MARGARET BURLAND DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP CODE NO <strong>712</strong>REGULATIONS:1. The Scholarship shall be k<strong>no</strong>wn as the Margaret Burland Doctoral Scholarship.2. One Scholarship will <strong>no</strong>rmally be awarded once every three years (or more orless often depending on funds available), and will provide a tax-free stipend of upto $25,000 per annum plus compulsory domestic PhD or MD tuition fees, for upto 36 months. Part-time scholars shall be paid pro-rata for up to 72 months.3. The Scholarship will be awarded to <strong>doctoral</strong> candidates who have paid the fees,or arranged to pay the fees, for full-time enrolment in the degree of Doctor ofPhilosophy, Doctor of Medicine or the research component of a<strong>no</strong>ther approveddoctorate in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. The Scholarship may alsobe available to students for whom socially compelling reasons make part-timeenrolment preferable (see Note ii).4. The Scholarship is tenable by domestic or international students who are eligibleto pay domestic fees and who will reside outside of New Zealand for <strong>no</strong> morethan 12 months over the period in which they are enrolled in their <strong>doctoral</strong>degree.5. The basis of selection will be academic merit, the quality of the research proposalor project, the candidate’s financial situation and endorsement by the proposedsupervisor and host academic unit.6. The Scholarship will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council uponthe recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising the Associate Dean(Postgraduate) of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (or <strong>no</strong>minee), andtwo members of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences’ Postgraduate StudiesCommittee.7. Payments will commence from the <strong>doctoral</strong> registration date or the date<strong>no</strong>minated by the Scholarships Sub-Committee. A further six months of<strong>scholarship</strong> funding may be available, subject to Scholarships Sub-Committeeapproval.8. The Scholarship may be held concurrently with any other award or grant as longas a) the terms of that award or grant permit and b) the University of AucklandCouncil is informed and approves.9. To comply with the full-time study requirement in Regulation 3, the amount ofadditional and paid work a Scholar may undertake either inside or outside theUniversity shall <strong>no</strong>t exceed a total of 500 hours per year.10. A Scholarship may be terminated or suspended by the University of AucklandCouncil should it receive a report from the Dean of the Faculty of Medical andHealth Sciences that a candidate’s academic progress is unsatisfactory.11. The University of Auckland Council is <strong>no</strong>t obliged to make an award if in any yearthere is <strong>no</strong> candidate of sufficient merit.12. The University of Auckland has the power to amend or vary these Regulationsprovided that there is <strong>no</strong> departure from the main purpose of the Scholarship.13. Applications by way of a form <strong>no</strong>rmally close with the Scholarships Office on 1November in the year preceding the award.Notes:i) Any publications arising from work done by the recipient during the tenure of the<strong>scholarship</strong> shall ack<strong>no</strong>wledge the assistance given by the Margaret Burland DoctoralScholarship.ii)Recipients of Margaret Burland Doctoral Scholarships are <strong>no</strong>rmally required to beenrolled on a full-time basis. However, students for whom socially compelling reasonsmake part-time enrolment preferable may apply to hold the Scholarship on a part-timebasis pro-rated. Socially compelling reasons could include a) carer responsibilities for:pre-school and/or school-aged children; an invalid or disabled partner, child or parent;or b) medical condition(s), impairment(s) or disabilities.
