OUR W RLD DHL UK Foundation Environment DHL in the Community DHL Life Cycle HOME Previous Next OUR BUSINESS TEAMS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Understanding the tonnes of carbon being generated from gas, electricity and diesel in our warehousing operations, together with our usage of diesel and bio-diesel in our transport operations, was our first step. With our carbon footprint now established, our focus has turned to reducing our emissions. Strategies being applied within Healthcare include the presence of an Eco Ambassador on each site who trains all of our colleagues in energy reduction both in the home and work. The aim of the Programme, which has been designed for Industrial, is to provide drive, focus and support to contracts, reduce environmental impact across all operating areas and so meet or surpass our CO 2 reduction targets. All contracts now possess active 2009 Carbon Emission Reduction Plans which cover all areas of the Programme; Transportation, Property (Office and Warehouse), Green Travel and Employee Engagement. During 2008, as the group launched the GoGreen programme, Healthcare joined the rest of our global DHL colleagues, to commence on a journey of understanding. trimming of our lighting systems coupled with motion and ambient light sensing, through to new state of the art LED lighting at Lutterworth. Our transport teams are working with the central Engineering team, to implement a series of programmes to reduce carbon emissions from our fleet, coupled with enhanced driver training. Aside from carbon reduction, Healthcare has also focussed on another area of environmental impact - waste management. Last year we surpassed our target to Industrial’s Environmental Improvement Programme As our corporate GoGreen programme reaches its first anniversary since its launch in April 2008, we hear from the UK Industrial Sector and how they have developed their own customized Environmental Improvement Programme which aligns with the GoGreen priorities and carbon efficiency targets. recycle 60% of all our waste generated. This means that what would have ended up in land fill was recycled instead. Our target is 70% for 2009 and we hope that by reviewing and consolidating the recycling process we will achieve this. GoGreen has driven a really positive culture change in Healthcare, helping us protect the environment, save money for our customers and engage our employees. The purpose of these resources is to maintain momentum, allow Environmental Champions to engage and educate staff and enable contracts to track their progress and trends throughout 2009 against their 2008 baseline, on a month by month basis. In order to support and guide, the Programme has joined hands with our Process Improvement Advisors, Driver Instructor team and Fleet Management department to ensure that the excellent work performed by these central support functions compliment and enhance each other. OUR W RLD DHL UK Foundation Environment DHL in the Community DHL Life Cycle HOME Previous Next Miles Per Gallon OUR BUSINESS TEAMS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Carbon reduction plans within the transport fleet 10.00 With more than 80% of our regional carbon footprint, attributed to our transport fleet, the central engineering team are heavily focussed on supporting the sectors in reducing their transport related carbon. Jim York who heads up fleet carbon reduction within the UK fleet department, explains: ‘To help the UK meet its carbon efficiency target, the Engineering Operations Managers (EOM), are working closely with the sectors, to identify carbon reduction opportunities within their transport fleet, and help them implement initiatives. We are also able to consider the impact these initiatives will have, which will flag whether more needs to be done to reach our targets.’ Whilst new technology may take time to develop, there are specific carbon reduction initiatives which are applicable to all operations. These include: • Fuel management workbooks, which monitor the mpg (miles per gallon) efficiency of vehicles Hams Hall multi-user facility – focus on energy The Fashion sector site, whose customers include Selfridges, Tie-Rack, Canterbury and BHS, has benefited from the use of the STARK energy consumption analysis tool, which has highlighted peaks in electricity consumption and prompted consideration for savings on a monthly basis. For further information please contact simon.kennedy@dhl.com Darren Lewis, Environmental Champion Reducing carbon emissions within the NHS As part of our drive to reduce carbon emissions, NHS Supply Chain’s Bridgwater team have worked closely with customers to reduce the carbon footprint of deliveries by 5.6 tonnes per year. This is difficult to imagine in practise – but actually equates to the weight of an elephant! The team recognised that a number of duplicate journeys were being made across the greater Bristol and Bath region. This meant drivers often doing the same journey, but passing by ‘drop off’ points they had delivered to earlier in the week. A project was launched which looked at reducing duplicate journeys. This was achieved by organising deliveries into five geographical zones and then delivering to each zone on only one day a week. As most customers had previously only had weekly deliveries, the only change was the week-day in which that delivery occurred. The reorganisation of deliveries affected approximately 100 drop-points from Bath to Weston-super-Mare. The new schedule was launched without a hitch after an extensive customer communication programme. The team has been delighted as they only received positive feedback. ‘It’s great to be actively involved in a project which not only delivers sound commercial benefit, but also has a favourable impact on our environment.
