Support at Curtin Collegepreparingyou <strong>for</strong>universitystudiesFree Support ProgramsA number of support programs are offered free of charge to students toassist in the academic development required to succeed at university.Specifically, at no extra cost to ongoing trimester tuition fees, students canaccess up to seven hours of free support classes per week, enhancing theirper<strong>for</strong>mance at the College and better preparing them <strong>for</strong> future study.<strong>Course</strong>s in Mathematics and Computing are available, along with two keyprograms to assist with English language and Study Skills respectively.The English Development Program is a seven-week course consisting ofone three-hour class per week. <strong>Students</strong> may enter voluntarily or it maybe required as a co-requisite to other units of study. The program focuseson English language and academic writing skills.The Study Skills program is a nine-week course consisting of one twohourclass per week. <strong>Students</strong> enter this program either voluntarily oras a condition of enrolment in the college. The program focuses ondeveloping skills such as time management, learning strategies, criticalthinking, oral presentations, and academic writing.Both the English Development and Study Skills programs are non credit units.Tertiary Communication Skills<strong>Students</strong> who fall marginally under the Curtin College English languagerequirement may be able to enrol in a mixed program consisting ofthe Tertiary Communication Skills (TCS) unit (12 hours per week) plusa maximum of two academic units (preferably units which do not relyheavily on written communication). <strong>Students</strong> are provided with a TCSoffer only after their English has been <strong>for</strong>mally assessed. This mixedprogram extends courses by an additional trimester. Please refer to Page51 <strong>for</strong> TCS fees.Pastoral Care <strong>for</strong> <strong>Students</strong> Under 18 Years ofAge (Minors)Curtin College offers comprehensive care to all international students, butdirects special attention to those students who are under 18 years old.Under Australian law, international minors in Australia must have accessto appropriate care and living arrangements which are organised by theCollege. Accommodation and welfare arrangements may be organisedby parents or guardians, however the College must approve thesearrangements be<strong>for</strong>e final documentation can be issued. Where parents orguardians are not in a position to arrange care and accommodation, theCollege will arrange homestay accommodation <strong>for</strong> the student. Duringthe course of each trimester the College monitors living arrangementsand ensures that minors are made aware of the support services availableto them. Parents are also involved with any major activities or actionsinvolving their son or daughter who is under the age of 18.Dependants and Schooling<strong>International</strong> students at Curtin College who wish to enrol theirdependants into a WA government school, or a CRICOS-registered WAnon-government school*, are responsible <strong>for</strong> paying all tuition fees <strong>for</strong>their dependent(s) and must make necessary enrolments directly withthe school concerned. Curtin College is not responsible <strong>for</strong> the placementof dependents <strong>for</strong> these students. Tuition fees will apply. The costs of anyspecial learning support, <strong>for</strong> example further English Language training,will incur an additional charge over and above the indicative prescribedtuition fee below.
