2 2CHAIRMAN’S WORDThe National Conference of the Order of Australia Association was held in February in Canberra and was a greatsuccess on all levels. In the Director’s meeting a lot of business was completed and signed off of which more detailswill be forthcoming. The AGM covered another couple of issues where votes were required and all matters werebrought to a conclusion. The big challenge ahead is for us to be the hosts for the 2014 National Conference for theOrder of Australia Association and I am pleased to announce that we already have three confirmed sponsorships –one from Budget Car and Truck Rental, one from the Harold Mitchell Foundation and the third from the GandelGroup. We are endeavouring to have up to 6 major sponsorships that will help to bring down the price of themorning and afternoon teas, lunches, dinners and social events. Some of the events that are already confirmed are a reception hosted by the Governor at Government House,a lecture series at Melbourne University, trips to the Bellarine and Mornington Peninsulas, the Macedon Ranges,Ballarat and Bendigo and also quite a few people are forthcoming with home hosting activities.Early registrations are encouraged and a discount is available for those who participate in this scheme. It will also helpus to determine numbers as some activities are restricted because of capacity on coaches or sightseeing attractions. Ifyou know of someone or would like to be co-opted yourself on one of the conference committees we are lookingfor people to help us with the transport, home hosting, accommodation and tourism aspects of the conference andin particular we will need volunteers to man a registration desk for five days. The conference convener is BoardMember Duncan Stalker OAM and I thank Duncan and his extended team for the excellent work they have alreadyput into this conference by having brochures, dvds and information packs on hand one year out from the event. In relation to the Victoria State Branch it’s nice to be able to formally welcome new members Diane James AM,Julian Stock AM, David Rayner OAM and Richard Williams OAM and in welcoming new members I would alsolike to thank the departing members, Don Hyde AM, Kevin Howard OAM, Max Chester OAM, Trevor Brown AMand Jacqueline Taylor OAM. These Board Members have given so much of their time and their network to furtherthe Order of Australia Association in Victoria and in Kevin Howard’s case leaving a legacy of 14 regional groups. We are lucky to have the quality of our previous members and our new members who have kept the Associationin a good financial position in what has been a difficult time. We look forward to those present and past membersparticipating in the 2014 conference. Future functions that will be highlighted by direct mail, via the website ornewsletters will be the New Recipients function kindly hosted by Seasons Botanical Hotel in St Kilda Road and theCultural Lunch this time with the United States Consul General as our special guest. There is also a terrific theatrenight for Hot Shoe Shuffle starring David Atkins and Bobby Fox. We are looking at doing more joint ventures withour proud corporate sponsor RACV and they are very happy for our members to join in some of the activities thatthey host and give suitable acknowledgement to the Order of Australia Association members present. It’s a year of change, a year of challenges, a year where you the members are the most important ingredient of theAssociation and in particular our regional groups, which I have said time and time again are the future of the Orderof Australia Association Victorian Branch. I look forward to visiting many of you during the year and keeping youupdated with State and National issues and I am a phone call away for any matters you would like to discuss with me.David G. Mann OAM, Chairman, Victoria State BranchCommunicationsThe cost of communicating with our members represents about 70% of Victoria Branch’s normal operating expenses.Currently all communication is by snail mail. Members with email would be making a significant contribution toreducing the $10 per member annual cost of communication by electing to receive all communications electronically.Would you please indicate your willingness to assist us to become more cost-effective by sending your email addressto oaavicmbrsec@theorderofaustralia.asn.auKen Wright OAM, Chair of the Mallee Regional Group, was most impressed with the Wreath Laying ceremony heldduring the recent Annual Conference in Canberra. He writes “It was a moving experience, particularly to my wifeand I, both of us having an uncle on the Remembrance Wall, and placing a poppy beside each name. Both weresergeants and both only 21. We also experienced the sound and light of an Australian Bomber Command Lancasterapproaching the target, and the voices of the pilot and his crew. We all owe much to those courageous men.April_2013.indd 25/04/2013 5:19:15 PM

33Order of Australia Association National Conference 2013This report of the National Conference was submitted by Barbara Thompson OAM.The 27th National Annual Conference of O.A.A. in Canberra was for me a standout event for its speakers & the excellentsocial occasions & entertainment provided for those 430 attendees. Getting together over drinks at the “Meet & Greet”Thursday afternoon gave us a chance to meet other visitors before we were bussed to a reception at the magnificentnew National Arboretum located 10 minutes. drive from the city centre - the area devastated by recent bushfires. The building sits on the hillside over looking Canberra & Lake Burley Griffin. 250 hectares of rolling hills have beenplanted in groves with over 40000 trees from Australia & around the world. As it develops it will become a significantrecreational, scientific & educational hub. We were welcomed by a very glamorous & charming A.C.T. Chief MinisterMs. Katy Gallagher, heard from the Chairman of the Arboretum & entertained by the A.D.F .Federation Guard Drillsquad & also by Tania de Jong A.M. who is known to many of us through Pot Pourri. She founded Creativity & CreativeUniverse to inspire people to find their voice & to improve well being & engagement in communities & organizations. The weather was perfect again on Friday evening when we were taken by bus to a reception at Yarralumla hosted by theGovernor General. The scene on the lawn in front of the residence was perfect- marquees, tables & chairs set out onthe edge of the lake. The food & drink provided was beautifully presented. The Governor General welcomed us & she& her husband mingled with the guests. The Royal Military College Band played & Service personnel waited on us. Agreat occasion. Saturday morning we were up bright & early to leave by bus at 8am for the very moving Wreath Layingceremony at the Aust. War Memorial. General Peter Gration gave the commemorative address & at the conclusionwe were all able to lay a Poppy on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After coffee at the hotel we assembled inthe conference room for a multi faith observance. We were addressed by Rev.Prof. James Haire A.C.KSJ followed byspeakers from the Christian Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish & Muslim Communities. An interesting Q.&A. followed. Saturdaynight the conference culminated with a gathering at National Gallery of Australia. Drinks & canapés were served on thelawns outside & the Curator, Jane Kinsman welcomed us & talked of the Toulouse Lautrec exhibition. We had about1 hour to wander through the Gallery before entering the new, beautifully decorated Gandel Hall for dinner. We wereseated at tables of 10 & after welcoming speeches, the Loyal Toast & a spirited rendition of two verses of the AustralianNational Anthem & Grace we were served a delicious meal. Entertainment was provided by soprano Louise Page withaccompanist Phillipa Candy - two very talented artists. A splendid function to conclude an exceptional conference.Congratulations to the Canberra Committee.Three New Members Elected to the Victorian Branch CommitteeThe profiles of David Rayner OAM and Richard Williams OAM will be featured in the forthcoming Newsletters. In this issue is the profile of Diane James AM:- Diane James AM was recently appointedto the Association’s State Branch. We are very fortunate in Australia that, under the Australian Honours System, nominations for Order of Australia Awards come from the community itself. Thr Group urges members not to letthe opportunity pass to encourage nominations which recognise the actions and achievements of people we noticewho “go above and beyond “the call of duty on behalf of our community. Our first event for 2013 was the AnnualCruden Farm Picnic on Sunday 24th March. Cruden Farm now is preserved as a lasting Monument to Dame ElisabethMurdoch and well worth visiting if you haven’t already had the pleasure to do so.PLANNED EVENTS FOR 2013. We held our December luncheon in Port Fairy inearly December. Again the venue was the delightful restaurant overlooking the eastern beach. Our guest speaker wasour newest member to the group, David Hawker AO, who retired as Speaker of The House of Representatives atthe 2007 election. David spoke to the topic “From the Speaker’s Chair”. He gave a very informative address on theresponsibilities and at time onerous duties of the office, with his address peppered by a host of amusing, sometimeshilarious, anecdotes. All of those present enormously enjoyed the address and the function.AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATION: Again this year our group combined with the Warrnambool RSL to stageour regional “Lowering of the Flag” ceremony. A new and successful effort was made to involve the youth of thedistrict through an essay competition titled “My Australia”. We were so grateful for the substantial assistance ofthis by the local Ace Radio network through station 3YB. We were delighted to have the participation this year ofNaval personnel from HMAS Cerebus and Air Force cadets from the newly formed Warrnambool unit, although wewere disappointed that the latest Defence budget cuts forced the non-participation of the local army reserve unit. The, at times, very moving ceremony was warmly appreciated by the many people present and at its conclusion ourmembers and their guests socialised at a reception with the many other guests.Loddon/Campaspe Regional GroupThe group met at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club recently to enjoy a pleasant Luncheon. Guest speaker was MrRoger Jones OAM, a 2012 recipient, who received his Award for “services to the community through executive roleswith a range of emergency service organisations”. Roger outlined the experiences during his career, noting the everchangingrole of emergency services within modern society. The Committee has held discussions with La TrobeUniversity regarding a possible link with our group supporting prospectiveleaders who are currently undertaking courses. In conjunction with theVictoria Branch, the Region is planning for the next Annual Conference ofThe Order of Australia Association, to be held in Melbourne in February2014. The Macedon Ranges region is a possible post-Conference tourdestination for those delegates wishing to extend their visit. The Group areexcited at the prospect of showcasing this beautiful area to the north-westof Melbourne, in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. 6Central Highlands Regional GroupThe Central Highlands Region received four new Order of Australia awards in January and we hope to persuadethem to join the Association. Although the region is quite far flung it is pleasing to note that the members of theAssociation do continue to maintain contact. For example Ms Jean Wise OAM gathered the local members togetherfor lunch in Warracknabeal on Australia Day. This type of local activity is to be applauded. The Group hopes foranother large turn out for the Annual Luncheon on 26th May in Ballarat.North East Victoria & Goulburn Valley Regional GroupThis year the Group is celebrating 20 years since its establishment with plans already completed for a luncheon to beheld at the world acclaimed Epicurean Centre at Brown Bros Winery at Milawa. The venue is most fitting as this iswhere it all began in March 1993 with a picnic on the lawns at the winery where the late John Brown Snr was electedas the first Chairman of the Group. This promises to be a most exciting event as it is expected that three or fourof the original members will be in attendance. An illustrated presentation of those in attendance and the activitieson that historic day is planned. Planning for the activities for the remainder of the year are almost complete with aline-up of exciting speakers and functions which will include: ▪ The August function in Nagambie with a visit to seeBlack Caviar, ▪ A guest speaker who will explain the organising of CHOGM, ▪ The five new awardees from withinthe region this Australia Day.Mallee Regional GroupOn Australia Day, the Mildura Rural City Council again provided special tables at district Australia Day ceremonies forOrder of Australia Award recipients and introduced them to the audience during the proceedings. There were fournew recipients of Australia Day awards in the Mallee Region: Dr John Horton OAM (Birchip), Christine Knight OAM(Merbein), Leanne Morgan OAM (Mildura) and Robert Pollock OAM (Red Cliffs). The Red Cliffs Club was the venuefor the Mallee Group’s Luncheon and Annual General Meeting on Sunday 10 February 2013. The lunch was probablyone of the rare occasions where there were four former Mildura Mayors present: Ken Wright OAM JP, Shirley PennyOAM JP, Brian Grogan OAM and Peter Byrne OAM. Guest speaker at the lunch was Peter Byrne who spoke on theimportant work being undertaken by the Sunraysia Mallee Ethnic Community Council to help integrate into the Malleeregion genuine refugees who have been granted permanent residency in Australia. He stressed that the majority of thenew arrivals had a keen desire to be accepted by the local community, to work hard and to further their education. At theAGM following the lunch, the Mallee Group re-elected the Committee for a further term. Members of the Committeeare: Ken Wright OAM JP (President), Bill McGinty OAM (Vice-President), DanMacFarlane AM (Secretary/Treasurer), Brian Grogan OAM, Betty Krake OAMand Shirley Penny OAM JP. This “pre-Christmas” event featured as guest speaker Dr. Graeme SmithOAM, Managing Director of the Lort Smith Lost Dogs Home. A significant donation from the Western SuburbsGroup was made to the Lost Dogs Home for its continuing vital work. Feature guest was the retiring RegionalGroups Co-ordinator Kevin Howard OAM. The chairman, on behalf of the Western Suburbs Group, expresseddeep appreciation, particularly for Kevin’s sterling efforts in helping to revive the Group from February 2011 andhis on-going support and encouragement. The Annual Meeting was held and resulted in John Nicol OAM beingre-elected with acclamation. Vance Hilton OAM, John Ravenhall AM and Allan Eldridge OAM were “re-elected” totheir previous roles and Dr. June Kane AM was also elected to the executive committee. Reports from the chairman, secretary and treasurer were received favourably and accepted. The 42 members and guests enjoyed the event verymuch. An “executive” committee met at the Williamstown R&SL in December to review the 2012 year program andcontinue planning for 2013 and which will include an evening event in the program to enable members who cannotattend lunch time functions to be present. A luncheon was held at Parliament House in February, followed by abrief viewing of Question time in the Legislative Assembly and the opportunity for a “Cook’s tour” of the building. The event was “hosted” by the Speaker, Ken Smith through the good graces of Chairman John Nicol.
