22 | Perhaps Today | May–June 2007happening to me?” — notrebelling. For forty years thechildren of Israel wandered inthe wilderness, missing out onthe blessing of going into thePromised Land.As a matter of necessity, theroad out of Egypt’s slavery ledthrough the desert. But theIsraelites did not go throughthe desert patiently. Theygriped, complained, doubted, and rebelled! The more theymurmured and rebelled, thelonger they had to wait. The land God had promisedwas out there, just an elevendaymarch away (seeDeuteronomy 1:2). It waswonderful country — almostliterally “flowing with milk andhoney.” But most of theIsraelites died in the desert, wandering around and aroundin the wilderness until theymissed out on the blessing. Itwas real! God had intended forthem to have it! But their lackof prayer, lack of faith, andlack of patience ultimatelydestroyed them.Forty years later, when thedoubters and murmurers weredead, Joshua led the newgeneration — and a handful offaithful old-timers — into theland of Canaan.Oh, my dear friend, therehave been times in my lifewhen I was tempted to focuson the problem and not on thesolution God was going to giveme. In those moments, I wasbecoming part of the problem!Have you had that experience?Isn’t it wonderful that God isfaithful? He keeps on remindingus to pray ... to wait in faith ... tobe patient and not to give up orrebel. And as we wait, the Spiritof God comes to us, teaches us,helps us, and meets our need! When it happens — when thedarkness falls away and thepower of God breaks throughthe limitations of our lives andThere are times when we need to wait — notimpatiently, but bravely, stoutheartedly, and with courage. In those timesthe Holy Spirit will come to us . . . andteach us . . . and help us.sets us free — how we rejoice! We gratefully discover that —in the words of Solomon andDavid, “The Lord is our salvation, our refuge, and our strongtower!” (see 2 Samuel 22:3;Proverbs 18:10; Psalm 61:3).“Thank You, God,” weexclaim. “We almost missedthe blessing!”Dear Dr.Van I mpe“I don’t think I have EVERmissed one of yourbroadcasts since I firstdiscovered you years ago ...until we recently cancelledsatellite TV to cutexpenses.
