DHL IN THE COMMUNITY<br />

Focus on Food Retail<br />

In this edition of Our World we are focusing on the Food Retail<br />

division, with an active community liaison team led by Dean Wyatt.<br />

Dean will tell you more.....<br />

Corporate Social Responsibility<br />

<strong>Community</strong> Liaison Officer,<br />

David White, made contact<br />

with Haydon Wick Parish<br />

Council (which is close to the<br />

Morrisons store in Swindon) to<br />

ask them whether they could<br />

identify any suitable people<br />

and those interested were<br />

sent invitations.<br />

The Parish Council provided<br />

transport to bring the group<br />

on site and they arrived at<br />

1.45pm. Colleen Hickey<br />

(Health and Safety Manager)<br />

gave a short health and safety<br />

brief and issued them all with<br />

hi–viz vests.<br />

“About 12 months ago I picked up the<br />

responsibility for community involvement<br />

within Food Retail and, with the help<br />

of Jenny Hesketh, HR Projects Manager,<br />

set up a steering group with a<br />

representative from each of our accounts<br />

- Sainsburys, Morrisons, Boots, Iceland,<br />

JD Weatherspoon, Nisa Today’s and BP.<br />

That team became our <strong>Community</strong> Liaison<br />

Officers, who work extremely hard, with<br />

the site teams, to promote community<br />

involvement in their sites. We now hold<br />

bi monthly meetings to focus on<br />

fundraising and community involvement,<br />

along with sharing experiences.<br />

Swindon Morrisons<br />

On 11 March 2009, a group of Old Age Pensioners, from<br />

the local community, were invited to the Swindon Morrisons<br />

RDC for a short tour of the site and for afternoon tea.<br />

Morrisons RDC.<br />

“Hello, I’m Dean Wyatt, Business Unit Director and<br />

Head of Business Development for Food Retail.<br />

Kenny Anderson (Warehouse<br />

Manager) spoke to them about<br />

how long the warehouse has<br />

been in operation, the stores<br />

that we service and facts<br />

and figures about the<br />

number of stock movements.<br />

We then took the group<br />

into the warehouse to see<br />

it in operation.<br />

They were amazed at just how<br />

large the warehouse was and<br />

impressed by the reach truck<br />

demonstration, especially when<br />

it brought a pallet down from<br />

the very top of the racking.<br />

We walked all the way up<br />

“Food Retail sites have participated in all<br />

sorts of fundraising events, raising over<br />

£100,000; have trained thousands of<br />

children through the Trucks & Child<br />

Safety programme and lots of individuals<br />

at our sites volunteer their time<br />

to support local charities.<br />

“Thanks everyone for all their<br />

hard work and effort over the last<br />

12 months, and I really do believe<br />

that we are making a difference<br />

both on site and in our local<br />

communities – well done and have<br />

a look on these pages as to what<br />

we’ve been up to recently!”<br />

We accompanied the group<br />

upstairs for tea and cakes<br />

and to give them an<br />

opportunity to ask more<br />

questions about the operation<br />

and for a general chat.<br />

The group really enjoyed their<br />

afternoon on our site and<br />

have suggested that a group<br />

of staff may like to visit their<br />

community group to give<br />

a talk about working here.<br />

Morrisons<br />

Droitwich<br />

busy in the<br />

community<br />

The Morrisons depot at Droitwich<br />

are very busy with a range of<br />

activities to get involved in their<br />

local community in 2009.<br />

Over the May Day Bank holiday<br />

weekend, they ran a weekend of<br />

fun based around the history of<br />

transport, with a huge number<br />

of transport based groups will be<br />

showing cars, bikes, lorries in all<br />

different classes and lots of other<br />

fun and games<br />

They also have plans in 2009 to –<br />

Bag pack at 4 local different<br />

Morrison’s stores<br />

Hold football competitions<br />

for adults and for children<br />

• Hold a cricket competition<br />

• and much more!<br />

All monies raised will be divided<br />

between ‘Magges’, a drop in centre<br />

What a<br />

relief!<br />

The team raised £861.00 for Comic Relief<br />

at the Sainsbury DC at Langlands Park.<br />

This was a fantastic achievement and<br />

the senior team would like to thank all<br />

colleagues who helped raise this money,<br />

with a special thanks to Robyn<br />

O’Donnell who raised £570.00 for<br />

holding a sponsored silence.<br />

who organised a pool competition<br />

and Kenny McKinnon<br />

Terry Frew and<br />

Caroline Ritchie<br />

for selling red<br />

noses and<br />

raffle tickets.<br />

for the homeless and ‘Challengers’,<br />

a small group for adults with<br />

learning difficulties.<br />

But the main focus is the Mercians.<br />

The site is ‘adopting’ 30 squaddies<br />

from AVA Platoon, who are part<br />

of the Mercian’s. They decided to<br />

support their local regiment who<br />

are now deployed in Afghanistan.<br />

They are writing, e-mailing and<br />

sending out shoe boxes full of<br />

goodies to show the Platoon<br />

that they are supported whilst in<br />

action. They are mainly all locals<br />

to Worcester and are led by a<br />

sergeant who lives within 15 miles<br />

of the depot.<br />

Sounds like a busy year in Droitwich!<br />
