DARK LIGHT.Glare is the objective reduction of visual performance and/or thesubjective alteration of vision caused by the appearance of highluminances or high luminance contrasts in the field of vision.Direct glare is glare caused by luminaires or a light source (theSun, for example).The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) defines glareas “visual conditions in which there is excessive contrast oran inappropriate distribution of light sources that disturbs theobserver or limits the ability to distinguish details and objects”.Such factors as eye adaptation or the angle betwe<strong>en</strong> the pointat which a task is being performed and the illuminating lightsource has a significant impact on the experi<strong>en</strong>ce of glare.The quantitative method for measuring direct glare is calledthe Unified Glare Rating. The unified glare rating (UGR) is ameasurem<strong>en</strong>t of the light within a specific <strong>en</strong>vironm<strong>en</strong>t, asrecomm<strong>en</strong>ded by the International Commission on Illumination.The lower the UGR, the fewer glares is pres<strong>en</strong>t.Another tool that can be used to assess direct glare is calledthe Söllner Diagram.
