<strong>2009</strong> OutlookThe <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Indiana</strong> women’s soccer teamhopes to follow an offensive explosion to success in the<strong>2009</strong> season.USI Head Coach Krissy Engelbrecht enters her seventhseason with a team loaded with 13 returning players thatinclude 96 percent of last year’s offensiveproduction. The ScreamingEagles also have nine new playersthat add depth to both the offensiveand defensive side of the field.FORWARDS:Up front the Eagles have five returningplayers, led by third team All-GLVC sophomore Meagan Kempf.Kempf led the team and tied for10th in the GLVC with 19 points ona team-best eight goals and threeassists. She also scored the gamewinninggoal in three of the five USIvictories a year ago.Kempf is joined up front by sophomoreNancy Newcomer, whostarted 11 of her 16 matches duringher first season with the Eagles.Newcomer finished the year withnine points on four goals and oneassist, including the game winninggoal against Oakland City <strong>University</strong>.The Eagles also return seniors RachelCaksackkar, Jenna Kuesch, and KatieTeagarden. Teagarden tied for first on the team with fourassists a year ago, while scoring one goal to finish the yearwith six total points. Caksackkar, who has played multiplepositions during her Eagle career, had one assist in 2008.To add depth to the offensive side of the field, Engelbrechtand USI have added three new players – freshmen CheyenneBracken, Kelly Fitzgerald, and Susan Ellsperman-- for <strong>2009</strong>.2008 All-GLVC sophomore forwardMeagan KempfBracken joins the Eagles following four seasons on theWarren Central High School soccer team. She was secondteam All-State last fall in addition to being named <strong>Indiana</strong>polisStar All-County. She helped lead CHS to regional,sectional, and city championships in 2007 and 2008 andwas a member of the CHS state championship team in2007.Ellsperman, who lettered in soccer andtrack at Memorial High School, was afirst team All-State selection and theEvansville Player of the Year in 2008.The forward/midfielder also receivedNSCAA All-Region honors last fall afterposting 68 points on 22 goals and 24assists.MIDFIELDERSThe Eagles have a solid pair of returningseniors in Shauni Boudia andKara Georgeff to anchor the midfield.Boudia was second on the team lastfall with 12 points, tying for first withfour assists and second with fourgoals.Georgeff battled back from a kneeinjury during her sophomore season tostart all 17 matches as a junior. Shealso was fourth on the team in scoringwith a career-high seven points on twogoals and three assists.The Eagles are supplementing themidfield corps with sophomore transferHaley Hancock and freshman PaigeNuelle. Hancock comes to the Eagle program from the <strong>University</strong>of Evansville, where she started her collegiate careerwith the Purple Aces.Nuelle comes to USI after winning three letters in basketballand soccer at Kirkwood High School. The 2008 first teamAll-Conference performer helped KHS to a Missouri statechampionship in 2006 and to three straight Midwest RegionalLeague titles.DEFENDERS:The Eagles are young on the defensive side of the field withfour returning defenders and five freshmen.Leading the returning players is senior sweeper AlisonConquest. Conquest started all 17 matches for the Eagles


<strong>2009</strong> Outlookin <strong>2009</strong> and also added to the USI offense by recordingthree points on one goal and one assist.Also returning in the USI backfield are sophomores CarrieGrochowski and Samantha Smith. Growchowski alsohelped out on the offensive side with three points of herown on one goal and one assist.The Eagles also plan to add speed to the backfield whenthey switch sophomore Lavonia Lewis from forward todefender. Lewis tied for seventh in scoring as a freshmanwith three points on one goal and one assist.New to the defensive side aree freshmen Morgyn Graber,Brittany McCall, and Jessica Gates.McCall was a four-time All-City and All-SIAC defender atMemorial. She also was named All-District as a junior in2007 and Academic All-City all four seasons.Gates was a 2008 third team All-State performer from LakeCentral High School. Head Coach Krissy EngelbrechtKrissy Engelbrecht is entering her seventh season as thehead coach of the USI women’s soccer program. In herfirst six seasons, Engelbrecht has accumulated a recordof 37-63-5 overall.Engelbrecht also led the 2005 Eagles to their first GLVCTournament appearance since 2000.Engelbrecht came to USI from the <strong>University</strong> of Evansvillewhere she was an assistant coach. Under formerEvansville head coach Mick Lyon, Engelbrecht helpeddirect the Aces to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in 2001.In the community, she is the director of player development for the Blitz/LadyBlitz soccer organization.Engelbrecht was an outstanding player for Evansville prior to becoming a coach.She was a three-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and All-Great Lakes Region team member, leading the Aces to four straight MVC titlesand two NCAA Division I Tournament appearances. USI Coaching StaffKara SergesketterAssistant CoachKara Sergesketter ‘07 makesher debut as a member of the USIwomen’s soccer coaching staff in<strong>2009</strong>, assisting Head Coach KrissyEngelbrecht.Sergesketter joins the USI staff withcoaching experience at the club andjunior high school level. She has coached the EvansvilleLady Blitz (2004-05), the Evansville Elite (2006-07), andCastle Junior High School (2007-08), in addition to beingemployed as personal trainer at Bob’s Gym.Sergesketter played four seasons with the Screaming Eaglesbefore joining the coaching ranks and was a secondgeneration USI student athlete, following in her mother’s(Patty Marcum) footsteps. She played in 66 matches forthe Eagles, making 46 starts, while recording 15 points onthree goals and nine assists.The Evansville, <strong>Indiana</strong>, native and graduate of Reitz HighSchool earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in2007. She and her husband Dustin reside in Newburgh,<strong>Indiana</strong>.Owen McCarthyAssistant CoachOwen McCarthy begins his firstseason at USI as an assistantcoach for the women’s soccerteam. He began his collegiatecoaching career last season as amen’s soccer student assistant.McCarthy holds a USSF “D” coachinglicense after directing the southern <strong>Indiana</strong> districtteam to the Olympic Development Program. A formerassistant at Memorial High School (Evansville, <strong>Indiana</strong>),he is a member of the Evansville Soccer Club coachingstaff.Prior to beginning his collegiate coaching career lastyear, McCarthy was a cadet at the United State MilitaryAcademy and was a member of Army’s Division I soccerteam in 2004-05. His collegiate soccer career was cutshort after his freshman season due to injury.McCarthy was a starting midfielder at the U.S. MilitaryAcademy Preparatory School (Mt. Monmouth, New Jersey)and spent a semester in residence training at theIMG Soccer Academy.A Memorial High School graduate, McCarthy was a fouryearmember of the varsity soccer team and was a partof the Tigers’ 2002 IHSAA soccer championship.
