Mr, Naplin had to bereplaced when he left to join the Navy andAlvin Nordvold took his place as advisor. Whenthe class was in their junior year, they planned aprom with the theme “The Deep Blue Sea” creatingthe atmosphere for a long-rememberedevening. The class motto became “Forwardever; backward never.” With Edward Nelson asclass president, the class of 1946 won the annualsong contest and when they graduated theyknew it was just the beginning of each of theirlives’ and that each of them still had much toaccomplish.Frances Klein, nicknamed Fran, fromWarroad, Minnesota was one of the members ofthe class of 1946. She was an attendant to homecomingqueen, Geneva Iverson, along withColleen Skeie, Ellen Johnson, Iris Sinclair, andLillian Qualley. Frances enjoyed her years at theNWSA, she was member of the “Agony Sisters”with Ellen Johnson of Lancaster and placed secondin the annual all-student variety night inJanuary of 1946. She played “Hyacinth” in thesenior class play, “Brother Goose.” She was onthe class honor roll a number of times andinvolved in choir, basketball, and volleyball. Sheloved attending the NWSA.After her graduation, she went toMinneapolis, and in 1951, she enlisted in theU.S. Marine Corps. She received her basic trainingat Parris Island, South Carolina and waslater assigned as a receptionist to the UnderSecretary of the Navy at the Pentagon. One of Frances’ fondest memories was whenshe represented the U.S. Marine Corp in a“First Day of Issue” ceremony for a three-centstamp honoring women in the Armed Services.President Harry S. Truman presided over thisevent. The photograph of Frances representingthe U.S. Marine Corps was taken with PresidentRay K. Eventually, the photograph willbe hung in the Heritage Room in the KiehleBuilding. In 1997, the class of 1946, paid tribute to theirclassmate by creating a scholarship fund in herRob Proulx, recipient of the Klein-Fortie Scholarship, holds thephotograph of Frances Klein in 1952 with President Truman.8

name to help students atthe University ofMinnesota, Crookston(UMC) to pay for theireducation. In 1998, theFrances Klein-FortieScholarship was created, and it has helped studentsat UMC ever since. This year’s recipient isRob Proulx from RedLake Falls, Minnesota. His grandfather, EarlProulx of Argyle,Minnesota, attended theNorthwest School andwas a junior in 1946 the same year Franceswas a senior.Earl was an outstanding athlete andfootball co-captain in 1947. He also servedas president of the “A” Club. TheNorthwest Monthly reported another of hissuccesses: “At the Awards Assembly heldon January 9, trophies for outstandingaccomplishment in student summer homeproject work in 1947 by students at theNorthwest School of Agriculture were wonby Phyllis Anderson of Caledonia, NorthDakota, and Earl Proulx of Red Lake Falls.Phyllis Anderson ranked first in five HomeEconomics home projects and Earl Proulxfinished seven home projects with highgrades in each.” Earl enjoyed theNorthwest School and holds the school inhigh regard. His grandson, Rob is no stranger to successeither. A senior majoring in plantindustries management, Rob, placed secondin the National Collegiate CropsContests in Kansas City on November 15,2005 and again in Chicago on November19. He has been named to theChancellor’s 4.0 Club more than once. The first year after Rob transferred, hewas a tutor in the Academic AssistanceCenter, and he is currently a member ofthe Agronomy Club. Rob will graduate inthe spring 2006 and is considering attendinggraduate school in agronomy or arelated field when he is finished.Rob appreciated the help scholarshipsprovided. “In the ag area,” Rob explains,“there are so many scholarships and alumnihave given so much to UMC students. The student scholarship application isfilled with support from the NorthwestSchool. UMC has changed over the years, but the legacy is still here. We appreciatethe help we receive from the alumni.”Rob started attending college atConcordia in Moorhead as a businessmajor, but when he decided to changemajors and schools, he looked immediatelyat UMC. “It is a school with a great reputationin agriculture,” Rob stated. Thatreputation influenced Rob’s decision toattend UMC. Four out of the five Proulxchildren attended UMC so Rob not onlyhad the influence of his grandfather, buthe also had the influence of siblings whohad attended. His younger brother, Eric, isa freshman this year so Rob is not the lastof the Proulx’s to choose UMC.There is something about the legacy thatlives through scholarships that reaches outto students over many miles and over theyears. If you are interested in supportingstudents at UMC through scholarship giving, please contact the Office ofDevelopment & Alumni Relations at 218-281-8439 or 800-862-6466 ext. 8439.Scholarships help students like Rob reachtheir goals, you can be a part of helpingUMC students by your gift to the HeritageFund Drive or establishing a scholarshipof your own. Still for the Birds, After All These Years!Earlier this winter, UMCChancellor Charles H. Casey,Interim Vice Chancellor forStudent Affairs Pam Holsinger-Fuchs,and natural resources students gavethe “feathered folks” at UMC a boostby filling the “Nature Nook” birdfeeder. Interestingly enough, it is thesame bird feeder that was inauguratedin 1974. It was originally built byBill McWaters, campus carpenter, and painted by the ConservationClub but has gone through a coupleof face lifts and repairs since then. The Provost at that time was StanleySahlstrom, shown filling the feeder in1974. In the original article in theFebruary 14, 1974 issue of the UMCCommentator, Sahlstrom noted, “Ouravian friends are a very important part ofthe total environment and this is dedicatedin the hope that all of us will develop abetter appreciation of the total environmentin which we live.” Two of the studentspresent at the initial dedication havecertainly gone on to appreciate andimprove the environment. MikeKovacovich is the current manager ofItasca State Park, the crown jewel ofMinnesota’s state parks. David Thom, isnow the Resources and Planning StaffOfficer of the Black Hills National Forestin South Dakota.Originally the bird feeder was in thesunken garden in front of what is now theSahlstrom Conference Center but is nowlocated in the Nature Nook wildlife developmentarea between Owen and HillHalls. Nature Nook is a joint project ofUMC’s Student Chapter of The WildlifeSociety, advised by John Loegering, andthe Natural Resources Club (formerlyConservation Club) advised by Phil Baird.Club members secured $2,000 in grantfunds from the Minnesota Chapter of TheWildlife Society and the Rocky MountainElk Foundation to develop Nature Nook. When completed it will host a micro-cosmof Minnesota’s 3 biomes – DeciduousForest, Coniferous Forest, and TallgrassPrairie. So far a number of trees andshrubs have been moved in with a treespade to complement a butterfly garden, raingarden, and wildlife tree. Bringing Back the MemoOn February 4, 2006 at 2:00 P.M., Lysaker gymnasiumwas host to the first Golden EagleWomen’s Basketball alumni game. Manyfamiliar faces filled the court players like: Amy Kuznia(2004), Bev McNamee (2002), Brenda Johnson(1986), and Jody Oien (1979) just to name a few. Thegame brought back many laughs for the alums andsome “old school” moves that haven’t been seen inawhile. It was a hard fought game and at the end, the“Black team” came out victorious. What was your favoritepart of UMC basketball?Later that evening many of the alumni came to supportthe Women’s Basketball team play againstBemidji State. It turned out to be a close gamethroughout with the Beaver’s coming out with a victory. There was a social with lots of great food for all thecurrent and former Women’s basketball players afterthe game. At halftime of the Men’s Basketball game, all the alumni who made it to the events for the daywere introduced. Turned out that thirty-one alumnicame to this event! It was a much better turnout thanexpected, and we can only hope that number willgrow as the years go on! ✦“Defensive privilege drillsin practice! Golden Eagles Conclude WinterSports Seasons; Prepare for PlayoffsWith the turning of the calendarcomes the conclusion of anotherseason of winter sports at theUniversity of Minnesota, Crookston. Thisseason would also bring an end to threeoutstanding careers. Patrick Knutson (Sr.,East Grand Forks, MN), Lee Roberts (Sr.,Cushing, MN), and Karna Plaine (Sr.,Hatton, ND) have each been leaders ontheir team since the moment they walkedon campus four years ago. Each hasamassed many honors and accolades intheir time as a Golden Eagle, and eachwill be missed after their time here isthrough.Women’s Basketball - Following a seasonthat saw the Golden Eagle Women’sBasketball team finish with the most winsin school history, the future looked brightand a quality core of returners was back tolead the way. However, the departure ofthree of last season’s starters to graduationleft some holes to fill. The young playersfrom last season would be asked to step inand fill those rolls. With the new seasonbrought a new head coach and the optimismthat comes along with it. SheilaRoux would return to her alma mater tocommand the team she once played for.Roux would bring with her a wealth ofknowledge and a history of success, beingan assistant to two different playoff boundprograms. Now in her final season Plaine was sureto be a highlight night in and night out,and she would not disappoint. Plainewould start the season shooting hot, tyingthe Pepsi Tip-Off Tournament (Mankato,MN) record by scoring 56 points in twogames. She would score 25 points in thefirst game and follow up by scoring 31 thenext night. For that effort she would alsoearn the first NSIC Player-of-the-Weekaward of the season. Plaine would lead theNSIC in scoring all season, while followingclose behind the entire way would beteammate, Kari Score (Jr., Boyceville, WI).The two would continue to outpace theconference for the entire season, scoringnearly 20 points per game each. Throughthe season’s first 11 weeks, the tandemwould hold six NSIC Player-of-the-WeekKari Score earned her 1,000th point in her Golden Eaglecareer with a three-pointer against Concordia St. Paul.awards, with each having three.“Karna Plaine has proven night in andnight out that she is a dominant DivisionII basketball player. She has led the conferencein scoring the entire season whileplaying on a bad foot,” says HeadWomen’s Basketball Coach Sheila Roux.“Karna is one of those kids that you feelprivileged to coach and know what greatthings she is going to do in her life.”Coach Roux adds, “Kari Score has consistentlygotten better and better this season. She plays with a lot of confidence andshe’s really done a great job reboundingthis season for us. She will be lookedupon next season to be a big leader forthe Golden Eagles.”In the first exhibition of the season,Beth Jacobson (Jr., Mayville, ND) wouldtear her ACL and be lost for the season.Jacobson was expected to play a majorrole on the team this season and withouther, the Golden Eagles were left a playershort and trying to fill the void. Hardee’s Classic for Coach Roux’sfirst career win. Also following thetournament Plaine and Carly Score(Jr., Boyceville, WI) would garnerAll-Tournament honors for theirdominant play. Plaine and the twinScore sisters would be the trio thatled the Golden Eagles all seasonwith each ranking among the topscorers in the conference. As theconference season opened up, theGolden Eagles would start 1-0 gettinga win over the host Warriors ofWinona State. The following nightin St. Paul against ConcordiaUniversity Kari Score would net the 1,000thpoint of her Golden Eagle career with a threepointer for the Golden Eagles’ first points ofthe game. As the season rolled on, the emergenceof Theresa Crance (So., Timber Lake,SD) and Joan Ebnet (Sr., Pequot Lakes, MN) asconsistent scorers became a key to the successof the team.Men’s Basketball - The Golden Eagle Menstarted the season looking to make an impact inthe NSIC during Coach Oseth’s third full season.Lee Roberts (Sr., Cushing, MN) and PatPosl (Sr., Bird Island) were back for their seniorcampaigns and ready to lead the Golden Eagles. The top four scorers were gone from a year ago,but the core of the team remained, and theblend of new recruits had the team excited forwhat lie ahead. Roberts and the men createdsome excitement that had not been seen inLysaker Gymnasium for some time. OnNovember 29 Minot State University came toCrookston with the Golden Eagles looking fortheir first win. After a close first half the visitingBeavers held the one point advantage at 37-36.A back and forth second half saw the guestsahead in the final minutes of the game. GarryThompson (So., Elk River, MN) would hit a pairof free throws late to bring UMC to within two.Following a pair of missed shots by each teamand an offensive rebound by the Golden Eagles,Roberts was left open in the corner. With thecrowd on their feet, Roberts would nail a threepointer to put UMC up by one with three secondsleft. He would also be fouled on the shotand hit the free throw to complete the fourpoint play and put the Golden Eagles up twoPatrick Knutson scored his 100th career point.and leave Minot State with nothing but a desperationshot as time expired. The Beaverswould have no such luck and the Golden Eagleswould get the first win of the young season.Following such a dramatic game, UMC mayhave been prime for a let down as rivalMinnesota, Morris came to town just two nightslater. The Golden Eagles followed their first winwith an impressive victory over the Cougars, thistime with less dramatics. Following the wincame a stretch of games against tough NCCteams such as Minnesota State, Mankato, St.Cloud State, Augustana College, and theUniversity of South Dakota to close out the nonconferenceseason. With the opening of theconference season, came the first conferencewin as the Golden Eagles beat Red River Valleyrival Minnesota State University, Moorhead 72-58. The game would see Thompson net a double-doubleas he finished with 23 points and 10rebounds to lead UMC to the win.“We have a very young team with only two seniors. This group has worked extremely hardand the future of Golden Eagle basketball looksbright,” states Head Men’s Basketball Coach JeffOseth. “We may have come up a little short onthe scoreboard at times, but the respect ouropponents have for these young men and theprogram is very rewarding. This has been ablue collar type of team and it has been veryfun to coach.”The trio of Roberts, Posl, and Thompsoncould always be looked to when the GoldenEagles needed them. Mario Bonner (Jr.,Milledgeville, GA), Jordan Grafsgaard (So.,Ulen, MN) and Antwon Miller (So., MorenoValley, CA) would be pleasant surprises as they22

It is acombination that will result in a competitivesquad in the NSIC for the 2006 baseball campaign.“We have great leadership returning to ourteam with players like Brandon Wolf (P/SS,Sauk Centre, MN) and Aaron Motl (C, Staples,MN). Both Motl and Wolf were NSIC All-Conference Honorable Mention players lastspring and have improved their play throughoutthe off season,” says Head Baseball CoachSteve Olson.Joe Nelson (3B, West Fargo, ND), Matt Morin(OF, East Grand Forks, MN), Kyle Nyquist (2B,Cokato, MN) and Zach Schneider (P/IF,Sheboygan, WI) are returning players that havestarted at their respective positions for theGolden Eagles.Key newcomers include Cameron Routon(IF/P, Moose Lake, MN), Adam Knebel (IF/P,Warroad, MN), Adam Johnson (IF/P, Motley,MN), Laudyn Nelson (IF, Middle River, MN),Stephen Funk (OF, Sebeka, MN), Pablo Garcia(OF, Crookston, MN), Josh Bullivant (OF,Dassel, MN), Johnny Johnson (OF, Macon, GA)and Erick Martin (OF, Grasston, MN). Softball - The Golden Eagle Women’sSoftball team is looking forward to thechallenge of the upcoming season. Theteam opens the 2006 season with a SpringBreak trip to Pittsburg, Kansas to play inthe Gorilla Invitational. UMC will playeight games in four days in Pittsburgbefore returning home to play at MayvilleState on March 23. The first home gamefor the Golden Eagles is March 28 as theteam hosts the University of Minnesota,Morris. Inexperience will be the majorobstacle this season as those four playerswill be the only on the team to haveDivision II softball experience. The teamwill look to two college transfers and sixtrue freshmen to carry the rest of the loadfor the team. The hectic March schedulewill help solidify the line-up and gel theteam as a whole. Although young, theGolden Eagles look to be competitive withthe help of the newcomers. They are lookingforward to gaining experience andbecoming more competitive throughoutthe season. Pitching for the Golden Eagleswill be the freshmen duo of CourtneyNohre (Bemidji, MN) and BritneyWinkelman (Foley, MN). Both pitchershave good control and deceptive off speedpitches that will keep the opposition offbalance. Returning to call the gamesbehind the plate this season will be seniorChris Carlson (Hines, MN). Chris was aleader both offensively and defensively lastseason and is expected to make an impactthis season. Sharing time will be ItascaCommunity College transfer StaceyVillebro (Hill City, MN). Stacey has greatspeed and will be utilized any way she can;catching, in the outfield, or as a designatedplayer. The infielder positions have gonethrough almost a complete overhaul froma year ago. The only returner will be LisaErickson (Wadena, MN) at third base. Lisawill be looked upon to use her NSIC experienceto “quarterback” the infield. Theshortstop position will see a familiar face asCrookston native Shawna Steinbrink(Crookston, MN) who transferred to UMClast fall will take a majority of the reps.Tracy Nyhus (Almena, WI) will be theGolden Eagle second baseman for a majorityof the games this season. She will sharetime with Lorelei McGee (Moose Lake,MN) who will take most of her reps in theoutfield. First base will see a trio sharingtime throughout most of the season.Courtney Nohre and Britney Winkelmanwill share time when they aren’t pitchingwith newcomer Cassie Yates (Buffalo, MN)who joined the team following the completionof the Golden Eagle Volleyball season.Yates has outstanding speed and will alsobe looked upon as a utility player to pinchrun, play outfield, first base and be a designatedplayer when needed. The outfieldwill boast the most experience with thereturn of Kacee Biederman (Milaca, MN)in left field and Kristen Beyak (Calgary,Alberta) in centerfield. Playing a majorityof her time in the outfield will beMarybeth Eckstrom (Hines, MN), who willalso be looked upon as a courtesy andpinch runner.“The inexperience of the team will bethe biggest concern for me this season. However, our overall athletic ability hascarried us well past where we were last seasonat this time,” says Head Women’sSoftball Coach Mitch Bakken. “Ourdefense was solid again this fall so ourfocus will be putting runs on the board totake the pressure off of our pitchers. Theteam has been in the weight room andbatting cage religiously and I am alreadyseeing results. The team’s hard work anddedication will result in a more offensiveteam that will be a true competitor in theNSIC,” coach Bakken adds.Women’s Tennis - After a six year hiatus,UMC has reinstated their Women’s TennisProgram. Seven new players have joinedthe inaugural team this fall. The Golden Eagle squad consists ofsome local as well as regional talent. Sylvester (Crookston, MN) and ChristieChappell (Ottawa, Canada) are the two seniorson the team.Tara, a standout from Crookston High School, which has an outstanding reputation in thestate for their tennis program, will lead theteam this spring. “Her skill and knowledge ofthe game will definitely help this program havea successful season,” says first year coach AbbyHearn. Christie, a four-year soccer player forUMC, who is also been recognized as the mostsuccessful soccer player in UMC history, joinsthe team as the team’s only dual-sport athlete.“Her quickness and athleticism will be critical toher singles and doubles matches. She is a truecompetitor,” notes Coach Hearn. Both Tara andChristie will be looked upon to provide leadershipfor this young squad.Other players rounding out the team include;juniors Susan Turner (Echo, MN), Jackie Baird(Langdon, ND), and Holly Robinson (Roseau,MN); sophomore Vanessa Houle (Ashland, WI);and Freshman Lindsey Johnson (Crookston,MN). Computers and Agriculture Make aPerfect TeamIn the spring of 2003, Jay Hogfoss hadjust graduated with a degree in ag systemsmanagement (ASM) with anemphasis in precision agriculture and aminor in information technology management(ITM). He was able to adapt hiscomputer classes to agriculture and hiseducation led him to his first position atTitan Machinery, one of the largest CaseIH dealership networks in the U.S. andfrom there to Trimble Navigations.Working for Trimble has Jay based outof the main Case New Holland plant inRacine, Wisconsin, where he provides supportfor all the auto guidance systems. Jayloves working with the Case New Hollandauto guidance systems and seeing all thenew technology about a year in advance. That fact makes Jay’s work interesting andexciting for him. “The job is uniquebecause I get to work with the new productsfrom two different companies,Trimble Navigation and Case NewHolland,” says Hogfoss. He also does theirprep work for farm shows, magazinephoto shoots, and training programs. He feels that his education at theUniversity of Minnesota, Crookston(UMC) helped him get where he is now.He liked UMC’s close student/faculty relationships. The size of UMC continues tobe an advantage for its graduates.Professors Paul Aakre and Bruce Brorsonwere two of Jay’s favorite professors. Theyhelped to advise Jay of which classes wouldhelp him reach his goals. Thanks toUMC’s small class sizes, these professorshad time to work with him after class andin the field. It gave him an edge in the jobmarket.Aakre was Jay’s advisor in theAgricultural Systems Management program.“Jay was introduced to me after hisfirst year as an ITM major at UMC. Heliked to work with computers, but he reallywanted to be involved in agriculturalapplications where he could use his computerskills.”Jay Hogfoss ’03 works today for Trimble Navigations, based out of the mainCase New Holland plant in Racine,Wisconsin. The ASM program with an emphasis inprecision agriculture seemed to peak Jay’sinterest. “With this degree,” Aakreexplains, “Jay could apply his computerskills and still be actively involved in helpingothers with their production agriculturechallenges. The ASM program hasnearly 30 credits of electives that studentscan use to tailor their education to fit individualgoals. This allowed Jay to add aminor in ITM.”The guidance positioning system experiencethat Jay had at UMC made a differenceto his future employers. They likedthat he already had some experience onwhich to build. A few of the classes towhich Jay owes some of his success areApplication in Precision Agriculture,Microcomputer System Architecture,Computer-Aided Drafting, andTopographical Mapping and SpatialAnalyses. The courses offered with thehands-on approach to learning found atUMC were just what he needed.Outside of class, Jay was a member ofthe Ag Industries Club, the highly successfulNorth American Colleges and Teachersof Agriculture (NACTA) team, and Delta“With this degree,Jay could apply hiscomputer skillsand still beactively involvedin helping otherswith theirproductionagriculturechallenges.”— ProfessorPaul Aakre27

Jay Hogfoss is a graduate of theag systems management programwith a minor in informationtechnology management.Theta Sigma (DTS).Of his membership inUMC’s agriculturalfraternity, Jay says,“The great part of theDTS fraternity is allthe good times that Ihad at the houseand all of thegood friendsthat I met beingone of the fraternitybrothers. I am proudto say that I am partof the DTS fraternity, and I am still to thisday meeting otherpeople and friends that were in other chaptersof our fraternity.”Jay has always kept in contact with his advisorsand teachers at UMC; he felt very comfortableabout dropping by just to chat and or ask questions. This good habit has also carried to hisworking career. Two years after graduation, Jaystill calls up advisors Paul Aakre and GaryWagner (precision ag consultant, instructor,If you would like to know more about ITM orthe ASM degrees at UMC, please visithttp://academics.UMCrookston.eduand local farmer) to let them know what he isup to.
