Music atWalshHitting13The shineof instruments,a flash of color, theprecision of the march as thedrums roll…there’s almostnothing more exciting thanwatching, and listening to, amarching band take the fieldbefore a football game. But it takes a lot of hard work and initiativeon the part of many people to bring thatshow to the field.“Marching bands have long been synonymouswith college football,” said Dr. BrittCooper, Director of Fine & Performing Arts.“We have long, wanted to bring thatpageantry, that excitement, and thattradition to Walsh University.”For the first time in Walsh history, Cavalierfans will be treated to a fully outfittedmarching band. The Walsh UniversityMarching Band will make its historic debutin Fall 2011. But the real excitement comesfrom knowing that the creation of a newmarching band is just one addition in agrowing Walsh musical arts division. The tradition of the school marching bandhas been associated with the tradition ofcolleges and universities since the early1900’s, when fans were entertained by thefirst modern halftime show presented bythe University of Illinois at a football gameagainst the University of Chicago. The Walsh Marching Band will develop asit transitions from this year’s basketball PepBand to a Stand Band for football games inFall 2010, with the goal to have a full scalemarching band on the field for footballgames in Fall 2011. Future plans include thecreation of a concert band and jazz band forformal musical concerts.“From a practical standpoint, developing amarching band program is another wayto positively impact retention andrecruitment efforts,” said Dr. Cooper.“For our students, it enhances the collegiateexperience by bringing pride and energyto sporting and special events. A strongmarching band is truly the heartbeat ofany university.”The Cavalier Pride Pep Band has beenentertaining the crowd at both men’s andwomen’s Cavalier basketball games sinceNovember. Under the leadership of parttimedirector Mark Zartman, the bandhas drawn rave reviews from fans alreadythrilled with the Cavs new home arena inthe Cecchini Center.“The overall feedback from our fans thisseason has been extremely positive,” saidDale Howard, Athletic Director. “We havebeen working really hard to create theultimate ‘game day experience’ for our studentsand fans. The addition of a quality pepband, coupled with the championship playof our men’s and women’s teams, makes thisone of the best venues in the area.”

a High NotePlans for the bandbegan in the fall of2009 with a searchfor a part-time directorto begin the necessarygroundwork in developinga successfulprogram. MarkMark Zartman Zartman was among50 applicants interested in the position. He brings to Walsh decades of experiencein cultivating and leading a successfulmarching band. He has held the positionof Director of Hudson High School’s wellknown marching band for the last 22 years.“A marching band is something we havealways wanted for Walsh,” said Dr. Cooper.“The expense of outfitting band memberswith uniforms and instruments has been adeterrent in the past. Fortunately, we havethe generous support from patrons suchas Gerald Pellegrino and Pellegrino MusicCenter to help offset the costs associatedwith securing the necessary equipment.”The Walsh Marching Band will play athome football games and at various Walshand community events. The band willperform contemporary and classic rock, jazz, Latin, and traditional band music. There will be new music and drill forevery home game. The time commitmentwill be minimal though forinterested students compared to manyhigh school programs. There will be acamp prior to the start of school in the falland then 2-3 evening rehearsals each weekafter most classes are over.“I’m excited to see a marching band hereat Walsh,” said student Thomas Williams, current Sousaphone player for the Walshpep band member and member of theWalsh Chorale and Chamber Singers.“I know a lot of prospective studentswho love music will take advantage of theopportunity, not only to give of their talent, but to enhance the spirit of the University. It will be a great way for students to getinvolved, build friendships, and showcasetheir abilities as leaders and musicians.”There will also be a limited number ofscholarships to entering freshmen wishingto participate in the Walsh UniversityMarching Band.walsh timesinter 2010

For Dr.Britt Cooperthe addition is only oneof many that he has helped to spearheadin the growing Music Division. “Walsh is aliberal arts institution,” said Dr. Cooper.“What that means is that we provide studentswith the general knowledge necessary tosucceed in a diverse society. Music studyprovides a foundation that enriches theliberal arts studies.”Dr. Cooper was hired in 2003 to replaceretiring music department chair DorothyLing. The position was expanded to aChoral Director and Dr. Cooper launchedthe first Walsh University Chorale of 15members. Within a year the Chorale grewto 43 members and performed for the firsttime with the Canton Symphony Orchestraand conducted a tour of Washington DC,which included a performance in the NationalBasilica. Today, the Walsh University Choraleis a large choir of 70 voices. Musically, theensemble embraces the spiritual heritage ofchoral singing while also performing secularworks of the highest quality. In addition to the Chorale, Dr. Cooperformed The Walsh Chamber Singers in2008. This small select ensemble drawnfrom the Walsh University Chorale isconsidered a travel choir and performedfor an estimated 1,200 people in threestates during their May 2009 concert tourthrough Indiana, Ohio and Illinois.During the four days, the group stoppedin South Bend, Indiana, and performedimpromptu in the extraordinary Basilica ofthe Sacred Heart at the University of NotreDame with Father Peter Rocca in attendance. The Chamber Singers also sang at Mass atSt. Peter’s in the Chicago Loop for over 350congregants. The singers performed at St.Pius X in Granger, for approximately 700people before concluding the trip with aMass performance in Toledo for the Sistersof Notre Dame and approximately onehundred people.15“In addition to being a wonderful performanceexperience for our students, thetrip fulfilled the ambassadorial role of theensemble,” said Dr. Cooper. “Our trip inMay served as an incredible conclusionto a successful year.”This year, the Walsh University Choraleexpanded their annual Christmas Concertperformances with an additional date inDecember in the Our Lady of PerpetualHelp Chapel. Both performances wereconsidered “sold-out” though free to thecommunity and included members of theCanton Symphony Orchestra providinginstrumental accompaniment. In addition, the Walsh Chamber Singers toured locallyfor several Christmas Concerts that includedOur Lady of Peace Catholic Church inCanton as well as several assisted-livingcommunities. The Stark Community Chorussponsored by Walsh University also gaveChristmas performances at Zion LutheranChurch in downtown Canton. The Music Department at Walsh has alsodeveloped academically with the newaddition of a minor degree program nowavailable to those students whose interestsinclude a more in-depth education in themusical arts. Theodore and Marilyn StultsGivingWith a personal touchWhen Walsh University launched the 50thAnniversary Scholarship Program Theodore(Ted) and Marilyn Stults were among thefirst to become involved. They establishednot just one endowed scholarship, but three. Each endowed scholarship was created toembody their own life pursuits – Nursing,Business and the Arts.It is Walsh’s emphasis on personal relationships, ethics and theology that are among the reasonsthe Stults choose to support Walsh with theirtime and generosity each year.“When we found an opportunity to givein a way that was also very personal to ourown interests, we immediately felt this wassomething we wanted to do,” said Ted.“We were drawn to the fact that we couldactually choose where the money would beused and that we could help those studentswho might not have the funds necessary topursue their own career goals.”Marilyn Stults graduated from the MercySchool of Nursing in 1960 just before theprogram merged with Walsh. She credits theinfluence of her mother, Mary Franz, for herown career path and for her motivation toendow a scholarship for students in nursingat Walsh.“My mother was a 1936 graduate of Mercyherself, and eventually she earned her master’sdegree. She was also a nursing instructorand inspired so many students, includingmyself, to pursue their goals. I think it’sbecause of her that I’ve always had a strongdesire to help other nursing students. Infact, I was very touched to find that themother of our first scholarship recipient wassomeone my mom had taught!”It was Ted Stults's successful career in businessas President of Buckeye Feed Mills, Inc., thatprompted the second endowed scholarship tobe created for students in the MBA program.“I thought carefully about it. Most scholarshipsin business are awarded to undergraduatestudents. There just didn’t seem to be muchout there for those individuals who want tocontinue their education with a master’sdegree. Marilyn and I wanted to help removethat financial obstacle for young professionals.”The third scholarship was something thatthey both felt compelled to create. Ted andMarilyn grew up in Massillon and attendedWashington High School together. Theyofficially met in the Tiger Swing Band butdidn’t begin dating seriously until 6 yearslater. They have a strong connection toMassillon and have continued to supportthe community by their involvement inmany organizations including the MassillonMuseum of Art. When they heard that Walshwas launching a new Museum Studies majorwith Massillon Museum curator and adjunctprofessor Alex Nicholis, they immediatelywanted to see it succeed. “We were excitedto get involved for three reasons,” said Ted.“One, it would help the University. Twoit would help the Massillon Museum, andthree, it would help students.”Their connection to Walsh University beganin the early 1990’s. It was Joseph Soehnlenwho first introduced Ted to Walsh in the early1990s. “He invited me to dinner one nightwith Walsh’s President Father Mucowski.I didn’t know much about Walsh, but Ithought the school sounded interesting,”said Ted. “After that, we just fell in love withWalsh.” Ted has served on Walsh’s AdvisoryBoard for over 17 years, including terms asVice Chairman and Chairman, and currentlyserves on Walsh’s Board of Directors.Marilyn is currently an active member ofthe Walsh University Women's Committee.“I was a 1960 graduate of Purdue Universityand I never met the President of the Universityuntil I walked across the stage for my diploma,”said Ted. “Marilyn and I both feel that Walshsuccessfully blends personal relationships, academia and the moral values that are oftenabsent in today’s higher education.”As Protestants, Ted and Marilyn like thatWalsh is a Catholic institution that is welcomingof all faiths. “We feel that Walsh isinclusive of the world. We are proud to be apart of Walsh’s growth over the past 17 yearsand, knowing that a little can go a long way,we can think of no better investment thanin the students attending Walsh University.”walsh timesinter 2010
