EditorialMarch towards sustainabilityThe window to save our eco-system from therepercussions of global warming is closing. TheInternational Energy Agency has warned that ifthe world continues to build fossil-fuel powerstations, inefficient factories and buildings at thecurrent pace up to 2017, it will become impossibleto hold down global warming to “safe levels”. Thiswarning is a stark wake-up call to governments, corporations and individuals to stop dragging ourfeet on the green agenda before it is all too late.At Keppel, we take sustainability and stewardshipof the environment seriously. We recognise thatmultinational businesses play a crucial role inreducing the environmental impact throughthe way we do business. Our commitment tosustainability ranks as high amongst our corporatetargets as our economic ambition to create valuefor our shareholders. In our businesses, we embed sustainability intoour product innovation and development. KeppelFELS has advanced its eco rig designs such as theKFELS semisubmersible drilling tender which wonthe ASEAN Outstanding Engineering AchievementAward and the IES (Institution of Engineers,Singapore) Engineering Award. Keppel Land isbuilding new-generation low-carbon buildingswhile Keppel Seghers’ waste-to-energy technologyis helping cities to recover renewable energy fromtheir waste and reduce environmental damagecaused by landfilling.Working across the Group in concerted effort, weare also taking a holistic and systematic approachto integrate carbon management into the dailyoperations of our businesses. We incorporateenergy efficiency improvements and low carbonfootprint considerations during upstream activitiessuch as project planning, systems, design, materialand equipment selection as well as procurementbefore proceeding into downstream activities. Our carbon management project managersare implementing comprehensive monitoringand tracking systems for data collection andmanagement. These systems will ensure regularupdates on energy usage and emissions whichare of high enough granularity such that tailoredcarbon reduction solutions can be developed. Thiswill also enable us to review and refine the Group’scarbon management action plans. In addition, ourbusiness units also collaborate with research anddevelopment organisations and universities in thedevelopment of carbon reduction technologies andkeep abreast of green business best practices.Engaging all our stakeholders, we are increasingcommunication and awareness to solicit thecommitment of our staff, customers, businesspartners and vendors to join us in sustained effortsto save the environment. In 2010, Keppel published our first Group-wideSustainability Report and for the 2011 Report, wewill continue to improve on materiality reportingand performance indicators. The report will serveas a benchmark for us to chart our efforts andprogress. While it is a journey of continuousimprovement, we are attuned to the importanceand urgency of environmental sustainability tosafeguard our planet for future generations. The pressing need for action means thatcorporations and individuals can no longer simplywait for direction from governments before takingaction. At Keppel, we do not wait for regulations, whether in Singapore or overseas, to set the pacefor us. We will take ownership and responsibility.Keppelite I March 2012

24 Special FocusJourney through the desertThe desert palm tree takes many years to mature. A resilient species, it braves harshand bitter climactic conditions. But it prevails eventually, bearing date fruits, full ofthe sweetness of hard-fought survival. This is the story of Lucia Lu,Finance Manager of KeppelSeghers, who has been apioneer on the DomesticSolid Waste ManagementCentre (DSWMC) project. Her grit and gumption has seenher through seven gruellingyears on the project, fromtender stage to contractualnegotiations, constructionto commissioning andhandover.Back in 2005, Lucia wasplucked out of a sistercompany where she hadbeen a finance manager, tobe part of the Keppel Segherscommercial and proposalteam working on the tenderof the DSWMC project. She recalled, “I had limitedexperience and knowledge infinancial modelling and thewaste-to-energy business.I was completely takenaback when I first saw thesea of tender documentsspread across the room.”Trudging through unfamiliarterrains, Lucia workedunder tremendous stressand tight deadlines, holdingon to the helping hands ofseniors and colleagues.qualms but overcame themwith the confidence thatmanagement that placedin her.The sight of the project sitewhen she first arrived wasetched indelibly into hermemory. She shared, “It wasjust an unending stretch ofblue and brown, the sky andthe desert! We could nottell where the site began orended. There was no water, electricity, shops or evenproper roads – just a bumpyride through the desert. I wasdumbfounded as to where orhow to start work.”Being female and withoutknowledge of Arabicadded to her challenges. However, through timeand with persistence andresourcefulness, she learntthe ways of doing businesslocally, from setting up thefirst Keppel office in Doha tofinding staff accommodationamidst the bureaucracy ofacquiring registrations, permits and licences.Confronted with a barrenlandscape and confoundedby the sheer scale andcomplexity of the project,Lucia dug her heels in hardand persisted.Mr Geoffrey Piggott, RegionalManager (Middle East andNorth Africa) of KeppelSeghers joined the projectaround this time and was asignificant source of supportto her. Strong leadership byMr Piggott, an unyieldingteam spirit honed in the fireof challenges, and an innatesense of responsibility to seethe project to fruition, keptLucia going.Against all odds, the projectteam delivered and handedover the DSWMC to the clientin October 2011. Despite thepains and pressures, thejourney through the deserthas been well worth it.In Lucia’s words, “Beingpart of the project has beena life-changing and fruitfulexperience. Empowering Lives 35Tempest talesAfter a visit to China’s Olympic Sailing City, the 10-strong international racefleet, including the Keppel-sponsored Singapore yacht, is sailing towards sunnySan Francisco Bay in California in Race 9 of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.Keppelite catches up with Keppel Ambassadors, Darryl Tai (DT), who was on Leg 1where the team won its first podium position in Brazil, and Celina Chan (CC), whobraved Leg 5 of the race from Gold Coast to Qingdao. What are the conditionslike onboard?CC: The journey fromSingapore to Qingdao waslike being in a washingmachine! Waves, about sixmetres high, were comingat us every 15 seconds. Thejourney was very bumpywhich made helming andmothering (cooking andcleaning) difficult. How did you feel whenyou were sailing intoMarina at Keppel Bayduring the stopover?CC: I was feeling veryemotional when we sailedin, especially when I lookeddown from the spreaderbar and saw the crowdwaving and cheering myname. What did you find mostchallenging about thejourney?CC: Bringing down thesail at the bow in freezingtemperatures was reallytough. I had to steel myselfmentally to overcome thetough conditions. Also, when tiredness setsin, it is a challenge to stayalert to safety hazards andadapt to our surroundings.I witnessed a teammate,Graeme, losing his balancewhen the boat jerked. He fell backwards, hit hishead on a screw on theceiling of the saloon, andsuffered a deep cut.DT: Like Celina, my patiencewas tested by difficultweather conditions. Whenthe weather warms, itgets really hot anduncomfortable below thedeck. How can you apply thelessons learnt onboardto your work at Keppel?CC: The most crucial lessonwould be the importance oftaking ownership of safety, whether onboard a yacht orat the yard. We should alwaysunderstand our operatingenvironment, be familiarwith safety procedures, andnever, ever let our guarddown.DT: I’ve learnt thatperseverance is essential tosuccess. We should relishour work challengesand enjoy the process ofovercoming them.CC: A Can Do! spirit is whatit takes for a Keppelite toembrace challenges. I can’tthank Keppel enough for thiswonderful opportunity, and Ireally appreciate the relentlesssupport and encouragementfrom my bosses, friends andfamily.DT: The race has been alife-changing experience forme, and I’m grateful for thechance of a lifetime. keppeliteKeppel Ambassadors Darryl Tai (centre) and Celina Chan (right) with Clipper Round-the-Worlder, Sherlyn ChenKeppelite I March 2012
