Virtually every female astronaut who has flown in space was a <strong>Girl</strong> Scout.Environment & Outdoor Education<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> not only engage in activity and exploration,but develop an appreciation for the outdoors. In an erawhere environmental issues are growing and the naturalresources are shrinking, GSGLA is focusing on inspiring girlsto embrace their surroundings, develop outdoor skills andprotect the world. In <strong>2011</strong>, GSGLA served as a pilot councilfor the Forever Green Take Action Earth Hour initiativewhere our girls encouraged thousands to turn <strong>of</strong>f their lightsfor an hour and found creative ways to spend the electricityfreehour.STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> has a strong history <strong>of</strong> developing pioneers inthe fields <strong>of</strong> science and technology. In fact, virtually allfemale astronauts were <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>. GSGLA <strong>of</strong>fers hands-onexperiences in STEM that strengthen the natural aptitudes<strong>of</strong> girls and builds their comfort level and mastery in math,rocketry, electrical engineering, biology and robotics.STEM also helps girls learn goal-setting, team-building anddecision-making skills.PG 9PROGRAM AREAS
