While <strong>the</strong>re is at this time no clear explanation for chronic pa<strong>in</strong>,recent work on <strong>the</strong> nervous system suggests that it may result from pathologicalchanges <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nervous mechanisms that result <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> non-pa<strong>in</strong>fulstimuli be<strong>in</strong>g perceived as pa<strong>in</strong>ful. These changes, it is believed, may be precipitatedby peripheral events, such as an accident, but may persist well beyond <strong>the</strong> normalrecovery time for <strong>the</strong> precipitat<strong>in</strong>g event.
