3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION3.1. Rais<strong>in</strong>g of seedl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> nurseryIt was observed that flower<strong>in</strong>g and fruit<strong>in</strong>g was a regular phenomenon <strong>in</strong><strong>rattan</strong> and every year a mature female <strong>rattan</strong> plant produced enormousquantity of fruits (Fig. 3). In species likeC. hookerianus flower<strong>in</strong>g and fruit<strong>in</strong>goccurred even twice a year; dur<strong>in</strong>g April -May and September - November. Maturityof the fruits could be ensured by thegolden yellow colour atta<strong>in</strong>ed while stillrema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g attached to the mother plant.As <strong>in</strong> the case of any other forest trees,seeds should be collected from mature<strong>rattan</strong> plants. Usually the fruit<strong>in</strong>g branchis cut and the fruits are separated out.The fruit/seed characteristic features likefruit weight/seed weight etc has beengiven <strong>in</strong> Table 2.Fig. 3.
