Pressure – To Us, it‘s the Most Natural Thingin the WorldSperm Whale[Physeter catodon]The tasty titbits that sperm whales savour over live in deepwater. To swim that deep, they have to be able to withstandhuge buoyancy forces. To enable sperm whales todive into the depths, nature found a solution: It gave spermwhales a 2,000 kg spermaceti, found in the whale‘s head,that is lighter than water at body temperature. By lettingsea water flow in, the spermaceti cools down, and itsdensity becomes greater than the density of the water.This enables the whale to dive down. To rise again, thewhale pushes the sea water back out and increases theflow of blood to the head. That‘s the question that this 7 mm beetleasks itself when facing the frogs, birds, and mice thathunt it. The answer? The beetle has an impressive defencesystem – an explosive chamber in its abdomen. When apredator nears, highly reactive chemicals mix in its body.In a split second, this produces high pressure in the bombardierbeetle‘s abdomen, which the beetle then releaseswith a loud bang in the direction of its enemy.
