Issue 9, 2010 2010 年 第 9 期A time for mourning沉 痛 悼 念What had been a peaceful summer holiday for Hong Kong ended intragedy on 23 August 2010 when a group of Hong Kong tourists wereheld hostage in Manila, the Philippines, which resulted in eight deadand seven injured.A solemn ceremony was held on the airport apron at the night of 25 August, when thegovernment-chartered flight brought back the eight survivors and the bodies of the eightvictims, along with their family members.Officials from the HKSAR and Central governments, including Henry Tang, ChiefSecretary of HKSAR Government and Li Gang, Deputy Director of the Central GovernmentLiaison Office, expressed their condolences to the injured and the victims’ families.Wreaths were laid on the caskets as they were wheeled out from the aircraft with thebagpipe music accompanying the deceased in their last journey.On 26 August, Hong Kong International Airport joined the rest of the city to mourn thevictims of the hostage crisis. Flags were lowered at half-mast. A public announcementwas made throughout the terminals to remind passengers, staff and customers to observea three-minute silence at 8am. Performances and other corporate events were cancelled.The Airport Authority offers our condolences to the departed’s family members. 每 月 要 聞Grand honour 崇 高 榮 譽Airport Authority (AA) Chairman Dr Marvin Cheung hosted a celebratorydinner on 22 July 2010 for former AA Chairman Dr Victor Fung, who wasrecently awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal by the HKSAR Chief Executive.Dr Fung was recognised for his remarkable contributions to the community,especially during the period when he was Chairman of the AA Board from 1999 to2008. It has become the third stand inaccommodating superjumbo A380, the double-deck aircraft with acapacity of over 500 passengers. This upgraded parking stand increases theairport service level by shortening passengers’ disembarkation time to 11 or12 minutes from the previous 15 minutes.Currently, Singapore Airlines is flying A380 to HKIA on one of its five dailyflights. He appreciated the results achieved by thecompany in the areas of finance management, operationalefficiency, and market development.Strong traffic growth has been witnessed for the airportthis year. In the first seven months of 2010, it recorded ayear-on-year growth of 43%, 42% and 37% in passengerthroughput, cargo volume and aircraft movementsrespectively, making the record high for all three categories.Cathay Pacific staged an event on 10 August 2010 at Hong KongInternational Airport (HKIA) to introduce the features of thenew Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal, which will beginoperations in early 2013.Taking up around 10 hectares, the HK$5.5 billion cargo terminal isequipped with a number of sophisticated operational features, includingits HK$1.4 billion mechanical handling system which will be the world’smost advanced. It can handle 2.6 million tonnes of air cargo throughputeach year, further boasting the efficiency and competitiveness of HongKong as an international air cargo hub. More than 800 guests, including governmentofficials and business partners in the aviation industry and travel trade,attended the memorable occasion.A quarter of a century ago on the same date, the airline flew its maiden flightfrom Hong Kong to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. Conserving water 節 約 用 水Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has 3.4million m 2 of green area and over 100,000 trees.To keep the grass and trees alive, we need touse an average of 500 m 3 of water a day to irrigate thelandscape. Instead of using drinking water, irrigationwater is used from the wastewater treatment planton the airport island that processes greywater fromwater basins of airport washrooms, in-flight cateringcompanies and even aircraft washing. We have beenusing such water management methods since theopening of HKIA. Last year, over 1.1 million m 3 wasprocessed in the plant. About 17%, or 190,000m 3 of thetreated water was reused for irrigation.Back in 2007, the Airport Authority (AA) investedHK$6 million to introduce the city’s largest membranebiological reactor (MBR) to treat an increasing volumeof greywater. The MBR was introduced from Japan andcontains 2,400 membranes covered by tiny organismswhich digest organic pollutants in waste water. In the seminar, over 200 participantslearnt the tips to provide excellent customer service to passengers atthe airport, such as paying attention to customers’ facial expressions,reacting to customers’ needs swiftly, and going an extra mile.The seminar marked the second session in a series of HKIACustomer Service Seminar launched in June 2010. Carbon reduction tipsHong Kong International Airport (HKIA) joined the HongKong Carbon Reduction Campaign in April 2009, and hasbeen actively supporting the campaign by organising anumber of training workshops, holding an exhibition at Terminal 2and HKIA Tower, and engaging more than 80 staff to register on thecampaign website and pledge to live a low carbon lifestyle.The campaign, organised by The Climate Group, is the first crossindustrycollaboration on climate change by companies in HongKong. It promotes low carbon lifestyle among employees and theirfamilies of the participating companies.Just by developing or changing some of our habits, we can allcontribute to a green world. From this issue onwards, we will sharewith you some tips to live a low carbon life.減 碳 秘 訣港 國 際 機 場 於 2009 年 4 月 參 加 「 香 港 減 碳 行 動 」, 並 給 予全 力 支 持 。 機 場 除 了 舉 辦 一 系 列 培 訓 工 作 坊 外 , 亦 在 二 號 客運 大 樓 及 機 場 行 政 大 樓 舉 行 展 覽 。 此 外 , 還 有 逾 80 名 員 工於 「 香 港 減 碳 行 動 」 的 網 站 登 記 , 承 諾 實 踐 低 碳 生 活 。這 項 行 動 由 氣 候 組 織 舉 辦 , 首 次 由 全 港 不 同 行 業 機 構 合作 應 對 氣 候 變 化 , 藉 此 推 動 參 與 機 構 的 員 工 及親 友 實 踐 低 碳 生 活 。我 們 只 要 培 養 或 改 變 部 分 生 活 習慣 , 便 可 為 綠 化 地 球 出 力 。 從 本 期 開 始 ,我 們 會 與 讀 者 分 享 一 些 低 碳 生 活 秘 訣 。Lighting consumes 22% of household electricity use and 11% of householdenergy use.• Use more natural lights:• Paint walls in light colours to brighten rooms.• Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to let in as muchdaylight as possible.• Clean the windows regularly.• For ladies, put your dressing table next to the window to utilisenatural lighting for a perfect make-up.• Use a task lamp to focus light just where you need it, rather than lightingup the entire room.• Put lamps in the corners of rooms to allow more light to be reflected thanif positioned more centrally along a wall.• Replace incandescent bulbs with energy-saving light bulbs. About 90%of the energy used by an incandescent bulb generates heat insteadof light. An energy-saving light bulb consumes only about 25% theelectricity used by an incandescent bulb but lasts up to 10 times longer.• Recycle your mercury-containing lamps to avoid making damage tothe environment. 每 月 要 聞Kids can do!小 朋 友 做 得 到 !Donned in the uniforms of pilot, flight attendant, airportpolice, and reporter, over a thousand kids got their firsttaste of being an airport community member. This isHong Kong International Airport’s special Summer Job ExperienceProgramme for school children aged between three and eight.The programme aims to give children a fun and memorableairport experience, and let them learn a few things during thesummer holiday. Each day, nearly 100 kids receive two hourstraining on role-playing one of the four job types. A certificate isgiven to each participant who joins the programme.The programme, started on 22 July, has received overwhelmingresponse. Grooming futurehigh-flyers培 育 未 來 棟 樑Yu Chan 陳 毅 榆Miki Chan 陳 穎 欣Students Yu Chan and Miki Chan, star performers of the AA’sSummer Fiesta programme, displayed their talent at the airport.學 生 陳 毅 榆 及 陳 穎 欣 參 與 「 機 場 夏 日 嘉年 華 」 的 表 演 節 目 , 在 機 場 盡 展 才 藝 。Yu Chan, 19, has been enchanting passengers at boarding gates with magicshows during the summer holiday. The budding magician, who is pursuingan Associate Degree at City University of Hong Kong, began practicing themysterious arts four years ago.The airport has become his first important performance platform withaudiences from diverse cultures. “The airport provides a great stage and goodopportunities. The airport is like a 360-degree stage because passengers watchthe show from all directions. I have to be very familiar with the steps and avoidmaking any noticeable mistakes,” he said.His magic performances were delivered to the airport audiences as part ofSummer Fiesta, an annual programme organised by the Airport Authority (AA),Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Tung Chung Integrated Services, and Hong KongFederation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) since 2003. It invites young talents to bringentertainment to the airport terminals and earn valuable performing experience.Apart from magic, aspiring young people also deliver a-cappella, orchestra, balletand even Chinese yoyo performances.Miki Chan, a Form 5 student, is another performer at Summer Fiesta, playingviolin solos at boarding gates. She began learning at the age of six, and is already atgrade seven. This is the first time she performs at the airport. “At the very beginning,I was very nervous, but passengers’ passionate response made me relax a bit. I’mdelighted to be part of passengers’ happy memories in Hong Kong,” she said.Like Yu Chan, she has lived in Tung Chung for over 10 years. Tung Chung hastransformed from remote fishing villages into the home of one of the world’s bestairports. “The community and the airport have very close ties. The communityhas benefitted from growing passenger traffic at the airport as more tourists stopby Tung Chung before they take their flights. More shops and restaurants haveopened and transport service is getting better,” she says.Apart from Summer Fiesta, the AA invites students from neighbouringcommunities to visit the airport on a regular basis, letting them know more aboutthe history, daily operations, and development of HKIA. During the summerholiday this year, nearly 20 visits were organised for 650 students. For youngpeople with the ambition to work in the aviation industry, the AA launched theAirport Ambassador Programme (AAP) with Labour Department and HKFYG in2002. This one-year programme gives young people the opportunity to handleenquiries and provide assistance to travellers. The great news is more than 80%of the graduates were able to acquire jobs in the aviation and travel industries.HKIA has a special place in Yu Chan’s heart. “My mother used to work at theairport. HKIA has provided numerous employment opportunities to the localresidents so they can work in the neighbourhood and spend more time takingcare of their families. Chinese music concertChinese music rang in the air of the staff lounge at HKIATower on 6 August afternoon. It was the third anniversaryconcert of the Airport Authority (AA) Staff Club’s ChineseMusic Ensemble, featuring Guzheng ensemble, Guzheng solo,Sanxian solo, Erhu solo and Pipa solo.
