<strong>The</strong> <strong>Princess</strong> Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust isa member of UCL Partners and the NorthLondon <strong>Cancer</strong> Network.<strong>The</strong> aim of the cancer network is to ensure thatservices are patient centred and that patientshave access to the same high quality of care.This leaflet describes the role of the lung cancermulti-<strong>disciplinary</strong> team at <strong>Princess</strong> AlexandraHospital who are involved in your care.<strong>Lung</strong> cancer is the most common cancer in theUK (<strong>Cancer</strong> Research UK, 2008). <strong>The</strong> main lungmalignancies are:◗◗◗◗◗◗Non small cell lung cancerSmall cell lung cancerMalignant mesothelioma<strong>The</strong> multi-<strong>disciplinary</strong> team<strong>The</strong> team consists of doctors, nurses and otherhealth care professionals who are responsiblefor assessment, diagnosis and treatment ofpatients with a lung cancer.<strong>The</strong> team is made up of the following:Respiratory teamDr P Russell (Joint <strong>Lung</strong> <strong>MDT</strong> Lead)Dr D NewberryDr J WallerDr S SundaramDr N Navani (based at UCLH)Clinical oncologists(from the North Middlesex Hospital)Dr J Singer (Joint <strong>Lung</strong> <strong>MDT</strong> Lead)Dr N GuptaThoracic surgeon(at the Heart Hospital, London)Mr D Lawrence<strong>Lung</strong> cancer nurse specialists (your key worker)Tracey HoreySara HymasConsultant radiologistsDr M LongDr T SikdarHistopathologistDr V SundaresanPalliative care specialist teamHelp to support in the management ofsymptoms and give emotional support. You canbe referred to the palliative care team at anypoint of your illness.<strong>MDT</strong> co-ordinator<strong>The</strong> clerical member of the team who coordinatesthe team and their meetings, recordsthe discussions and helps to track patients alongtheir care pathway.<strong>The</strong> multi-<strong>disciplinary</strong> team (<strong>MDT</strong>) meets everyMonday to discuss individual cases. All relevantinvestigations such as scans, results of biopsiesand blood tests are discussed and the teamdecide on what treatment to recommend. <strong>The</strong>results of your case will be communicated withyou either in clinic or via a telephone call fromthe nurse specialist. You may be required toattend other hospitals for investigations ortreatment.Please ask questions about your investigations,diagnosis and treatment plan, it is importantthat you understand and are involved in thedecision making process.<strong>The</strong> team work together with you and yourGP to give you and your family any help andsupport you may need.
