Dear Friends,In your hands is Fleisher’s 2009 Annual Report, a summary of activities and accomplishments for the period July2008 through June 2009. As we write this, it is hard to fathom that such a whirlwind of activity took place in just oneyear! We started last summer, for example, with not one but three major projects that focused on introspection andassessment. Our 2009–2012 strategic planning process, supported by the Nonprofit Finance Fund, The PhiladelphiaFoundation and The Pew Center for Arts and Heritage through the Philadelphia Cultural Management Initiative, is aroadmap for Fleisher’s future. A graphic rejuvenation project and perception study funded by the Trustees PhilanthropyFund of the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund helped us articulate Fleisher’s value to our different audiences and resulted ina beautiful new logo. And audience research, for which we worked with the Chicago-based firm Slover Linett Strategiesas part of a multiyear strategy to expand our audience, made possible by the Wallace Foundation, is resulting in veryimportant information about the needs of our current and prospective students.Staff and board were fortunate that so many generous supporters madeit possible for us to dedicate time, consult with experts, and focus ourthinking on what makes Fleisher special and how we can do our workbetter. Our learning has already informed important changes. In March,we restructured our education department, promoting Magda Martinez,who previously directed our Community Partnerships in the Arts program,to Director of Arts Education and Community Engagement. Above, you see our new brand mark. In some ways, it is inspired by the rose window thatgraces the Sanctuary. Still, its meaning and message go beyond that. It represents the act of art-making, while alsosignifying light and creative energy. Further, it represents the creativity that is present both within the individual andradiating throughout the communities we serve.Our new tagline, “art begins within,” establishes a general position for Fleisher and sets the tone for our organization.It references the creative potential within each person while encouraging each individual to experience Fleisher inhis or her own unique way. While it suggests space, it is not directly referencing anything physical. Yes, art is withinthe building. It hangs on the walls, lives in the galleries, and through our classes and workshops is created within thespace. But the tagline also invites introspection and expression and further reinforces Samuel S.
