YADIRAJAMIE“I want to be the first person inmy family to reach the accomplishmentand blessing of higher education andbreak the cycle that has been my family’sdestiny,” says Yadira. Without education,she says, her family has “struggled its wayto success.”Yadira is grateful for the opportunity to obtain her dreamof a better life. It’s through financial assistance like the K.W.Grader Nursing Scholarship that she says “this monumentaldream will be attainable for me.”After she completes her nursing degree, Yadira says shewants to “make a difference in the lives of many people in theworld.”After graduation when Jamie starts making “real money,”he wants to follow the example of the generous donors whoestablished the Edward D. Shaffer Memorial EndowedScholarship.“I appreciate your sacrifice for Christian education,”Jamie says. “I understand sacrifice.”His parents were always committed to givingJamie a Christian education, and his family livedfrugally to ensure it. When his father was diagnosedwith carcinoma in 2005 and died a year later, financialanxiety compounded his family’s devastating loss. Now Jamieexpresses gratefulness for the giving spirit of supporters of<strong>Southern</strong> students.“This came at a good time,” he says.As a financial administration major, Jamie says hisconviction is that “business should not be for personal desiresand self-satisfaction but for our Savior Jesus Christ and tofurther His wonderful gospel.”YadiraNursingJamieAccounting4 l PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT 2007-2008ENDOWMENT l 5
