Modular designThe R&S®NH/NV8600 broadcast transmitters essentiallyconsist of the following components:❙❙R&S®Sx800 exciter❙❙R&S®NetCCU®800 transmitter control unit❙❙R&S®VH8600A1 UHF amplifier❙❙Rack with control unit and power distribution❙❙R&S®ZK800Sx pump rack and control unit❙❙R&S®KL862 heat exchangerThe core components of the R&S®xx8000 generation havebeen tried and tested in the field for many years. Apartfrom their successful use in analog networks, they havedemonstrated their reliability on a daily basis in digital andmobile transmitter networks throughout the world. The R&S®Sx800 exciter includes the complete digital signalprocessing functionality for analog video/audio inputsignals and digital transport streams and ensures precisemodulation to the desired output channel. The circuits andalgorithms used are 100 % produced by Rohde & Schwarzto ensure maximum quality and flexibility on a long-termbasis. The exciter, which is 19" in width and only one unitin height, is extremely compact. The R&S®Sx800-K5 automaticadaptive precorrection option compensates forlinear and nonlinear distortions in the amplifier and theoutput filter, which allows simple and fast installation andcommissioning in digital transmitter networks.Configurable for different AC supply voltagesThe AC supply for the R&S®NH/NV8600 transmitters canbe configured for the different AC supply types usedworldwide:❙❙Three-phase 400 V (3w + N + PE, standard)❙❙Three-phase 208 V (3w + N + PE)❙❙Two-phase 120/240 V (2w + N + PE)As a result, additional investments (e.g. for transformers)are unnecessary, and the required installation space isreduced.Overvoltage protection connected before the power distributioneffectively protects all connection variants againstdamage caused by fast transients. If the overvoltage protectionis triggered, a warning is issued by the transmittercontrol unit and, if necessary, also sent to remote units. The R&S®NetCCU®800 transmitter control unit with itsLinux-based operating system ensures reliable controland state-of-the-art operation. The transmitters can beaccessed locally and remotely via the graphical colordisplay, web interface, SNMP or a parallel interface. The modular design and the fact that most of the componentsare used throughout the R&S®xx8000 transmitterfamily provide a high degree of synergy, which simplifiesinstallation, maintenance and spare parts supply. The uniformoperating and maintenance philosophy minimizes thetraining required for the operating personnel.Rohde & Schwarz R&S®NH/NV8600 UHF Transmitter Family for TV 5

Energy-efficientwith small footprintUHF broadcast transmitters with excellentefficiencyA series of innovative solutions implemented across theentire transmitter system gives the R&S®NH/NV8600 transmitterfamily an excellent level of energy efficiency of upto 23 % for OFDM signals and > 25 % for ATSC signals. This is primarily due to the optimized design of theR&S®VH8600A1 UHF power amplifier with optimum adaptationand cooling of the developed amplifier circuits andof the integrated power supply unit. The extremely small number of heat transfer points inthe amplifier modules ensures low thermal resistanceand allows optimum heat dissipation. This is achievedby mounting all boards and components directly on theliquid-cooled aluminum heat sink of the amplifier.Rohde & Schwarz is the only manufacturer of high-powerbroadcast amplifiers that does not use straight, drilledcoolant routing in the UHF amplifiers, but instead implementscomplex methods for flexibly distributing thecoolant in the heat sink. As a result, all hot spots of theRF circuit and of the power supply unit can be reacheddirectly and precisely.Block diagram of the cooling systemCoolingliquid circuitSerial busCAN busR&S®NH/NV8600TV transmitterPump unitcontrolR&S®ZK800Sxpump unitR&S®KL862heat exchanger6

Despite the high gain required to achieve maximumefficiency, all power components (especially the powertransistors) can be operated at a low temperature level. This is the most important criterion for stable and longtermoperation of the transistors. Moreover, the special cooling technology does notrequire air circulation inside the amplifier. The use of theR&S®VH8600A1 amplifiers therefore eliminates the needfor expensive maintenance trips to replace the integratedfans. In order to retain the amplifiers' high level of efficiencyacross the entire system, Rohde & Schwarz uses minimumattenuation in the transmitter's output network. Short signalpaths due to direct plug-in connectors and adequatelydimensioned cross sections are essential in this context.Owing to the in-house development and production of allcomponents used (e.g. power couplers, absorbers andharmonics filters), each module is optimally designed tomaximize the transmitter's overall efficiency.Compact design for low infrastructure costsWith max. 6.4 kW COFDM TV power per rack and a spacerequirement of 19" in width and just 1100 mm in rackdepth, the transmitters of the R&S®NH/NV8600 familyare extremely compact and consequently reduce infrastructurecosts.In-house development and production also play a crucialrole in transmitter compactness. They allow an optimumform factor and the ideal positioning of each systemcomponent to be taken into account during the designprocess. The R&S®NH/NV8600 transmitter family therefore has themost compact liquid-cooling system on the market. Theability to install two pump racks directly on top of eachother and select the heat exchangers to meet on-siterequirements makes it possible to install the transmitterseven when space is at a premium.Liquid cooling is also used for the R&S®NH/NV8600 transmitters'RF output network. No additional rack fan isrequired, which has a positive effect on the efficiency ofthe cooling system.Constant efficiency even at reduced outputpowersNew, digital broadcast networks are often planned withreduced transmitter power in order to compensate for anyunexpected coverage gaps with additional power, or ifoperation at maximum transmit power is not yet possiblewhen the transmitter is switched on.Normally, reducing the nominal output power of a broadcasttransmitter adversely affects efficiency. This is because,at reduced power, the transistors leave their optimumoperating point. To provide network operators withoptimum efficiency even in such cases, the operatingpoint of the transistors in the R&S®NH/NV8600 transmitterscan be adapted using a new type of supply control. Asa result, the excellent energy efficiency of the transmittercan be achieved even at reduced output powers.Rohde & Schwarz R&S®NH/NV8600 UHF Transmitter Family for TV 7

Always on the airAll components from a single source for highestquality standardsApart from obvious criteria such as the use of advancedalgorithms for signal processing, multistandard capabilityor energy efficiency, a broadcast transmitter is characterizedby one other essential feature: interruption-freetransmission.That is why engineers at Rohde & Schwarz attach greatimportance to reliability during development and designand to the dependability of the components and materialsused. True to the motto "reliability through quality",the Broadcasting Division works hand in hand with thein-house departments responsible for component selection, certification and quality assurance. The wide spectrum of test and measurement solutionsprovided by Rohde & Schwarz ensures the availability ofthe latest standards to meet highest quality requirements.Rohde & Schwarz manufactures its products in-house andsubjects them to acceptance tests at its own plants. Thisensures rapid and reliable production that is largely independentof external suppliers. As a company with an internationalpresence, Rohde & Schwarz provides local supportand the necessary know-how to customers all over theworld.Convenient operation of the R&S®NH/NV8600 transmitter family via web browser.8

Reliable system designThe R&S®NH/NV8600 transmitter family includes a varietyof features to safeguard transmitter operation. Apart frominterruption-free input signal switchover of the four ASIinputs and overvoltage protection at the AC supply input, the system design itself as well as the independenceof the individual components significantly contribute tostable operation. The main transmitter control settings are stored in theLinux-based R&S®NetCCU®800 transmitter control unit andin the rack control system, providing redundancy for thisessential function. This allows the transmitter control unitto be replaced without taking the transmitter off air.The R&S®VH8600A1 power amplifiers have their owninternal predriver stage to supply the amplifiers with thedirect signal from the exciter. As a result, dedicated preamplifiersthat represent "single points of failure" along thesignal path can be avoided. The amplifiers are additionally equipped with protectivecircuits that prevent damage to the transistors caused byovertemperature or excess reflection, for example. Therobust design of the amplifiers permits operation even inthe case of unfavorable matching of the transmitter outputup to a VSWR value of 1.3.Dependable and low-energy liquid coolingThe liquid-cooling system ensures dependable cooling ofall high-power components in the transmitters. Due to itsreliable and innovative design, the cooling system complementsthe transmitters perfectly in terms of stability andefficiency.During regular operation, the electronically commutatedheat exchanger fans are operated at up to 60 % of theirnominal speed, depending on the cooling power currentlyrequired. In addition to minimizing power consumptionand noise generation, this primarily reduces wear of thefans and increases their lifetime. There is yet another important reason for deliberately overdimensioningthe heat exchangers: If one of the two fansfails, the other fan can continue to adequately cool thetransmitter system by being operated at full power. The cooling system is decisive for the overall energybalance and the reliability of the transmitter system.Standby systems for all requirementsTo safeguard availability, the R&S®NH/NV8600 transmitterfamily can also be configured for different standbysystems. Apart from exciter standby, passive transmitterstandby and active output-stage standby, (N+1) standbysystems are predominantly installed in digital networks.Up to eight main transmitters can be backed up by onecommon standby transmitter. The necessary settings ofthe main transmitter are stored in the standby transmitter. They are selected and activated by a higher-level controlunit in the event of a fault so that the main transmitterthat is affected is immediately substituted by the standbytransmitter.A closed cooling circuit, the use of an application-optimizedcoolant and the careful selection of the coolingmaterials provide the system with long-term protectionagainst corrosion. The cooling system has also been largelydeveloped and designed in-house by Rohde & Schwarz. In the R&S®ZK800Sx pump rack, two high-quality pumpsoperating in series permanently run in active standbymode. Communications with the central R&S®NetCCU®800transmitter control unit takes place via the integratedpump controller. The quantity of coolant to be supplied isadapted individually, depending on the transmitter configuration. This ensures optimum operation and minimumconsumption. For maintenance purposes, the pumps canbe disconnected and replaced individually without impairingtransmitter operation.Rohde & Schwarz R&S®NH/NV8600 UHF Transmitter Family for TV 9
