The Health Care OpportunityThe health care industry in the United States is characterized by large and growinglevels of expenditure. 1According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,Americans spent $2.1 trillion on health care in 2006, or $7,026 per person. This spendingaccounted for 16 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 2 The fraction of the GDP consumedby health will only increase. The growth in the national health expenditure is expected to outpaceGDP growth for the foreseeable future. 3Important demographic trends will place an increasing strain on the U.S. health caresystem over the next several decades. 4 The aging of the Baby Boomer generation is expected tolead to an increase of nearly 30 percent in the population over 65 years of age between 2006 and2017, and nearly 100 percent by 2030. 5 Life expectancy is also expected to continue to grow,representing a significant extension of the lives of the American population. 6 Meanwhile, thepercentage of the population living with chronic illnesses and disabilities is expected to continue1.
