Fleisher Spotlight:
Carolina Hooper
What does art mean to you?
The definition of art is so broad: I hardly know how to
explain what it is and how it affects me. Art has been
a part of my whole life, because art is all around us,
within us.
When did you start taking classes at Fleisher?
In middle school I could not take art because playing The 2012 Ella King Torrey Young Artist Prize
Winner, Carolina Hooper, 16 (center), with (left to
in the orchestra had taken up my extra elective. I right) Russell Torrey, Lucy Hooper, Bruce Hooper,
wanted to continue art during that time, and Fleisher and Ella Russell Torrey
turned out to be a great opportunity. My love for art has
only grown during the time I have attended Fleisher.
I have learned a considerable amount from the various classes here.
What have you studied at Fleisher?
Fleisher has allowed me to try media I had never touched before. I have studied printmaking,
art foundations, and sculpture. I also took botanical illustration, which was eye-opening for
me. In this class I learned how to portray organic objects such as flowers and potatoes using
colored pencils, a medium I never thought I could use in this way. Colored pencils were what
I colored with in elementary school, and I thought that would be the end of them; however,
through this class, I learned how beautiful and refined the layering of the colors could become.
What inspires you to create art?
I am compelled to continue making my artwork because I want to produce something of beauty.
I want to draw an ordinary object and make it something to wonder at. I want to put an emotion
down on paper that others can feel as well just from looking at it. I can truly appreciate what
I draw, paint, sculpt, or photograph because doing so allows me to explore the subject and
render it in my own way.
How do you approach your artwork?
I am never wholly satisfied with my artwork. I know that in a month or two, I will study it, shake
my head, and wish I had worked on it more or done something differently. Nevertheless, I feel
that the process is important, and I learn from every piece of art I attempt.
How will you stay involved in art after you finish high school?
I want to continue to grow as an artist throughout my life by producing and refining my own
artwork as well as learning from critiques and other artists’ works. I plan to pursue art in
college, and I am seriously considering art as a career. I cannot imagine ever leaving art
behind.
The Ella King Torrey Young Artist Prize was established by Ella Russell Torrey in 2008 in memory
of her daughter. An award of $1,000 is given to one young artist each year to support his or her
continued development in the arts and increase exposure to opportunities in the arts.
