PRIME (Psychology Research Intitiatives Mentorship
Experience) is the summer research program designed for
minority students interested in pursuing careers in
psychobiological sciences. The program is funded through a
grant by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and
administered by the American Psychological Association.
In addition, the Department will be offering PRIME II, a
matching program for all students, regardless of ethnicity or
research interest. PRIME II is made possible by funds provided
by the Provost of the University of Miami.
Students can participate as a Full PRIME or JUMP START
(Just for University of Miami Psychology Students to
Accelerate Research Training). Full PRIME students are
required to produce a research poster at the end of the summer
session. They collect, analyze, and present results on original
data at several conferences during the summer and coming
year. JUMP START students (who have not completed PSY
316) do a literature review, contemplate various hypotheses,
and make a research proposal that will also be presented at the
end of the summer.
Both Full PRIME and JUMP START students work closely
with their mentors, the Director, the graduate student
coordinators Tanya Tran and Katie Chipungu, and other PRIME
students to get the most out of their summer research
experience. If you are interested in PRIME, come by UASP at
Flipse 508 to get more information about next year’s program.
Announcing New PA’s
UASP is pleased to announce the new Peer
Advisors for 2009-2010! Congratulations to
these six students who were picked from a large
pool of qualified students. Please join us in
welcoming them to our team!
Thank you, Test
Takers!
Many thanks to the 40 students who
participated in the assessment of the Psychology
major in April. This was the fifth year for the
assessment exam and will be used along with past
and future test results to assess the Department,
the curriculum, and make plans for future
directions. As a token of our appreciation,
participants received $25 after the exam. This
test was a good sample of the PSY GRE and lets
students see where they stand relative to others.
Look for updates about future testing days.
Thanks again to this year’s volunteers!
Still looking to get involved in
Research?
Labs are still looking for research assistants for both
the summer and fall semesters. See page 3 for a
The Psi Chi Connection
News & Briefs for University of Miami Psi Chi Vol. 10 Num. 5
Thanks to the outgoing
work this past year!
President’s Message
By: Lyndsey Kiss
Hello Everyone!
Psi Chi has had a remarkable year. We are
sad to end such a great time together but are
excited for what lies ahead for all of our
outstanding members. Over the year we have
increased membership attendance, participated in
service events, connected our members with the
research community at UM, informed members of
graduate school opportunities, and hosted a “Hot
Topics” night. Our group has been able to bond and create lasting
professional and personal relationships that will persevere outside the
University setting.
We are proud to announce the induction of 62 new members
into Psi Chi. We congratulate these new inductees on their academic
record and extracurricular accomplishments. By joining the Psi Chi
Honor Society, these new members will have the opportunity to further
develop their career paths through networking events the organization
provides and form a stronger bond with the science of psychology itself.
Psi Chi values integrity, humility, and inquiring minds. Our new
members have demonstrated such qualities of their character. I am
confident they will continue the legacy of excellence Psi Chi strives for.
Following the induction of new members, we also elected a new executive board to lead the chapter for the 2009-2010
academic year. Congratulations to the following members:
• Kendra Anderson—President
• Amelia Rowley — Vice President
• Daniela Ferro — Treasurer
• Daniella Meair — Secretary
• Angelica Ortiz — Public Relations
• Christina Castro — Public Relations
The qualifications and previous leadership experience of these individuals is superior. All of our members should support
their work in the upcoming year and attend ALL meetings. Remember, anyone can attend Psi Chi meetings as an associate
member if they have not been invited to formally join. Attending meetings is advantageous as a full scholarship to any
Kaplan prep test course is given out to the member with
the best attendance at the end of the year.
Thank-you to all who have helped Psi Chi grow
and solidify itself this semester. I myself have become a
better leader and individual serving as the President of Psi
Chi. Best of luck to all of our graduating seniors!
Sincerely,
Lyndsey Kiss
