a small group of dedicated community members opened the university hills Christian nursing home on May 7, 1972. They started with just $2000 in the bank, but what they lacked in funding they made up for in determination and love. hard work, a lot of prayer, good will from others and of course the grace of god – these are the things that made it all possible. We recently sat down with some of our founders and organizational leaders simply asking them to tell us their thoughts on ClC in the early days, today and their hopes for a bright future. Our MissiOn “Christian Living Communities ministers to senior adults through a continuum of services and care that reflects Christian love, respect and compassion and that enriches the quality and dignity of life for each individual.” 3 The Beginnings Foundation for the Future “it wasn’t rosey at all. What can you do with $2000, even back then, 40 years ago, not much. So there was some struggling ...it was good that bethesda came on board ...it all worked out well, never had doubts ...a lot of prayer went into it. god led it all the way, without him it probably wouldn’t be here today.” – Earl Lammers, the liaison between the Bethesda and University Hills Christian Nursing Home Association, former board member. “We would go and sweep the floors so it would be clean for the next day, and when the windows got put in, we went and washed the windows and when the furniture was brought over that had been stored in a barn, we washed all the furniture down – so it was just exciting. We could see the progress we were making. They were such good memories.” – Mary Ham original volunteer, wife of Rod Ham (deceased) who served on the original board. Both Rod and Mary faithfully served and continue to serve CLC. “every day had new opportunities and new obligations. We had to see who we could insult today, who we could consult tomorrow. it was kind of fun as well bringing on the sweat, a few tears sometimes, but we seemed to be blessed with success.” – Elmer Houtsma, original nursing home administrator and current Clermont Park resident. “it was his vision to provide for the elderly ...he knew older people don’t like to be put on the shelf.” – Dottie Jeltma, original volunteer, resident at The Village and wife Don Jeltma (deceased), the contractor for the first building (he built it at cost). We’re working on one now that will be 74 apartments and it will be beautiful ...if that is the last project, who knows?” – Earl Lammers The Future “i think things are in good hands and i think they will, and i hope they will, and i am confident they will, stay that way to be successful.” – Elmer Houtsma “two words: Christian Community – i really believe that.” – Meindert Bosch “our mission is reaching a much broader number of people than we ever anticipated and what we are finding is when those people become acquainted with Christian living Communities or become residents and involved they are impressed with the type of care, the Christian care we are able to render to them.” – Frank Velzen, former Bethesda board member, integral in negotiating the land purchase of 1975, current Holly Creek resident and Stewardship Fund board member. “i hope they never lose the feeling of love – so often we would have people come into u-hills and say – you know there is just this feeling here, my mother just has to come here – i want that feeling to always be there. never ever lose that feeling –and it was a feeling of love.” – Mary Ham Planning 1968 BOard Of directOrs george a. anema Walter bohnet henry brandsma don a.
