He further said that the Canadian Government was consideringdeveloping a curriculum in this respect to meet the needs of the local communities, in orderto ensure that Nigerian graduates, like those in the Engineering sector, could be able to solvepractical issues confronting the society rather than acquiring mere theoretical knowledge.The Deputy High <strong>Commission</strong>er disclosed that the Canadian Government had concludedarrangements for a stakeholders’ conference on the proposed training Institute including StateGovernors and the private sector, so as to bring the relevant sectors together to discuss on thebest ways to implement the project.Responding, the Executive Secretary commended the initiative of the Canadian High<strong>Commission</strong>, saying that NUC welcomed any idea that would further the development of theSystem.Also at the meeting was Mr. Chris J. Maiyaki, Deputy Director, Protocol and Chief of Staff tothe Executive Secretary.Executive Secretary Receives CULNU DelegationAdelegation of the Committee ofUniversity Librarians of Nigerian<strong>Universities</strong> (CULNU), on Tuesday,17 <strong>April</strong>, 2012, paid a courtesy call on theExecutive Secretary, <strong>National</strong> <strong>Universities</strong><strong>Commission</strong> (NUC), Professor Julius A.Okojie, OON, in his Office, with a proposalfor the review of the salaries and allowancesof its members. In his speech, the Chairmanof CULNU, Professor Benki S. H. Womboh,University Librarian, Federal University ofTechnology, Yola, said that, considering thefact that Librarians were Principal Officersof universities, it was necessary to upgradetheir entitlements and privileges and placethem at par with their colleagues in theUniversity System.Prof. J. OkojieExecutive Secretary, NUCThe CULNU Chairman also requested that University Librarians be considered for aseverance gratuity of 300% of Annual Basic Salary upon the completion of the new tenure of5 years. He also highlighted that an annual paid international conference be consideredincluding an overseas leave for University Librarians at the end of their tenure, under thesponsorship of their Institutions.Page6
