BRIDGE TO THE FUTUREA Message from the PresidentJust before fall semester, I received an email from a student who was reaching out forhelp to somehow come to Southern. She had attended one semester and wanted to comeback but felt that finances presented a formidable obstacle for her. She was getting no helpfrom her parents.I decided to call the student and at least offer an encouraging word. My assumption wasthat she and her student finance counselor had explored all the available options. Sometimesstaying out of school and working to earn money before returning is the only option left.“But,” she said, “I already have my plane ticket.” She felt she must come, not becauseshe could afford to, not because she received a super scholarship, but because she just couldn’tstay away. She had tasted Southern and it was good. I sensed that she felt truly at home here.There are students for whom Southern is home. This is where they feel their lives willstart to count for something. This is where they find peace and purpose. We can reason thatit makes no financial sense, but it is not just about financial sense. It’s about Southern as abridge from the past to a positive, hopeful future.In the next few pages you will read about other students who, thanks toscholarships, have been able to make themselves at home at Southern. The need forstudent aid is critical. Thank you for stepping forward and helping to bridge thegap. We may not know, this side of heaven, the size of the impact you made in astudent’s life when you decided to give.Thank you.In Christ,Gordon BietzSCHOLARSHIPS MAKE A DIFFERENCERUTHIEAttending the Medical Missionary Conventionheld last year at Southern Adventist Universitybrought a fresh desire to Ruthie’s heart to be amissionary doctor. She’s a junior biology major withplans to become a pediatrician.During her freshman year, Ruthieattended a state college because she didn’tthink she could afford Southern. By secondsemester, however, she felt impressed to switch.“At first I was very scared because I had noclue where the finances would come from,” shesays, “but God assured me that He would supplyall my needs according to His glorious riches. Ilive by that promise every day.”Ruthie received the E.O. Grundset-Bainum Scholarship and is grateful for thegenerosity of the contributors whohave, as she says, “taken part inthe wonderful blessings thatGod is pouring upon me.”In the future, Ruthie saysshe plans to “give back to thecommunity that has so generouslyassisted me in the pursuit of mydreams.”VolodymyrReligionVOLODYMYRCuriosity attracted Volodymyr to an evangelisticseries in the Ukraine in 1993. The meetings were beingheld by Americans, and he wanted to see “what theylooked like and how they talked.” Besides meeting theAmerican preacher, Volodymyr met and fell in love withJesus and joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church.After earning a baccalaureate degree at the ZaokskiTheological Seminary in Russia, Volodymyr served for fouryears as a pastor in the Southern Ukrainian Conference.Last year he came to the United States with his wife andtwo children, and as a recipient of the McKee Foods GraduateReligion Scholarship, Volodymyr is pursuing a master’s degreein religion at Southern.He misses full-time ministry, so he takes everyopportunity to be involved in local churches. YADIRAJAMIE“I want to be the first person inmy family to reach the accomplishmentand blessing of higher education andbreak the cycle that has been my family’sdestiny,” says Yadira. Without education,she says, her family has “struggled its wayto success.”Yadira is grateful for the opportunity to obtain her dreamof a better life. It’s through financial assistance like the K.W.Grader Nursing Scholarship that she says “this monumentaldream will be attainable for me.”After she completes her nursing degree, Yadira says shewants to “make a difference in the lives of many people in theworld.”After graduation when Jamie starts making “real money,”he wants to follow the example of the generous donors whoestablished the Edward D. Shaffer Memorial EndowedScholarship.“I appreciate your sacrifice for Christian education,”Jamie says. “I understand sacrifice.”His parents were always committed to givingJamie a Christian education, and his family livedfrugally to ensure it. When his father was diagnosedwith carcinoma in 2005 and died a year later, financialanxiety compounded his family’s devastating loss. Now Jamieexpresses gratefulness for the giving spirit of supporters ofSouthern students.“This came at a good time,” he says.As a financial administration major, Jamie says hisconviction is that “business should not be for personal desiresand self-satisfaction but for our Savior Jesus Christ and tofurther His wonderful gospel.”YadiraNursingJamieAccounting4 l PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT 2007-2008ENDOWMENT l 5

SHANELKELLYThe Eva Pangborn Memorial scholarship was an answerto prayer for Shanel. She wasn’t sure how she could continueher education at Southern because of financial concerns.“I diligently prayed that the Lord would make a way forme,” she says, “and I had faith that He would.” Shanel praisesGod for providing opportunities that have outweighed herexpectations. “He is an amazing God!” she exclaims.Shanel is a senior liberal arts educationmajor with aspirations to eventually becomean elementary school principal, school districtsuperintendent, and college professor.“Your gift will help fulfill my dreams byallowing me to further my education atSouthern Adventist University,” Shanelsays. “Thank you.”Kelly loves action, adrenaline, andadventure.“God has shown me in so manyways that His hand is over my life, andI cannot wait to see what He has instore for me,” she says. Campaign for Health and Healing updateApproximately 90 percent of the goal has been raised for the Hulsey Wellness Center and Florida HospitalHall. Many of the dollars raised are pledges. There are also pay-per-use services such asmassage, personal training, lessons, short-term child care forpotty-trained children, the indoor rock-climbing wall, andhuman-performance lab testing. Membership does not includethe use of the Iles P.E. Center. Members and nonmembersalike will be able to benefit from the center’s many wellnessrelatedclasses.As Southern prepares to open the Hulsey WellnessCenter, it isn’t merely a building whose doors are beingopened. Students who learn and practice healthy livingwithin these walls will have doors opened to a healthierfuture. Thank you for your part in helping openthese doors.Florida Hospital HallAs the final touches are being made to the HulseyWellness Center, footings are being poured for the newnursing building, Florida Hospital Hall. The name of thisbuilding honors an alliance between Southern and FloridaHospital in which the two institutions will work togetherto provide nursing students with educational opportunitiesthat will help smooth the transition between the classroomand the workplace for the more than 500 students pursuingnursing degrees at Southern.This relationship, though new in one sense, has ahistorical foundation. Endowments & ScholarshipsThe Endowed Scholarships at Southern Adventist University provide a vital resource for students. Some endowments are created to fund programs or to maintaincampus buildings and grounds, but most are for student scholarships.Many of our donors have established endowments to honor a family member or friend or to establish a personal legacy.
