook and twitter are showing significant growth each quarter. The averageAmerican spends 4 hours a day in front of some type of display; computer, phone or ipad. This years Annual Meeting was an election year and we had six very qualified candidates seeking the position ofSecretary. In the end Derek Sprague of the Northern New York section was elected. Derek’s message centered on threemain points; education, employment and a through review of all of the PGA programs.I wish all of you the Happiest of Holidays and all the best for the New Year. Please don’t hesitate to contact me withany questions or concerns.Mike Miller, PGAGateway PGASection PresidentAnnouncementsNEW JUNIOR GOLF DIRECTORThe Gateway PGA isexcited to announce oursections new JuniorGolf Director, KellyNewland. For thegolfer, healthy hip joints and pelvicstability are crucial for building astrong foundation that will support agood upper body motion. Withoutgood hip motion and stability it wouldbe like trying to build a humanpyramid with the weakest, leastflexible and unbalanced people on thebottom. It wouldn’t work and thereIn the set-up:• Bending forward at the waist not thehips• Lower back will be curved inwardinstead of flat (S- posture)• Pelvis tucked under excessively• Prefers to set up with a closed oropen stance• Excessive toe flareBackswing• Sway• Over or under rotating the pelvis• Reverse pivot• Increase in knee flex• Lifting out of postureForward swingAlways remember no exercise shouldbe performed to the point ofdiscomfort or pain and alwaysconsult your physician prior tobeginning any exercise program. Ifyou have had a hip replacementconsult with your physician beforedoing any stretches or exercises.Hip Drops: Lie flat on your backwith your knees bent and feetseparated wider than shoulder widthapart. Drop both knees to the rightas far as possible, but maintain astable core and try to keep yourback as close to the ground as

The samething happens in the golf swing.First let’s clarify the differencebetween the hips and the pelvis. Thepelvis is the “bowl” that the hips andspine attach to. The hips are the twojoints where the legs attach to thepelvis. Mobile, healthy hips allow thepelvis to move properly in the golfswing. Here are some of the manyswing characteristics that will showup if a golfer does not have good hipfunction and stability.• Slide• Coming up on the toes• Turning or twisting the lead foot out• Lack of lower body rotation• Bending knees through impact• Staying on trail legThere are over 40 muscles that makeup the “hip cuff” so there are manymovements that can be done to keepyou flexible and strong. By creating amobile and stable hip joint, you willstore and release energy efficiently, creating optimum movement. Here area few to do during the off-season.Enjoy!possible. Now drop knees to theleft. Repeat back and forth 6-10times.Hip Windshield Wipers: Start by lying on your back withyour knees and hips bent to 90 degrees. Make fists with bothhands and place them together between your knees. Now,without separating your hands and knees, try to move your feetas far apart as possible (like windshield wipers). Repeat thismotion back and forth 10-15 times.Hip Crossover Stretch: Begin this stretch by laying flat on your back with both knees upand feet flat on the ground. Next, take your right ankle and cross it over your left knee, andallow the left knee/right ankle complex to fall slowly down to the ground on the LEFT side. While the complex is slowly lowering to the left, place left hand on the RIGHT knee andgently aid this slow lowering of the legs. Once the legs have fallen completely to the left, you may turn your head to the right to try and get the maximum out of the stretch. Alwaysperform this stretch in a very slow and controlled manner, never to the point of pain.Repeat procedure on opposite side. Repeat 3-4 times to each side.Leg Lowering Against a Wall: Lying flat on your back in a doorway, place your right leg up against a wall and yourbackside as close to the wall as possible and stabilize your core. Keeping both legs straight and your spine stable, slowly lower your left leg down to the ground. Repeat this up and down movement for 10-12 repetitions and thenswitch legs.Helen Kurtin is a member of the PGA and LPGA and is the co-founder of Golf Body Performance Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
