The Alumni Association has officially
set its roots in the daily offerings on
the campus of Covington Catholic.
The Alumni Center is bustling and I
am pleased to announce that Richard
has been hired as the Director
of Alumni Relations. This new
position shows the commitment that
Covington Catholic has in the newly
formed Alumni Association. This
investment will allow our association
to grow and provide the needed
resources to reconnect alumni with
their alma mater.

Dear alumni,
as the Director of alumni relations, my job is to reach out to alumni and provide the
tools for communication, as well as direct events and activities to invite alumni back to
the campus. The task at hand will have its challenges and will not happen overnight. In
the short time that I have been involved in the development of the alumni association, I
have learned a lot. The most important lesson is that it is very easy to get excited about
Covington Catholic when you have a son here or you volunteer your time as a coach or are
a member of one of the many school committees. The hard part is getting alumni who do
not have an active role in the school to take the time to come back.
We all have very busy lives these days. Finding time to reconnect to your high school is not high on most priority
lists. I would like to challenge each of you to make the commitment to find time to visit the campus one time
this next year. High school sports have always been a source of pride in the northern Kentucky community. What
better way to reconnect with CovCath than to go to a game? There is a buzz about basketball and Coach Krumps is
headed into this spring with 90% of last year’s team. If you cannot make it to a game, we have alumni socials on the
second Wednesday of the month at the alumni center and there are many alumni activities in the planning stages.
alma mater is latin for “nourishing mother.” sometimes when your life is a constant progression forward, it is hard
to look back at the tracks that you have laid. often, in conversations that I have with alums, they share with me about
how they have become more successful or better people because of their four years at Covington Catholic. as any
nourishing mother would, Covington Catholic has given all of us the tools to become leaders in our community and
in our faith. It is for this reason that I ask you to come back and reconnect with Covington Catholic and the Colonel
brotherhood. At CovCath, you are always welcome.

This summer, many alumni rallied to clean
up and remodel the Alumni Center, which
is in the basement level of the Griffin Centre.
The project would not be a success
if not for those alumni and especially the
efforts of the following five Colonels.
A special thank you goes out to:
• Bill Frisch’79, works in the plumbing
division of Century Construction and is
father to Ben ’10 and John ’13.
• Ken Hardcorn ’86, owner and operator
of J & A Interiors, and has two sons attending
CCH Jason ’12 and Alec ’14.
• Barry Brake ’84, father to future Colonels,
Kyle ’17 and Logan ’19, who owns
and operates JF Brake Interiors.
• Nate Thamann ’99, project manager
with Reece-Campbell who would often
bring a group of Thamann alumni.
• Joe Fischer ’78, owner of Jafco Electric
and father to future Colonel Jake ’16.
While there were many contributors,
some in huge ways, these five not only
provided their companies’ services, but
were often found in the trenches night
after night with me until the project was
finished.
Please stop by the Alumni Center to see
the work that has been done to your
Alumni Center. The Center is open after
all home football and basketball games
and for many scheduled socials and
events throughout the year.
On the following page is a full list of
Colonels who helped make this happen.
I would like to apologize if anyone has
been left off of this list. Some evenings
I would go home and crash in lieu of
writing down the names of those who
had shown up that evening.

ecently I watched the video:
“Celebrate What’s right with
the World” by DeWitt Jones.
Throughout the presentation
DeWitt discusses how our
vision controls our perception
and how that perception then
becomes our reality in many facets of our lives. I could
not help but think of how this relates to the vision we
share as an administration, faculty, staff and student
body. Dewitt also focused on the idea of celebrating
the best in people and having a vision of the best
possible future. For this reason I have chosen the theme
“Celebrate” for the principal’s message in this issue of
the alumni journal.
Where do we look for something to celebrate? We have
a multitude of examples right here at CovCath. I have
to look no further than our students to see the good in
them, the good they produce, and the good that is still
yet to be achieved. We celebrate their successes, which
instill them with optimism, confidence and fulfillment.

experience. Whether it is the Chamber Choir helping
to create a scholarship in maria schaffstein’s name,

“Colonels in the Community” is a new addition to the journal. This section will be
dedicated to the countless volunteer hours that alumni donate to the community. This
is also where you can send in an article about a fellow alum who you feel should be
recognized for his contributions in the community.

over the years the student body at Covington Catholic has put in hundreds of thousands
of community service hours. each year the student body exceeds their total annual goal
due to individuals who give of themselves unselfishly. Those who reach or exceed the
standard of giving receive a varsity letter for service. at Covington Catholic, community service is a part of everyday life.

Alum Shows School Pride
earlier this year Covington Catholic acquired a
school bus through the generosity of the athletic
Boosters association. The school needed the
bus to transport students to athletic events and
extracurricular activities. The bus, however, needed
upgrades.
athletic Director mike guidugli immediately
thought of mark Knipper, who had helped
previously with some work on the other busses, in
addition to assisting with several other projects to
enhance the campus.
mark, a 1980 alum, said that he was happy to be
part of the project and he encouraged others to
participate. “I know a lot of people and am willing
to ask them for help.” mark actually called in
many favors, allowing the bus to be completely
refurbished at no additional cost to CCH. His
friends installed leD lights and supplied the bus
with a top quality stereo system and surround
sound.
mark borrowed the body shop of another friend,
and putting to work his amateur skills at body work,
he completely overhauled the exterior of the bus.
mark was quick to add, “This was a project that my whole family got involved in. We are Colonels through and through.”
mark’s sons, nikolaus ’13 and Benjamin ’06, were his primary co-workers. sons mark III and luke, future Colonels classes
of ’18 and ’22, were also enthusiastic participants in the project.

50th reunion
The Class of 1961 gathered recently,
incredulous that it had really been
fifty years since they graduated
from CCH. on september 16,
2011, 75 of the 122 class members
made it back to see old friends and
note significant changes to campus.
on Friday evening, a mass was
held for the deceased members of
the class, followed by a reception
in the school cafeteria. Father
Heitzman, a beloved priest who was
on staff at CCH in 1961, presided.
on saturday the golden Colonels
attended the school football game
and then headed over to the taste
of Cincinnati riverboat Dinner
Cruise.
The Class of 1961 gathers annually
for a cookout and is noted for its
particular sense of brotherhood and
tradition. Class member Dick maile
explained, “I know I’m biased but

there is just something unique about
the all-male educational experience.
It creates a spirit that you can’t match
elsewhere. I also think we have a
really special class. We get together
to remember our deceased members,
especially tim shields, and we’ve
set up three scholarships that give
significantly to the school.”
In thinking back on why the class
has maintained strong friendships,
mr. maile reflected, “We grew up in
a different time. our parents lived
through the great Depression and we
knew what it was like to work hard
and discipline ourselves. I worked in
the summer to pay my tuition ($120),
which was significant at the time. We
also went on to become the vietnam
generation. shortly after we finished
high school we started seeing our
friends come home in body bags.” one
class member, Dave stoppelwerth,
lost his life in the vietnam War. Dave
is remembered at Covington Catholic
each year through an english award in
his name.
When these men, now nearly seventy
years old, completed high school, the
united states was in great turmoil.

nuclear threats were highlighted
through the Bay of pigs Invasion.
Freedom riders headed south,
agitating for changes in racial
discrimination and segregation
policies. Here in northern
Kentucky, Covington Catholic
graduated men who would become
leaders of this changing world. The
school, then in the “new building,”
(built in 1954) was staffed primarily
by marianist priests and Brothers.
today the school has changed
significantly, adding women faculty
members and a lay administration,
a new facility, and cutting-edge
technology. However, with men
like the Class of 1961 serving as the
foundation on which Covington
Catholic was built, CCH continues
to produce leaders for greater
Cincinnati and the world.
Class of ’98 responds with record giving
If you keep up with class giving from year to year, you probably noticed that this year the Class of ’98 rose to the top,
seemingly from nowhere. general wisdom on giving tells us that donors who are at the top of their earning potential will be
our highest givers, and when it comes to top donations by amount, that is true. However, when looking to the percentage
of donors by class, ’98 won by a landslide. These grads, in their early thirties, have young children and are just getting
established in their careers. However, motivated by the persuasion of one of their classmates, Chad summe, they really rose
to the challenge. Chad began emailing and personally contacting each class member in January of 2011, and continued until
the end of the appeal. He let his class members know that tuition alone does not cover the operating expenses of the school.
He reminded them of the good times they had when they were Colonels, and let them know that, with alumni support,

To Whom It May Concern:
On Friday 10/7/11 my husband and I
were at Frisch’s in Fort Wright. That
day your students had their special
walk. Frisch’s was filled with [CCH]
students. I just want you to know you
have raised all your students right, to be
gentlemen, kind, courteous, and special.
I was there for over an hour and a half.
They were never loud or out of hand.
They ate, left tips and kept their tables
neat when done. When ready to leave
they sang their fight song, which left a
smile on my face and tears in my eyes,
remembering being young once. I was so
proud to be there.

Like Son
We apologize for omitting Jim Meyers and his
son Zach from the summer journal “Like Father,
Like Son” section. Jim is a ’98 grad and Zach is a
freshman this year.

In the spring of 2010, the community of park Hills and
surrounding northern Kentucky neighborhoods were
devastated by the death of 17 year-old maria schaffstein, a
notre Dame academy senior. In response to the tragedy, the
Covington Catholic chamber choir was moved to record a
memorial CD entitled “to Where You are.” This CD was met
with unprecedented enthusiasm from many in the community
looking for something good to come out of the tragedy. to date,
the album has sold nearly 1000 copies and has raised $10,000.00.
The funds from this CD have enabled Covington Catholic to establish the maria schaffstein
memorial scholarship. maria’s parents, John and eileen, attended an all-school mass on
september 22, 2011, to formally announce the establishment of the scholarship. mr. and
mrs. schaffstein also expressed their ongoing gratitude to the community for reaching out in
honor of their daughter.
The success of “to Where You are” will ensure that generations of Covington Catholic
students will remember maria.

1960 Ken shields, who led
Highlands to five ninth region
championships and northern
Kentucky university to two
nCaa Division II runner-up
finishes, held camps over the
summer for boys and girls in
grades 1-12 at sports of all sorts
in union.
1971 Thomas more College, along
with presenting sponsor pnC
Bank, honored Andrew J.
Vonlehman at the 16th annual
Bishop Hughes awards Dinner at
Drees pavilion on sept. 29, 2011.
vonlehman was honored for his
involvement in Catholic higher
education.
1972 Terry Boehmker was featured
in a recent edition of “The
northerner,” nKu’s newspaper.
He reflected on his prolific career
in local journalism, including
serving as sports editor for the
Kentucky post for 28 years.
1976 Jim Berger, co-owner of Bilz
insurance in Covington, was
named to the Kenton County
airport Board.
1977 Don Mcnay authored a new
book, “Wealth Without Wall
street: a main street guide to
making money.”
1978 Dr. Paul Tenkotte, professor of
history and department chair at
northern Kentucky university,
gave a brief history of how
the st. elizabeth Hospital was
established at a presentation
on october 7 of a “Historical
marker” at the site in Covington.
1979 David schulte biked 439 miles
in october to raise money for
injured marines.
1998 on august 11, over 58 runners
met for the annual cross country
run in Devou park. 30 alumni,
25 current students and several
supporters enjoyed 80 degree
weather for the race. as a team,
the alumni bested the student
team. Brian Marshall won with
a time of 18:24. For full results,

1980 Greg Moser was inducted into
the northern Kentucky soccer
Hall of Fame.
1981 Mike McKeown with was
recognized as an “outstanding
alumnus” at the annual alumni
awards banquet at northern
Kentucky university for his
contributions to the university
as an adjunct professor, as well
as serving as an active advisory
board president.
1982 Rick shumate was named the
head basketball coach of south
Dearborn High school.
1984 Chris Moriconi serves as mayor
of Independence. He was recently
featured in nKY magazine,
explaining his plans for managing
growth and attracting business.
1989 Matthew scheben married
elizabeth tsvetkoff from Canfield,
ohio in January of 2011. They
reside in new albany, ohio.
1991 Father Matthew summe recently
spoke at Blessed sacrament
school and was featured in an
article in the messenger. as a
former student at the school, he
spoke with the 2nd and 5th grade
classes, presided over an allschool
mass, as well as at sunday
parish masses. ordained in
rome in 2007, Father is currently
bringing others to Christ and
promoting vocations in Brazil.
1992 Matt Berger was named to the
university of louisville sports
Hall of Fame.
1994 Allen Kohlhepp is based in
sausalito, California and working
for the brand naming company
lexicon. The company was
recently featured in “The new
Yorker” magazine for its unique
approach to branding, including
naming the “Blackberry” device.
John Gardiner has been
contracted to play tommy Devito
on the national tour of “Jersey
Boys.”
1995 Pat o’Donnell can be seen
on “Design star” as a guest
carpenter. The show can be
viewed on Hgtv and on-line.
1998 lt. John hiltz was named to
the prestigious navy flight
demonstration squadron, The
Blue angels.
1999 Mike Mauntel and his wife,
emily, are currently in the process
of adopting a child from the
Democratic republic of Congo.

scott Gamm writes “my wife
Christian and I had a baby girl
october 12, 2011. Her name is
Claire elizabeth. she was 6 lbs 11
oz and 19.5 inches long. everyone

2000 Patrick Rice (in photo below)was
named “employee of the Year”
at Wms, a lottery and gaming
manufacturing company that
employs nearly 1,800 people. He
is also engaged to be married in
December.

2002 sean Ryan is in the us army and
is stationed in Ft. Benning, ga.
He has been promoted to the
rank of Captain.
nick lonneman writes in that he
is the proud father of son William
nicholas. Congratulations!
2004 Matt Ryan is in the us army and
is stationed in Ft. Bragg, nC. He
has been promoted to the rank of
Captain.
Matt Deacon recently graduated
from eKu with a masters Degree
in occupational Therapy. He
is employed by st. elizabeth
medical group.
Tom Awadalla recently moved
his financial advisory practice

Kenwood.
2006 Kyle Benzinger writes: “I
am in Thailand on a research
fellowship through Xavier
university studying economic
development. It has been
quite the experience thus far
and I am looking forward to
visiting villages and Buddhist
communities at the end of the
month.”
2007 eric Meier (in photo) was one of
49 athletes to be
named a Cleveland
golf/srixon
all-america
scholar by the
golf Coaches
association of
america.
2011 Troy Timmerman suited up
for his 1st game at the air Force
academy in early october vs.
san Diego state . as of midterm
troy had posted a 3.5 gpa.

Reunion Updates
1956: The Class of ’56 celebrated their
55th reunion the weekend of september
23rd with golf on Friday and dinner
that evening at a local restaurant. on
saturday, september 24th, they had
cocktails and dinner at Fort mitchell
Country Club.
1961: The golden Colonels celebrated
their 50th reunion the weekend of
september 16th. Friday evening
festivities began with mass followed by
a reception in the school cafeteria. on
saturday they attended the football game
and then headed over to the taste of
Cincinnati riverboat Dinner Cruise.
1971: andy vonlehman and Bill
Holocher chaired the reunion committee
for the Class of ’71. They went to turfway
park Friday night and attended the game
and cookout at reunion Weekend.
1976: For their 35th reunion they
attended the reunion Weekend events at
the school on september 17, 2011.
1981: The Class of ’81 attended
the reunion Weekend. They had a stag on
the 16th, attended the football game on
saturday, and had a barbeque on the 17th.
1986: The Class of ’86 gathered on the
weekend of october 21-22 to celebrate
their 25th reunion. events included
a golf outing at twin oaks on Friday
and a football game on saturday. Dave
schroeder writes “The highlight of the
reunion was dinner in the new griffin
Centre and a tour of the school. It was
amazing to see the progress in the new
alumni center. What a great facility to
meet with old friends. even though
there is much more work to be done,
this building has wonderful potential to
bring alumni from across the generations

together. The pool table, televisions and
seating areas made for a great place to tell
old stories and catch up with classmates.”
1991: 20th class reunion celebration!
They attended the football game on
september 17th against Beechwood.
on october 15th they went to Keeneland.
Thanks to Jim Danneman for organizing.
1996: Jeff moffitt and John Bain cochaired
the 15th reunion. They
attended the football game at CCH on
september 17th followed by the cookout
at the griffin Centre. They then headed
over to the Holy grail Bar for drinks
before attending the reds game and
taking in the action from the triple play
party suite.
2001: nick D’andrea chaired the 10th
reunion. They went to Keeneland october
15th. upon returning to Covington, they
continued their celebrations in main
strausse. on october 16th they met for
golf at Devou.
2006: The Class of ’06 celebrated by
attending the football game on saturday,
september 17th when the Colonels took
on the Beechwood tigers. an
informal trip to Keeneland took place on
october 15th.

Walking down the front hall of the main academic
building, you may notice that the chapel doors
have new stained glass windows. This feature was
an original specification when the building was
constructed in 2003. However, because of budget
cuts, the windows were eliminated from the plans.
tim Haders, CCH art teacher, always lamented that
the windows were unable to be included. When his
brother William Haders passed away suddenly from
cancer in 2007, he asked that memorials be sent
to the school. Funds were also raised through the
William Haders memorial Wiffle Ball tournament.
as donations poured in, tim felt that the windows
would be a significant way to remember William.
shortly after mr. Haders’ death, CovCath lost another
important member of our extended family. mr. gene
eckerle passed away in march of 2008. a father of
four graduates, tom ’84, Kevin ’88, andy ’91 and
matt ’96, gene helped start the Christian awakening
retreat program at Covington Catholic. He led it
for many years, and eventually passed leadership
onto his son tom, currently a CCH science teacher
and baseball coach. gene was a man of deep faith
who mentored many CovCath students in their own
faith journeys. gene’s memorials were also given to
CovCath, and his son tom asked that they fund the
stained glass windows as well.
The windows, pictured, were installed in september
of 2011. Thank you to the Haders and eckerle
families for allowing us to remember their loved ones
in this special way.
