DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL, RAIPURFINAL SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT, 2012-13CLASS-IV SUBJECT-ENGLISH Marks: 70Q.I. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:(M-1x8=8)Elephants on the coast of Thailand are acting strange. They stamp their feet and motion towards the hills. The sea draws back from the beaches. Fish flop in the mud. Suddenly, a huge wave appears. This is noordinary wave. It is a tsunami!Tsunami (pronounced “soo-NAH-mee”) waves are larger and faster than normal surface waves. A tsunamiwave can travel as fast as a jet plane and can be as tall as a ten-story building. Imagine dropping a stoneinto a pond. The water on the surface ripples. A tsunami is like a very powerful ripple. Tsunamis begin whenthe ocean rises or falls very suddenly. Large amount of seawater is displaced. This movement causes hugewaves. For a tsunami to occur, there must be some kind of force that causes the ocean water to become displaced. Most tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes. However, volcanoes, landslides, large icebergs, andeven meteorites are capable of causing one of these mighty waves.Tsunamis are extremely powerful. Ordinary waves lose power when they break. Tsunami waves can remainpowerful for several days. Because tsunami waves are so strong, they can kill people, damage property, and completely ruin an ecosystem in just one hour.Scientists have no way of predicting when a tsunami will hit. However, if a powerful enough earthquakeoccurs, scientists can issue a warning or a watch. A warning means that a tsunami will very likely hit soon. Awatch means that conditions are favourable for a tsunami. When people are notified about a watch or awarning, they have more time to prepare. It is best to get alert when a tsunami is on the way!Q1) Why are the elephants on the coast of Thailand acting strange?Q2) What is required for a tsunami to occur?Q3) What is the speed of a tsunami wave?Q4) How long does a tsunami take to completely ruin our ecosystem?Q5) When can the scientists issue a warning or a watch?Q6) How does the notification of a warning or a watch help the people?Q7) Find the word in the passage which means “small bubbles formed on water”. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:(M-1x7=7)Where does chocolate come from? Believe it or not, it grows on trees. Not as a sweet chocolate candy barwrapped in foil, but as a cocoa bean. These cocoa beans grow on a cacao tree, which is found in tropical areas such as Central and SouthAmerica. The fruit of these trees are called pods, and they are long and hard. Inside the pods is a soft, whitepulp that surrounds the thirty or so seeds. These seeds are what we call cocoa beans. They are very hardand bitter to taste. To make chocolate, people start by carefully taking the beans out of the pods, still covered in the white pulp, and leaving them in a bucket. The bucket is often covered with banana leaves and left anywhere from a fewdays to a few weeks. This process is called fermenting. Then the beans are left to dry in the sun.Fermenting and drying the beans makes them less bitter. Then the beans are shipped to a factory to beturned into chocolate. At the factory, beans are roasted in ovens to bring out their flavour. After roasting, the outer covering of thebean is removed. The inner bean is then crushed to form a paste known as chocolate liquor. From this paste, people can either make cocoa powder or the chocolate we buy in stores. To make cocoapowder, the paste is crushed and pressed repeatedly to remove the fat, leaving behind only a dry, groundpowder. To make chocolate, people need to add other ingredients to the paste such as milk, sugar, and

cocoa butter. They then mix and heat the concoction several times to create a substance we wouldrecognize as chocolate. It may even have fruit, nuts, or candy added to it before it is moulded into a shape.Considering all that must happen to turn a bitter cocoa bean into a chocolate bar, a dollar seems like a smallprice to pay for such a delicious sweet treat.Q1) To make chocolate, what is the first thing people must do to the cocoa beans?Q2) According to the passage, which ingredients are needed to add to the paste to make the chocolatethat is available in stores?Q3) What are the fruits of cacao trees called?Q4) How do the cocoa beans taste?Q5) Fill in the blank-Beans are roasted in the oven to bring out their __________.Q6) Find the word in the passage which means “to give a shape”.(Refer line 18)Q7) From the passage find the word opposite in meaning –sweet-____________(Refer line 6)Q1.Write a paragraph on “ A visit to Science Park”:-(M-1x5=5)OrWrite a diary entry about your “New Year’s Celebration.”Q2.Write an application to the principal requesting him to organize an excursion from school to an icecreamfactory, where you can learn how different types of ice-creams are made.(M-1x5=5)OrWrite a letter to your book store in-charge, requesting him to replace your English Book which was damagedwhen you received it.Q3.
