To ensure that your own obituary leaves as many clues aspossible for future researchers, consider writing your own obituary. Besure to keep it up to date. Here are some facts that you might consider including:1. Your full name, including maiden name and nicknames.2. Date and place of birth.3. Full names of parents, including mother’s maiden name.4. A summary of where you have lived, including dates of major moves.5. A summary of the occupations you have worked.6. Full names of siblings and place of residence; mention deceasedsiblings.7. Full names of children and places of residence.8. Place of burial if different from place of death or regular place ofresidence.9. Interests and major activities in your lifetime.Set aside funds for the publishing of this obituary. Make sure you haveinformed your family of your wishes and where to find the obituary youhave written. The following obituary is a great one to have, but after the first twosentences there is no other pertinent information to help the researcher.OBITUARYSamuel G. B. Smith died at his home in Lee Center, April 2, 1896,aged 80 years and 8 months.11

He came to this place with his family in ‘57. Then, at our publicgatherings, heads silvered by time were rarely seen, and Mr. Smith wasalso still in his prime, indeed it seems a very recent thing that people havebegun to remark–“Do you notice that Uncle Sammy Smith is failing?” Theabundant brown locks had indeed thinned and whitened to silvery gleam, the ears failed to catch light tones in greeting, and finally the eyes grewdim, but still he clung to his accustomed duties which could not have beenperformed, had not the loved daughter in assisting him adding to herseemingly already complete record of faithfulness. He loved the house of God, and took great pleasure in caring for thetemple dedicated to His worship, and in services held therein, was anearnest participant. As a little community, we have so long been accustomed to that sameform–that step–that voice, and when the tones of that church bell came toour ears, we had the vision of a silvery head bowing and rising with eachstroke.T h e s epictures wereso engravedu p o nm e m o r y ’ stablets thatthey seemedto become ap a r t o fourselves anda t t h e“ b r e a k i n ghome ties”we all feel al o s s , ourhearts areready to cryo u t i n12protest, butno, we haveb e e npermittingourselves to

e so engrossed by symbols, that we have forgotten the real. All that wasin the image of God, has gone to serve in that glorious temple not madewith hands, eternal in the heavens. There his ears are attuned to perfectharmonies, his eyes feast on beauties but fairly typified by the exquisiteflowers which covered his casket, and we feel sure he would say “tiswell,” R.L.S.CALAVERAS COUNTYINDEX TO DEATHRECORDSPREFACETens of thousands of people came to Calaveras County during theGold Rush. Many of them died on the way or died in the early years ofStatehood. Often they were buried next to their cabins or where they fell, sometimes with no one to record their names. Many of their descendants are now searching for information on theirlost ancestors so the Calaveras Genealogical Society decided to form acommittee to accumulate as many death records as possible on thecitizens of the county who have passed on.The Calaveras Genealogical Society cannot guarantee the accuracy ofthe information in this data base since names were gathered from varioussources that cannot be verified, however it is a great source ofinformation and will be an invaluable help to those who cannot search theoriginal records personally. The data base was originally the work of Herb Good with his tasktaken over by Maureen Elliott in 2005 under the direction of the CalaverasGenealogical Society. Maureen Elliott will be continually adding newnames and information to it as records are discovered. The original sourceof information was reviewed as much as possible to verify accuracy but inmany cases only names and dates on tombstones were available or articleswritten by others in earlier years. The Calaveras Genealogical Society hopes this publication will behelpful to those who are searching for their missing ancestors.13
