Ina modern car interior you will find springsin the centre console, glove box, cupholders, grab handles, sun visors and door mechanisms,the design of which has to take into account factors astactility and strength, available space and operationallife. With so many options available, many car interiormanufacturers are using the total design serviceavailable from William Hughes to engineer individualsprings that provide the most cost-effective solution foreach application.Torsion springs provide a perfect solution for manyautomotive applications. They can be either single,which gives a higher force in a smaller space, or double,which provides a balanced force or torque. To overcomefriction springs can be coated with special materials orthe spring geometry can be optimised to minimise theeffect. Other options include tension or compressionsprings in a range of sizes and materials.In modern vehicles, each part of the car interiorneeds to impart the right ‘feel’ to the driver. So when thedesign engineers at William Hughes were asked todevelop a special torsion spring to release anarmrest catch on a central console,ergonomics were the primary consideration.The catch mechanism had to be designed toslow the movement of the console to makeit open gently. It also needed to be easy tooperate with minimal effort.The team at William Hughes was provided with acomplete set of parameters for the operation. The designengineer needed to fully understand every aspect of theapplication to ensure that the proposed design would beboth economical and fully compatible with the plasticsand fabrics also used in the assembly. The designerneeded to consider how the unit could be assembledquickly and easily.With the help of the latest computer aided designsoftware and specialised spring data, William Hughesused their knowledge and experience to develop a springthat was optimised for the application. In this instance asingle torsion spring provided the best solution andWilliam Hughes was able to quickly produce prototypesprings for evaluation before the design was finalised forvolume production. Quality systems to AS 9100, ISO9001:2000 and ISO/TS 16949:2002 ensuredconsistency and accuracy while William Hughes’investment in the latest CNC machines and qualityprocedures meant that continuity of supply was assured.In addition to special springs for car interiors, WilliamHughes can also supply a wide range of bent wire formsand sub assemblies for car seats and trim panels. Seatframes are welded or clipped together and supplied ascomplete pre-assembled units.
