The Corian ® skin for architectureDuPont Corian ® combines aesthetics with high performance, which makes it an ideal choice for panelised façade systems.Coloured all the way through, DuPont Corian ® made-to-measurepanels offer easy maintenance, good weather and UV resistance, and high-quality detailing and finishing possibilities. The panelscan also be repaired in situ.Made-to-measurefabricationStandard Corian ® panels (0.93 x 3.66 m) areassembled, seamed and sanded. The maximum finished size is 5.5 x 2.2 m(W x H), and the panel thickness is 12.3 mm.The joints are reinforced at the rear by 6 mmthick strips with a width of 5 cm.The panels are supplied directly by ourCorian ® Quality Network fabricator.Joints and thermalexpansionOverlapped or open joints are located on allpanel edges. The joint width depends onthe thermal expansion coefficient of Corian ®and the panel dimensions. The minimumhorizontal width is 16 mm, and the minimumvertical width is 8 mm for a maximum panelsize of 5.5 x 2.2 m.Corian ® panelVerticalaluminiumrailSquirrel TMinsertAluminiumbracketFacades with open rainscreen cladding offernew design options, but the insulation andstructure still require effective, lifelongpro tec tion from the harmful effects of theelements to which it is constantly exposed. In particular UV radiation can compromisethe long-term performance of secondaryprotection membranes. That’s why DuPont hasdeveloped Tyvek ® UV Facade, an ad vancedprotective membrane specifically designed tomeet the needs of open cladding constructions.Easy fittingFAÇALU ® double metal frameworkThis framework, made by ETANCO, ensuresan even surface over the entire façade andaccommodates the thermal expansion ofthe Corian ® panels. The fixing devices areconcealed. The fixing method is designed toallow movement due to thermal expansionand to accommodate deflection due to windloads and other horizontal loads that canproduce rotational forces.FAÇALU ® aluminium bracketsThe C-shaped brackets fromETANCO clip into the secondaryframework with a minimum of effort.SQUIRREL TM metal inserts forCorian ® panelsCorian ®These inserts have a pull-outstrength of approximately 400 kgwith a thickness of 8 mm.They are embedded in the Corian ®sheets by Corian ® Joint adhesive. The resultis a completely concealed fitting.metal insert

“We were impressed by this noble and rich materialfrom DuPont, which enabled us to depart fromtraditional façade cladding systems,” says Jean-ChristopheMasnada of the King Kong architectural office.Easy installationFaçade fitters should be trained by DuPontde Nemours to work with Corian ® and besupported by a Corian ® Quality Networkfabricator during the project. The C-shaped brackets are attached toinserts embedded in the material. Theyclip onto the secondary framework every45 cm. The lifting system has to be designedcarefully, as the fixing system allowsa tolerance of only 1 cm for attaching eachpanel to the framework. The panels can be lifted by using a metalframe with suction cups, or by usinga movable platform. One example of the high-quality finish thatcan be achieved with Corian ® is the fact thatthe window frames can also be fabricatedin the same material, ensuring a perfectmatch between the window frames and thecladding.Convenientmain te nance andgood weatheringcharaC teristicsCorian ® panels resist attack by a broad rangeof paints, coatings and chemicals. They areeasy to maintain in terms of cleaning, graffitiremoval, repair and replacement.Corian ® panels are renewable: the originalappearance can usually be restored bycleaning and sanding as necessary.Weathering characteristics. DuPont hasa list of colours recommended for exteriorcladding applications. These colours are expectedto meet architectural guidelines for acolour change of less than or equal to 5 units(ΔE) in 10 years based on tests according toASTM standards (ASTM G7 & ASTM G155).recommended colours of Corian ®for exterior cladding:,Abalone, Adobe,Antarctica , Aurora , Aztec Gold, Beach Glass, BeigeFieldstone, Bisque, Blackberry Ice, Blue Pebble,Bone, Butter Cream, Cameo White, Caribbean,Clam Shell, Dove, Dusk, Eclipse, Everest, Festival,Fossil, Glacier White, Gray Fieldstone, Linen, NightSky, Pepper Ivory, Primrose, Sahara , Savannah ,Seashell, Summer Sky, Tarragon, Tumbled Glass,Vanilla, Venaro White, Whitecap.ShapesDuPont Corian ® Exterior Cladding canbe fabricated into a variety of shapes bydifferent forming, shaping and machiningtechniques to create unique designs andfinishes. When heated to 165°C, DuPontCorian ® Exterior Cladding can easily beformed into various shapes. Sheets of12.3 mm thickness can be formed, rayonmax= 50 mm.Procedures for the fabrication of DuPontCorian ® Exterior Cladding have beendeveloped from over 40 years of experiencewith the material, in many different formsand applications. Fabrication methodsare described in the DuPont Corian ®“Fabrication Manual” available onwww.corian.com.

Different techniques canbe used for surface finishing, partial surfacefinishing or full cutting for different shapes, patterns or inlays.Surface machining of DuPont Corian ®Exterior Cladding is typically done with routingtools to create desired shapes, and withsanding or polishing tools for different finishes(semi-gloss, mat or rough-textured). Routerscan achieve a fine level of detail for surfacecutting, and CNC routers achieve intricatepatterns and textures. Since DuPont Corian ®Exterior Cladding is relatively easy to cut andfinish, without the need for specialiseddiamond abrasives and saws, fabrication canbe done quickly and with a high level of qualityeven on-site.Thermoforming of DuPont Corian ® ExteriorCladding is typically done with mediumtemperatureovens (165°C) and pressuremoulds. Geometric patterns or naturalpatterns can be moulded into the surface toachieve a number of different architecturalfinishes.TranslucencyDuPont Corian ® Exterior Cladding allowssome diffuse light transmission, dependingupon colour and aggregate. Solid lightcolours such as white and beige are themost translucent, and dark colours withlarge aggregates are the least translucent.DuPont Corian ® Exterior Cladding can befabricated to achieve different levels of lighttransmission by reducing the thickness ofthe material. As the material gets thinner, itallows more light through. For additional information, please contact your Corian © representativeor call us on our free phone number:or visit our web site atwww.corian.com / www.corian.co.ukAtelier d’Architecture King Kong: www.kingkong.frToll free number:0800/962 116 (UK)1800/553 252 (IRL)0800/91 72 72 (F)0800/1810018 (D)0800/554614 (CH)800/876750 (I)0800/29 5833 (A)0800/96 666 (B)800/23079 (L)901/120 089 (E)0800/022 35 00 (NL)+30 210 3418050 (Greece)+46 31 57 68 00 (Nordic Countries)+48 22 320 0900 (Poland)+351 227 536 900 (Portugal)+7 495 7972233 (Russia)+380 44 495 2684 (Ukraine & Kazakhstan)+40 31 62 04 111 (Romania, Bulgaria & Serbia)+420 257 414 213 (Central & Eastern Europe)+420 257 414 213 (Czech republic, Slovakia& Hungary)+971 4 321 1530 (Pakistan, Middle East, Africa, Malta & Cyprus)+90 212 340 0400 (Turkey, Israel & Central Asia*)* = Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan & KyrgyzstanCopyright © 2008 DuPont.
