Summary of Breakout Sessions
and the Panel Discussion *
Dr. Armin Pfoh Michel Potvin Prof. Liu Minghui
During the afternoon two parallel breakout sessions took place, and the conference
concluded with a résumé of the sessions and a panel discussion. During
the breakout sessions strategies and international collaboration within
the automotive and electrotechnical industries were discussed in greater
detail. In each session speakers from China, France and Germany presented
their current activities.
Breakout Session I –
Outlook of the automotive industry
This session was moderated by Dr. Armin Pfoh, Vice President of Corporate
Innovation Management of TÜV SÜD AG, who, in his welcome address and
introduction, again stressed the need for cooperation across all sectors and
technologies, which will result in the formation of completely new partnerships.
This work will require new practical benchmarks and standards.
Renault Towards E-mobility
Michel Potvin, Deputy Director Public Affairs at Renault is actively engaged
in standardization activities. He began by describing the driving forces behind
Renault‘s e-mobility strategy, clearly stating that industry will be developing
numerous solutions that will be in competition with one another. The
standardization of certain aspects is nevertheless necessary for removing
technical barriers and achieving global market acceptance. <strong>International</strong>
standards must therefore also be implemented at national level. Furthermore,
references to standards in legislation can reduce the need for stringent
regulations. An efficient organization and a clear definition of tasks within
and between ISO, IEC and other institutions are prerequisites for obtaining
common, well-coordinated solutions. Mr. Potvin sees a continuous coordination
between product development and the standardization process as being
particularly important. Standards must of course ensure the users‘ safety,
while at the same time paving the way for innovations.
Development and Challenge of Electrical Vehicles in China
Prof. Liu Minghui, Director of the Electric Vehicle Department at FAW Co‘s
R&D Center presented the R&D activities within China and FAW Co, the
resulting strategies and technology roadmaps, and the goals to be reached.
Most Chinese companies are still at the R&D stage in terms of electromobility.
FAW places great value on bringing together in-house competencies in
the key technologies while always maintaining a system approach. So far
the majority of Chinese standards work has taken place at national level, this
being the best way to take into account the specific needs and current state
of technological development in China. However, a need is seen for closer
collaborations with and active participation in international standards organizations,
and this is one of China‘s goals for the future.
