ASSIGNMENTS AND PREPARATIONS FOR THE COURSE1. Paper assignment – writing a paper and discussionStudents will have to write a well-researched and carefully organized case studycountry report being relevant to the theme of the course, “Preparing for Global Changeand Coastal Disasters” in your country (refer to the report guidelines for more details).All reports should be grounded in the relevant theoretical research associated with thetheme, and we expect students to include statistics issued by the central/localgovernments in your country. All students are required to present their researchreports and will receive feedback from the faculty and their peers in an educationalconference session by email.*The deadline to submit the assignment to Dr. Ione Madinabeitia from the GraduateSchool of Biosphere Science, Hiroshima University (Japan) is June 15, 2013. E-mail:imadinab@hiroshima-u.ac.jpPrior to the conference session, we expect students to read the papers prepared by allthe other students enrolled in the course. At least one student will be assigned to serveas a discussant for 2 other students’ paper, providing feedback and comments.2. ReadingsStudents must complete all required readings before the beginning of the course.During the course, students will be very busy engaging in a variety of structured andunstructured activities. Therefore, it is essential that they do so before the coursecommences.3. PresentationDuring the second day of the course at Hiroshima University, students will present theircase study country reports which have to be peer-reviewed and revised beforehand byemail. Students may prepare their own presentations before coming to Japan usingPowerPoint.4
