Dear Fleisher Exhibition & Art Sale
On Sunday, November 4, Fleisher will hold its biennial event Dear Fleisher, 4 x 6
Inches of Art, an invitational exhibition and sale of original, postcard-sized works of art.
Hundreds of artists submit 4 x 6 inch works in a variety of media and styles, each of
which is exhibited anonymously and sold on a first-come, first-served basis for $50.
Artists sign their names on the back of each card, so that the viewers and buyers will
be drawn to works based on their aesthetic resonance with the piece. As this is an
event intended for everyone in the Fleisher community, and in keeping with Fleisher’s
value of accessibility, the $50 price tag makes it possible for a wide audience to
acquire an original piece of art.
All proceeds from Dear Fleisher support Fleisher’s national-award-winning art education
programs and exhibitions. Since its inaugural exhibition in 2004, Dear Fleisher
has featured over 2,000 works by 800 artists, and raised more than $150,000 for
Fleisher’s programs.
Fleisher Celebrates
the 35th Anniversary
of the Wind Challenge
Exhibition Series
The 2012–2013 season marks the 35th
anniversary of Fleisher’s acclaimed Wind
Challenge Exhibition Series, the region’s
premier juried exhibition program. Nine
artists will be featured in three sixweek,
three-person exhibitions, with
the freedom to show any new or recent body of work. The Wind Challenge Exhibition
Series introduces regional contemporary art to a broad audience, and helps emerging
artists advance their professional careers. In addition to the exhibition, Fleisher will
continue to offer a series of free artist-led public programs including lectures, gallery
discussions, and visits by students from Fleisher’s on-site classes and its communitybased
programs in public schools and social service agencies.
The Wind Challenge Exhibition Series has featured new works by more than 300
regional artists in a variety of media. Past Wind Challenge artists include photographer
Robert Asman and sculptor Syd Carpenter, both of whom were later awarded a
Pew Fellowship in the Arts; beloved Fleisher teaching artist Charlotte Yudis; and
brothers Billy and Stephen Dufala, winners of the 2009 West Prize. The 2012–2013
Wind Challenge Exhibition Series opens September 14 and features work from
artists Micah Danges, Julianna Foster, Bill Gerhard, Elizabeth Hamilton, Jake Kehs,
Ryan Kelly, Erin Murray, Tim Portlock, and Bohyun Yoon. Learn more about all of the
current and previous Wind Challenge artists by visiting the Catalogue of Challenge
Artists on www.fleisher.org.
Programs at the Fleisher Art Memorial are made possible in part thanks to the support of our local, state, and national partners.

Fleisher Spotlight:
Carolina Hooper
What does art mean to you?
The definition of art is so broad: I hardly know how to
explain what it is and how it affects me. Art has been
a part of my whole life, because art is all around us,
within us.
When did you start taking classes at Fleisher?
In middle school I could not take art because playing The 2012 Ella King Torrey Young Artist Prize
Winner, Carolina Hooper, 16 (center), with (left to
in the orchestra had taken up my extra elective. I right) Russell Torrey, Lucy Hooper, Bruce Hooper,
wanted to continue art during that time, and Fleisher and Ella Russell Torrey
turned out to be a great opportunity. My love for art has
only grown during the time I have attended Fleisher.
I have learned a considerable amount from the various classes here.
What have you studied at Fleisher?
Fleisher has allowed me to try media I had never touched before. I have studied printmaking,
art foundations, and sculpture. I also took botanical illustration, which was eye-opening for
me. In this class I learned how to portray organic objects such as flowers and potatoes using
colored pencils, a medium I never thought I could use in this way. Colored pencils were what
I colored with in elementary school, and I thought that would be the end of them; however,
through this class, I learned how beautiful and refined the layering of the colors could become.
What inspires you to create art?
I am compelled to continue making my artwork because I want to produce something of beauty.
I want to draw an ordinary object and make it something to wonder at. I want to put an emotion
down on paper that others can feel as well just from looking at it. I can truly appreciate what
I draw, paint, sculpt, or photograph because doing so allows me to explore the subject and
render it in my own way.
How do you approach your artwork?
I am never wholly satisfied with my artwork. I know that in a month or two, I will study it, shake
my head, and wish I had worked on it more or done something differently. Nevertheless, I feel
that the process is important, and I learn from every piece of art I attempt.
How will you stay involved in art after you finish high school?
I want to continue to grow as an artist throughout my life by producing and refining my own
artwork as well as learning from critiques and other artists’ works. I plan to pursue art in
college, and I am seriously considering art as a career. I cannot imagine ever leaving art
behind.
The Ella King Torrey Young Artist Prize was established by Ella Russell Torrey in 2008 in memory
of her daughter. An award of $1,000 is given to one young artist each year to support his or her
continued development in the arts and increase exposure to opportunities in the arts.
