Finger Lakes InstrumentationIntroductionFLI produces cooled low-noise CCD cameras for astronomy, spectroscopy & biologicalapplications. We have been manufacturing premium CCD cameras and accessories since 1995. Ourgoal is to produce the finest CCD cameras and accessories available at reasonable prices. Customersatisfaction is our number one priority.FLI CamerasBoth the MaxCam and IMG cameras are designed to use several types of CCDs that include: Fullframe front-illuminated, full frame back-illuminated, and interline sensors. (Depending upon thesensor size and type, various sensor defect classifications are available.) Regardless of which sensoris used, every FLI camera delivers uncompromised performance and image quality.Available Sensors: KODAK E2V Fairchild Imaging SITeThe MaxCam imagers are small form-factor, cost effective imaging solutions that employ researchgrade sensors from Kodak and E2V. The IMG series utilize large array sensors (up to 16 megapixel)and state of the art electronics for low noise, high cooled operation. Back-Illuminatedresearch grade sensors from SITE, E2V and Fairchild Imaging are available. Front-illuminated andinterline sensors from Kodak are available.Advanced design, vigorous testing, unmatched cooling performance, high quality machinedconstruction and superior electronics guarantee long life and excellent performanceMonochrome and Colour SensorsMonochrome sensors are generallyemployed due to their wide spectral range(200nm-1100nm) and high quantumefficiencies (up to 93%).High quality colour images can beobtained in conjunction with the FLI’sfilter wheels and digital focusers.FLI also employs “single shot” coloursensors.M101: © John C. Smith - IMG6303E & CFW-7Sensor CoolingAll FLI cameras incorporate fan-assisted 2and 3 stage TEC cooling that reduces thetemperature of the sensor up to 40 o C(MaxCam) and 60 o C (IMG) belowambient. While water-cooling is available on allcameras as standard, it is generally notrequired to reach the desired operatingtemperatures. Due to our camera’s soliddesign and use of advanced thermaltransfer compounds and implementationtechniques, they do not suffer from

“thermal runaway” nor require special cooling techniques or precautionary measures. We areconstantly searching for improvements in materials and thermal interfaces.Camera WindowsAll camera windows are multicoated to preserve the sensor’s important quantum efficiency (anuncoated window will have a loss of ~ 4% per side, giving an average transmission of only92.16%.) The average transmission of an FLI camera window is between 99% and 99.7%. Quartz, fused silica and custom ultra-high tolerance windows are available.Sensor Cover SlipsSensor cover slips introduce the doublethreat of internal reflections and reducedoverall camera QE. The QE lost due to acover slip is dependant upon the coverslip's material but ANY digital imagingsystem using a sensor with a cover slipwill suffer QE losses that an identicalimaging system without a cover slip willnot. More significantly, a cover slipintroduces aberrations into your image thatsoftware cannot remove. Sensors withoutcover slips are installed at our laboratoryat no extra cost.IC434 & B33: © Richard Crisp – IMG1024SSensor CoatingsSensor coatings to enhance the CCD’s performance are available. Quantum Efficiency can risedramatically to 93% under certain wavelengths to reveal additional detail and reduce exposuretimes resulting to images of exceptional quality. Options include Ultra-violet (UVAR), multi-bandand broadband coatings.Software ControlFLI cameras come complete with controlsoftware and support Windows andLinux. A Windows/Linux developersSDK is also available as are a series oflibraries for interfacing FLI devicesthrough MATLAB; a package withrobust tools for mathematicalcomputation, analysis, visualization, andalgorithm development.AccessoriesFLI has earned an excellent reputationfor its high quality accessories includingthe Precision Digital Focuser andFilter Wheels. FLI also supplies a rangeof scientific grade filters and adaptors.FIG 1: E2V CCD47-10 sensor Quantum EfficiencyOrdering your CameraA large number of combinations of camera bodies, sensors, coatings and cover slips are available tobuild a camera that will best suit your requirements. IMG Research Grade CCD CameraThe IMG represents FLI’s flagship imaging product and comes with a range of sensors from Kodak,E2V, SITe and Fairchild Imaging with resolutions of up to 16 Megapixels and QuantumEfficiencies (QE) of up to 93% at 600nm and a spectral range of 200nm to 1100nm. QE is themeasure of how effective an imager is at producing an electronic charge from incoming light. Thisis particularly important for low light sources and faint objects.IMGXNGC 7923: © Richard Crisp – IMG6303ESpecial sensor coatings can be employed that will increase the sensor’s QE at certain ranges to bestsuit customer applications. Midband, broadband and UV coatings are available from E2V. Tofurther ensure the highest QE, all IMG camera Windows have 12 layers of Super Multicoating (6layers per side) that produce an average transmission of 99.7%! (An uncoated window will have aloss of approximately 4% per side, giving an average transmission of only 92.16%)The IMG benefits from 2 or 3 stage TEC cooling that can decrease sensor temperature by 50 - 60 o Cbelow ambient. Along with superior electronics and implementation methods, our cameras are headand shoulders below the competition when it comes to noise. (Note: FLI cameras will reach andmaintain low CCD temperatures without special cooling procedures or fear of thermal runaway.)All FLI cameras have water cooling provision. A network of small water channels are machinedinto each camera baseplate which allow water to flow directly under the Peltier cooler. While thesepassages do not effect normal camera operations, they are available if water-cooling is desired.Simply attach tubing to access ports, supply water flow and your CCD camera is water cooled! Each complete IMG and MaxCam imager comes with:• Camera body with built in tripod mount• Thermo-electrical cooling• Stainless steel shutterso Field replaceableo Location outside of the sensor chamber - will never drop material onto your CCD!• High quality scientific grade sensor• Camera power supply• USB interface & cable• Multi-Platform camera control software includedo Runs under Windows and Linux, System independento JAVA GUI, MATALAB & Maxim DL/CCD support• CD-ROM with images, installation instructions and software• One Year Warranty on Parts and Labor

MAXCAM Scientific Grade ImagerThe MaxCam range employs the latest sensor technology from Kodak and E2V. Kodak sensorsemploy a microlens array and special MAR protective cover slip, this results to peak quantumefficiencies of 83%. Equally the E2V sensors offer a variety of coatings delivering highly efficientimagers over wide spectral ranges at peak quantum efficiencies of 93%.MAXCAMM42: © Ron Wodaski – CM10-MEAll MaxCam and IMG cameras are compatible with all FLI accessories including the FLI CFWColour Filter Wheels and the redesigned FLI Digital Focusers. The MaxCam benefits from 2 stageTEC cooling that will decrease sensor temperature by 40 o C. (Noise is reduced by half for every 6 o Cof temperature drop.) Reducing noise is vital for low light imaging or detecting faint objects. FLIcameras attain specified temperature drops unlike competitors’ cameras that fall well belowadvertised specifications. All FLI cameras have water cooling available. A network of small water channels are machined intoeach MaxCam baseplate which allow water to flow directly under the Peltier cooler.
