While sitting in a funeral
mass for the mother of
an alumnus, it occurred
to me that there were a
large number of Covington
Catholic alumni in attendance. The Colonel community
is never more pronounced than when one of our
brothers is in need. In such instances, our collective
compassion comes to the forefront to offer support and
to underscore the notion that our brotherhood, while
made up of a collection of individuals, is one entity.
The support we give one another causes our neighbors
to look up to our Colonel community. We are respected
and we should take this admiration as a compliment,
but also as a challenge to make a difference-- the type of
difference our parents and the parents of current CCH
students have made by investing in a Covington Catholic
experience.
Covington Catholic has come a long way since I walked
the halls as a student. Huge strides have been made
in creating the total package. academics, athletics,
facilities, community service and overall pride have been
taken to a new level. While these changes have been
substantial, the mission of our alma mater has not been
forgotten. each year Covington Catholic’s fiscal budget
has its challenges, but it is always focused on providing
a superior and affordable educational experience for our
young men. Covington Catholic strives to never turn
any young man away because of his inability to pay the
cost of tuition.
While my position as Director of alumni relations is
focused on building relationships with and supporting
alumni, I find that the success of my work is directly
reflected in the annual appeal results. The annual
appeal is a fund-raising mechanism that targets alumni
to help meet the needs of Covington Catholic’s annual
budget that tuition is unable to cover. our goal is to
A Message From The Director of Alumni Relations
Richard Dickmann
use the annual appeal funds to improve the school by
making purchases for educational enhancements or any
campus improvements. Currently though, the majority
of the appeal dollars are allocated to subsidize our
tuition assistance program. last year alone, 60% of the
annual appeal dollars were utilized for this program. In
keeping with our mission, one out of every eight students
was able to attend Covington Catholic with assistance
from You, our alumni. I was a recipient of the tuition
assistance program in the late 1970’s and I can assure
you that it makes a difference in the lives of these young
men. I thank those alumni that came before me for the
opportunity to be a part of this brotherhood. I ask you to
join me in fulfilling this aspect of our legacy.
In closing, I would like to reflect back to the warm
feelings that I experienced during that funeral mass.
as a member of the Colonel Community, I am proud
of our unified faith and compassion for each other,
and I continue to move forward in making our alumni
association a network of men working as one for the
betterment of the Covington Catholic experience and the
community in which we live.
Alumni Socials
alumni socials are held on the second
Wednesday of the month in the alumni
Center at 7pm. This alumni activity is open
to all alumni. Theses socials are a way to
reconnect with classmates, and to establish
new relationships within the community of our
Colonel brothers. our bond is deeply rooted
and these alumni socials are a staple in the
alumni association’s movement to bring all
alumni back. please bring a classmate and join
us each month for these socials.
Did you know that the 500
students that stand together
as our present student body
represent 45 different grade
schools? They have made
informed decisions and have
sought out what we provide at
Covington Catholic, thereby becoming part of a brotherhood
and a legacy of over 8,500 alumni. These remarkable
facts motivate me to reflect on what causes students from
throughout the greater Cincinnati area to seek us out.
Certainly our superior Catholic identity and community
service programs play major roles in the decision making
process, as do our high academic standards, excellent athletic
programs, and the 42 different clubs/activities that we offer.
one of our academic components that certainly continues to
attract young men to our learning community is our fine arts
program. This department, made up of visual and performing
arts, has established itself as one of the best fine arts programs
in the tri-state, a testament that can be confirmed by both
our current students and our alumni. under the direction
of mr. tim Haders, fine arts department chairperson and
the sole teacher of visual arts for the last twenty-five plus
years, many CCH visual art students have earned prestigious
awards and college scholarships, ultimately entering careers
that have allowed them to utilize the lessons learned in his
classroom. any student that has taken one of mr. Haders’
classes can attest that he is an individual who wears many hats
as a teacher, counselor, and role model. He influences current
students on a daily basis and he is visited regularly by alums
home on break seeking advice. This influence also extends
to many art classrooms throughout the area, many of which
contain teachers that discovered their initial passion for art
in mr. Haders’ classes. one such example is current graphic
Design and Computer aided Design teacher and CovCath
alum Craig Cleveland ’83, who cites mr. Haders as a major
influence on his career path. not coincidentally, mr. Haders
was vital in the creation and implementation of the courses
Craig now teaches at CCH.
also included in our fine arts program is a strong performing
arts segment, consisting of band, chorus and drama. The band
component is made up of both middle school and high school
students and includes a jazz ensemble, concert band, and a
pep band, all orchestrated by greg Cerimele. This ensemble
A MessAge FroM The PrinciPAl
of hard working young men and women play at a variety of
sporting events and social functions for both CCH and nDa.
each year the band continues to grow and improve on its
previous successes.
our chorus and chamber choir also continue to make news for
the outstanding work they produce under the direction of Jim
Wolfe. our chamber choir’s performances are not only staples
at CCH and nDa, but are also common throughout greater
Cincinnati. They recently won the Warm 98 Christmas Carol
competition and as a result, had their version of “I’ll Be Home
for Christmas” played repeatedly over the airwaves as well
as winning a new piano. They have released their third CD
in as many years, which was unveiled on February 26 at our
annual spaghetti dinner. The chamber choir was also recently
featured on Cet’s (Cincinnati public television) Cincinnati
High notes, a production that highlights outstanding high
school choirs from our area.
not to be outdone, our drama program, which works in
concert with nDa, maintains its excellent reputation by
producing four theatrical performances throughout the school
year under the direction of alene mosko. although incredibly
demanding, actors from both schools regularly produce highly
skilled theatrical performances that are well-received and
well-attended by members of our learning communities. It
is through this drama opportunity that our students receive
exposure to acting, production, set design, lights and music
that often provide career paths.
our entire faculty goes above and beyond the call of duty on
a daily basis enriching the lives of our student body. In this
article, featuring the merits of our Fine arts Department,
we have merely scratched the surface of all of the wonderful
things being accomplished here at your alma mater. as
principal, I not only have responsibility for, but the privilege
of observing our teachers interacting with young men, be
it tutoring prior to or following classes, collaborating with
guidance counselors or colleagues, designing lesson plans
geared to multiple ways of learning, providing feedback to
our young men, or just being there for them, while making
a difference in their lives. We are indeed blessed to have
instructors who take pride in their work, skilled as well
as passionate in developing young men with outstanding
character. It is the dedication of our faculty and staff that help
transition our boys into men.

on Friday, January 6th, the alumni of Covington
Catholic High school held a reception after the
home basketball game vs. Beechwood in the school’s
griffin alumni Centre. The event celebrated and
paid tribute to fellow alum, former teacher and
coach Dan tieman ’58. a display was unveiled
to honor “Coach t” for his dedication to the
Covington Catholic community. turnout for this
event was 240 people, making it the largest event
yet to be hosted by the Covington Catholic alumni
association.
Dan started coaching at Covington Catholic in
1978. From 1978 to 1985 he coached freshman
football and Jv baseball until becoming the head
basketball coach in 1985. During his time as head
basketball coach, Coach t became “the winningest
coach” in CCH history. In 1992, mr. tieman was
named “nKY Coach of the Year” after winning the
region. upon retiring as head basketball coach, mr.
tieman offered this advice to coaches: “patience and
saturday, november 5th, immediately following
the CovCath vs rowan County playoff game,
fans were welcomed to a reception in the griffin
alumni Centre to honor Carl J. “Doc” Brueggeman,
Class of ’49. “Doc” and his family were in alumni
Hall for a special dedication in his honor for all
of the years that he has given to the Covington
Catholic community.
member of the school Board, sCore Committee,
CCH Hall of Fame, and Development Committee,
and team doctor are just some roles that Dr.
Brueggemann has undertaken as a member of
the CovCath community since graduating over
sixty years ago. “Doc Brueggs”, as all Colonels
know him, was the first “alumni legend” to have a
display erected in the alumni Hall in his honor.
The tribute displays to Coach Tieman and Doc Brueggmann
were designed by alumni director Richard Dickmann. The
following volunteers built the displays: Randy Ellison ’79, Rich
Heidrich ’80, Joe Melching ’83, Dan Melching ’90, Joe Fischer ’78,
Todd Nienaber ’86 and Ken Hardcorn ’86.
Craig ClevelanD
since coming on staff two years ago, professional
graphic designer and CCH alum Craig Cleveland
’87 has not only established the graphic design
curriculum at CCH, but he has also exposed
students to real world work.
perhaps the most compelling example of Craig’s
success is the partnership with local company
“tung toos,” which sells candy tongue tattoos
aimed at adolescents and teenagers. to sell this
unique product, they have enlisted the partnership
of CCH graphic design students. students created
designs from sketches, then submitted the designs
to the company owner and received feedback.
approximately ten students had their work selected
for professional
use. These
students
eventually
produced final
art in adobe
Illustrator
and lead
designers were
compensated for
their work.
Craig reports
that CCH
designs have
been getting
great reactions at
trade shows. The
products will be
sold worldwide at Walmart and rite aid locations.
The product was also recently featured on “The
today show” with Kathy lee gifford.
CCH graphic design students have also had the
privilege of expanding their classroom learning
through a field trip to great american Ballpark. The
focus of the trip was the role of graphic design in the
“reds” franchise. While touring the ballpark, mr.
Cleveland and his classes experienced creativity on
a ‘major-league level.’ They were given a private tour
of the Cincinnati reds Hall of Fame and ballpark
where they were treated to the sights and sounds of
the oldest professional baseball franchise. The topics
of discussion during the field trip included aspects of
signage, logos and fan communication.
Craig has been able to expose students to a variety
of real-life design scenarios because he also has a
thriving career in the industry. For eight years he
worked for gibson greetings, he was the original
designer for “silly slammers,” and he owns his own
graphic design firm, “Design Drive-in”. The past six
years he has been working at Hosea in the afternoons
as their head designer/ art director/ creative guru.
Craig credits his interest in illustration and design
to his years as a student at CCH. He was particularly
influenced by mr. Haders and his passion for art. He
also developed deep friendships with many of his
classmates and he continues to be involved with the
Class of ’87.
We’re proud that alums like Craig have chosen to
serve our students with their professional skills.
Attention Alums:
We are looking for old yearbooks and CCH
memorabilia for alumni Hall in the griffin Centre.
with us. Call richard Dickmann to arrange
forth exceptional effort by selling over 90 chances for
the raffle! With only 4 tickets between them, the school
decided to reward BOTH boys with new iPad 2’s!
Congratulations to sophomore Max Boyle and junior
Bryson White!
Thanks to everyone who participated in this school
fundraiser and a special thank you to parent Betsy
Weber who established and organized this important
fundraiser! The real winners are the students who will
benefit from the $31,000 infusion of new technology
into the school’s language lab and additional classroom
technology.
week of hard work, cold showers, and the chance to see
the Holy spirit in action at two different facilities run by
the mustard seed Communities.
The first, Blessed assurance, cares for young children
and unwed pregnant women who have been abandoned
on the streets. The second location, Jacob’s ladder,
cares for adult men and women with special needs
ranging from cerebral palsy to Down’s syndrome
to schizophrenia. The group spent most of its
time working at a laundry facility at Jacob’s ladder
performing manual labor such as carpentry, tile work,
painting, installing water and sewer lines, and mapping
the existing utility lines on the property. They also
had a chance to visit with the residents and to witness
firsthand the love and dignity with which the caregivers
tend to the residents.
CCH Choir Shines
our chamber choir has received much good press and
publicity over the last year. In December, the choir won
a new piano for the school in a Warm 98 online contest.
The choir entered the song “I’ll be Home for Christmas”
and won the contest with the most number of votes on the
Warm 98 website. For their efforts, the chamber choir
won a piano that was provided by Henderson music Com-
more importantly, they had a chance to grow
spiritually through daily mass, rosary, and time
spent reflecting on the lessons learned at the end
of each tiring day. They all agreed that the chance
to be “the hands of Christ” for their less fortunate
brothers and sisters was the greatest gift of all.
members of the CovCath family who made the
journey included John Quast ’75, father of adam
’01, steve gongola ’69, greg Hiltz ’02, Bob Hoffer,
father of
eric ’01, Kevin ’04 and Jordan ’11, Dan Hiltz,
father of John’98, Jimi’99 and greg’02, and mike
maier, father of John ’04. other members of the
team were scott menkhaus, Jim Klosterman,
father of Daniel ’13, glen taylor, and Fr. Jacob
varghese, parochial vicar of st. timothy’s parish.
For more information, including how you can join
a future trip, please contact any of these men.
pany and they had their version of the song played extensively
during the Christmas season.
In January, the chamber choir was featured on the Cet
arts program “Cincinnati High notes”, a television show
that features local choirs. The segment was filmed at st.
mary’s Church in alexandria and aired on Cet on January
29th at 8:30 p.m.
The choir released a new CD on February 26 entitled “The
road I travel.” This CD will include songs recorded with
the 2011-2012 Chamber choir, songs with the current choir
and a few with the choral group from nDa. song titles
