EDUCATIONAL AIMSAn increase in the world population and industrialization has likely brought seriousenvironmental problems, speeding up global warming and increasing coastal disasters.Although the situation of the environmental issues may differ locally, some disasterscaused by climate change can be observed in coastal areas. During this Summer School,attending students will recognize the similarities and differences on the environmentalissues that each country experiences. From the cruise in Hiroshima Bay and fieldobservation at Takehara beach, attendants will learn how to find and evaluate theeffects of climate change and coastal disasters on the environment/ecosystems.Academic experts and guest speakers will provide hints on how to manage a variety ofcurrent environmental issues related to climate change and coastal disasters.The educational aims of the Summer School are shown below:1. To know the similarities and differences in local environmental issues related toclimate change and coastal disaster, through their presentation of country case studyreports and discussion.2. To learn how they are tackling the local environmental issues regarding to climatechange and coastal disaster in Japan.3. To be given lectures on management of environmental risk due to climate changeand coastal disaster by experts from around the world.4. To expose students to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony and to promotereflection on the importance of such events in world affairs.5. To provide a venue for master’s students from INU institutions to develop contactsand networks around the world with the aim of promoting future collaborativeresearch and other activities.Students who successfully complete the Summer School will be able to:Describe the similarities and differences on the environmental issues amongdifferent regions in the world.Contribute to solve the environmental issues in each home country.Commit themselves on a policy making process regarding environmental issuesin each home country.3
