DHL IN THE COMMUNITY
Focus on Food Retail
In this edition of Our World we are focusing on the Food Retail
division, with an active community liaison team led by Dean Wyatt.
Dean will tell you more.....
Corporate Social Responsibility
Community Liaison Officer,
David White, made contact
with Haydon Wick Parish
Council (which is close to the
Morrisons store in Swindon) to
ask them whether they could
identify any suitable people
and those interested were
sent invitations.
The Parish Council provided
transport to bring the group
on site and they arrived at
1.45pm. Colleen Hickey
(Health and Safety Manager)
gave a short health and safety
brief and issued them all with
hi–viz vests.
“About 12 months ago I picked up the
responsibility for community involvement
within Food Retail and, with the help
of Jenny Hesketh, HR Projects Manager,
set up a steering group with a
representative from each of our accounts
- Sainsburys, Morrisons, Boots, Iceland,
JD Weatherspoon, Nisa Today’s and BP.
That team became our Community Liaison
Officers, who work extremely hard, with
the site teams, to promote community
involvement in their sites. We now hold
bi monthly meetings to focus on
fundraising and community involvement,
along with sharing experiences.
Swindon Morrisons
On 11 March 2009, a group of Old Age Pensioners, from
the local community, were invited to the Swindon Morrisons
RDC for a short tour of the site and for afternoon tea.
A brief talk to the group
who visited Swindon
Morrisons RDC.
“Hello, I’m Dean Wyatt, Business Unit Director and
Head of Business Development for Food Retail.
Kenny Anderson (Warehouse
Manager) spoke to them about
how long the warehouse has
been in operation, the stores
that we service and facts
and figures about the
number of stock movements.
We then took the group
into the warehouse to see
it in operation.
They were amazed at just how
large the warehouse was and
impressed by the reach truck
demonstration, especially when
it brought a pallet down from
the very top of the racking.
We walked all the way up
“Food Retail sites have participated in all
sorts of fundraising events, raising over
£100,000; have trained thousands of
children through the Trucks & Child
Safety programme and lots of individuals
at our sites volunteer their time
to support local charities.
“Thanks everyone for all their
hard work and effort over the last
12 months, and I really do believe
that we are making a difference
both on site and in our local
communities – well done and have
a look on these pages as to what
we’ve been up to recently!”
the warehouse and explained
to them how the products
reached their Morrisons
store in Haydon Wick.
We accompanied the group
upstairs for tea and cakes
and to give them an
opportunity to ask more
questions about the operation
and for a general chat.
The group really enjoyed their
afternoon on our site and
have suggested that a group
of staff may like to visit their
community group to give
a talk about working here.
Morrisons
Droitwich
busy in the
community
The Morrisons depot at Droitwich
are very busy with a range of
activities to get involved in their
local community in 2009.
Over the May Day Bank holiday
weekend, they ran a weekend of
fun based around the history of
transport, with a huge number
of transport based groups will be
showing cars, bikes, lorries in all
different classes and lots of other
fun and games
They also have plans in 2009 to –
•
•
Bag pack at 4 local different
Morrison’s stores
Hold football competitions
for adults and for children
• Hold a cricket competition
• and much more!
All monies raised will be divided
between ‘Magges’, a drop in centre
What a
relief!
The team raised £861.00 for Comic Relief
at the Sainsbury DC at Langlands Park.
This was a fantastic achievement and
the senior team would like to thank all
colleagues who helped raise this money,
with a special thanks to Robyn
O’Donnell who raised £570.00 for
holding a sponsored silence.
Thank You also to Garry Stewart,
who organised a pool competition
and Kenny McKinnon
Terry Frew and
Caroline Ritchie
for selling red
noses and
raffle tickets.
for the homeless and ‘Challengers’,
a small group for adults with
learning difficulties.
But the main focus is the Mercians.
The site is ‘adopting’ 30 squaddies
from AVA Platoon, who are part
of the Mercian’s. They decided to
support their local regiment who
are now deployed in Afghanistan.
They are writing, e-mailing and
sending out shoe boxes full of
goodies to show the Platoon
that they are supported whilst in
action. They are mainly all locals
to Worcester and are led by a
sergeant who lives within 15 miles
of the depot.
Sounds like a busy year in Droitwich!
