Who We AreThe Quesnel Community Foundation is a locallyrun public foundation that builds and managesendowment funds to support charitable activitiesin our area. We are autonomous and governed bya volunteer board of local leaders. Foundationgrants support a broad range of projects thatoffer a service to the community or addressa community challenge or concern. We are amember of Community Foundations of Canada.$121,072$100,000$80,000$60,000$40,000$20,0000!Total grants awardedarded$13,600$11,822$10,000$6,700$18,200$20,750$25,000$15,0002002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009Annual grants to the communityPresident's ReportThe last year has seen many challenges andchanges to the Quesnel Community Foundation. No one foresaw the incredible decrease in valuesthat resulted in negative investment returns for thefi rst time in many years. Despite the fact we havequite conservative investments we were facing negativereturns for the year. We saw the value of our fundwith the Vancouver Foundation fall in value as well, and like other charitable organizations in Canada and around the world, wewere caught in the storm that has battered fi nancial markets.Unfortunately that had an impact on our ability to make grants, and accordinglygrant amounts for 2009 were lower than anticipated. However, wewere able to give $15,000 in grants to six deserving organizations. We arevery aware of the fact the Foundation needs to continue to take a long termview of our fi nancial results and ensure the stability of the fund. It is ironicthat in last year’s report our president at the time, Bob Norman, was predictingreaching a $1 million fund by 2010 or even possibly the end of 2009. Itnow appears that a longer time frame would be more realistic.Last year saw a number of changes in the directors with Bob Normanleaving after a long term as director and as president. Also Dawn Dubuc andChris McIver left as directors and their experience and advice will be missed. However, I am pleased with the directors that have joined and I know theywill be dedicated to the Foundation. They are Doug Service, Roy Josephy,Shirley Keen and recently Sheri Coles. Brian Rankin, Lorna Townsend, SimonTurner, and Kevin McKelvie continue to provide experience and expertiseto the Board. We are fortunate to have our long time co-ordinator, NancyLilienweiss continue with the foundation and her experience and advice isinvaluable.Although I am quite new to the Foundation Board I am sure that with thesupport of the current directors we will have a successful year. We remaincommitted to progress. I hope you will consider supporting the Foundation. If you wish to make any comment or require any further information I can becontacted at 250-992-5495.Alex Coffey, PresidentThe QCF EndowmentTotal funds invested for the Foundation. Your timeHow to giveVolunteers are the essential pedestal of any charitable organization. If you’re interested in volunteeringwith us, please contact Alex at (250) 992-5495 or Nancy at (250) 992-6190.A gift to the FoundationQCF gratefully accepts the following kinds of gifts:-cash, cheques-multi-year pledges-stocks and bonds-real estate and other assets-gifts made through estate planning. If you are interested in donating to the QCF, we suggest speaking with your fi nancial advisor. If you would like moreinformation, please contact our Fund Development Chair, Brian Rankin at (250) 992-7644.The Best Fit for Your DonationInterest from all donations to the QCF is distributed in one of the following ways:Agency Funds - Organizations can create a special endowment fund in their name. While the QCF holds theoriginal investment in perpetuity, interest is returned to the sponsoring organization annually.Designated Funds - You name the fi eld of interest or charitable organization to benefi t from your fund, whichwill support your favourite charity or fi eld of interest in perpetuity.Discretionary Funds - These unrestricted funds allow the Grants Committee to decide where earnings canbe used most effectively each year, yet allow the donors to name the fund and be recognized. This fund may besuitable for a family, a memorial, or a company.Donor Advised Funds - These funds allow donors to be actively involved with the QCF in selecting recipientcharitable organizations. This type of fund is considered the most effective alternative to the creation of a privatefoundation.Field of Interest Funds - Your gift will focus on a particular fi eld, but is not limited to one organization. Youdefi ne the charitable area (such as the arts or health), but entrust the Foundation to select specifi c projects forsupport.Flow-through Funds - Non-permanent funds passed through to qualifi ed charitable organizations accordingto the donor’s objectives. This choice accommodates donors who desire the protection of anonymity for theirphilanthropic giving, an impartial third party to distribute their community gifts, or who are not registered charities, but wish to provide tax receipts for donations. In Memoriam Funds - Donors can choose to make a gift to the Foundation in memory of a friend or relative,or to express sympathy. In Memoriam donations of $10,000 or more can be designated toward a fi eld of interest.Scholarship Funds - Your money will be used to set up scholarships in your name or in honour of someoneelse, to help deserving individuals to receive education or training they might not otherwise obtain.Undesignated Funds - The income from your fund supports community projects designated by the QCFduring and after your lifetime. Your fund will support a range of charitable projects and is best able to address theneeds of tomorrow - needs that may be diffi cult to predict today.Page e5
