Photo: Marc PikeKathryn E. Laurin, M.Mus, President and Vice-ChancellorThirty years of co-operative education at the Mount! Thisexciting milestone has been achieved through the dedicationand commitment of co-op employers, students, faculty, staff, and alumnae. The co-operative education program providesour students with access to the workplace in private, public,or non-profit sectors. Students are able to inject theirknowledge and enthusiasm into the workplace and take awaypractical skills and experiences to aid in making informeddecisions about their careers. As alumnae, you are able to play an important role in thedevelopment of co-op students by hiring and supervisingco-op students in your organizations. In 2008, approximately25 per cent of co-op supervisors were alumnae from theMount and 90 new employers hired co-op students. Ourco-op employers rate Mount co-op students as exceptionaland have established long term relationships with theprogram. Currently, the co-operative education program hasrelationships with employers from coast to coast in the areasof Business Administration, Information Technology, PublicRelations, and Tourism and Hospitality Management.Co-operative education celebrates three decades at theMount – what an accomplishment. This Mount ‘first’ inour region is just one more reason why our universityshines. Our program proudly compares to others atmuch larger institutions. More importantly, it trulyembodies the Mount experience – the balancebetween learning in the classroom and preparingstudents for their next path after graduation. Coopeducation was extremely valuable to me. As an18-year-old, it provided me with my first professionalemployment experience, the lessons from which I stillrely upon today. Many of us are now in hiring positions and I ask thateach of you think about how you can bring the co-opexperience to your place of business, no matter whereyou are in the world. If you already have an activeco-op program, I encourage you to become involvedas a supervisor or mentor. Now is the time to ‘pay itforward’ so Mount students benefit from another 30years of co-operative education.Donna Redmond Gates, BPR ’95In keeping with the Mount’s vision, as presented inDestination 2012, we have developed a plan to create thebest university experience and prepare our students for globalcitizenship. To support this vision, the co-operative educationprogram encourages students to engage in university life andbecome a volunteer in their communities, whether they are onwork term or studying on campus. On behalf of the Mount community, I am very pleased torecognize the achievements of the graduates from the cooperativeeducation program. Members of the Co-op Teamhave served in leadership roles on provincial, regional, andnational boards and committees to advance and promoteco-operative education, and have been recognized nationallyfor their efforts. We are extremely proud of the quality andsuccess of this significant initiative.Barbara Casey, BA ’70, BEd ’71Professor, English (Professor Emeritus)Associate Professor, Business Administration &Tourism and Hospitality Management2 Folia Montana

What is theconnection that leads you to supportingwomen in our community who pursuea higher education? In fact, Beacon has been supportingthe community since our founding in1988. Holland has often been heard tosay that one of the major influences inhis life was his mother. His mother wasa strong and independent personalitywho, being widowed at an early age, keenly understood the value of thedollar and hard work. “She would oftensay, take care of the pennies and thedollars will take care of themselves.”Holland recalls, “My mother taught methree important lessons. Born in Montreal, formative years in Winnipeg and backto Montreal, he came to appreciatethe value of Canada’s two officiallanguages. It certainly played a role inhis career in the investment businessas it has his son Daniel. Both havespent a portion of their career overseasand the “second” language was afacilitating factor.

Thirty Years of Enhancing Education Through Invaluable Work ExperienceThis year marks MountSaint Vincent University’sCo-operative EducationProgram’s 30 th year. Thisprogram exemplifies everyquality of the Mount itself– beneficial, collaborative, personalized and accessible.Co-operative Education is first andforemost about relationships. The Mountis extremely fortunate to have manysupporters of the program far and wide. One of those is Nova Scotia BusinessInc. (NSBI). Many former co-op studentsand Mount alumnae alike work within itswalls today. They all share in mentoringand guiding co-op students during theirtime there to ensure the most robustand meaningful experience possible. The Mount’s Co-operative EducationProgram is a story of tenacity andsuccess. All programs were originallydesigned to meet the standards setby the Canadian Association forCo-operative Education (CAFCE). Today,100 per cent of the University’s programsare accredited by CAFCE. Since themid-80s, the Mount has beenrepresented on the board of theNational Accreditation Council of CAFCEwhich sets standards for co-operativeeducation programs in Canada, and onCAFCE’s National Board of Directors.8 Folia Montana

She also later servedas the business faculty co-op advisorfrom 1985-89. MacGillivary recalls howquickly the co-op ‘trial’ caught on.“The students were so eager forco-op and were excited about thepossibility of being away from home. They were so focused on what theyhad in mind career-wise and co-opjust reinforced that.”Today, the co-op team has six staffmembers, led by Sonya Horsburgh, BBA’91, Manager, Co-operative Education, who received the Albert S. BarberAward from CAFCE in 2008 – its highesthonour. Horsburgh served as presidentof CAFCE from 2004 to 2005.Horsburgh and her team work closelywith co-op students and employersto provide valuable opportunitiesto enhance students’ educationalexperiences at the Mount. On average,80-100 students graduate with theco-op distinction on their diplomasannually. So, what’s next for co-op? A newhome is in sight. The construction ofthe Co-operative Education Centre isan integral goal of the Mount’s currentcapital campaign – Building TomorrowTogether. The move from Seton Annexto the new Teaching, Learning andResearch Centre will mean enhancingthe technology of the co-op process. With many employers outside theregion, the ability for students tointerview using video conferencingtechnology will improve the deliveryof co-op services for students andemployers alike. As degree programs at the Mountcontinue to grow and change,co-op will evolve with them. As newdegree programs develop, they will beevaluated to determine if co-operativeeducation will be a part of their future. In order for co-op education to thrivein the next thirty years, employers mustcontinue to show their unwaveringsupport. A huge component of thisinvolves the commitment of alumnae, and in particular, former co-op students. In 2007, 37 per cent of co-op studentswere being supervised by alumnaeand/or co-op alumnae on their workterms. DONOR REPORTMount Saint Vincent University has one of the mostheavily treed campuses in the Atlantic Region. It hashad the status of arboretum, which means having adiverse collection of trees and shrubs that encompassthe property. Overlooking the ocean below, the Mountcampus is undeniably beautiful. The Gift Tree Program has been a tremendous successthrough the years. Approximately 100 trees have beenplanted on campus, adding to its beauty and charm. But with the success of this program, space to continueplanting gift trees on campus is limited, at best. We arevery excited therefore to introduce a new Gift ProgramWe want to take advantage of our exceptional campus bycreating welcoming and comfortable outdoor spaces. Thisincludes creating sheltered social squares, to provideprotection from the elements; increasing the numberof benches, to sit and enjoy; and installing bike racks,to encourage health and wellness by taking a bike toschool and work.Another new strategy is to restore an urban forest oncampus hit hard by Hurricane Juan in 2003. A seriesof footpaths run through this wooded section of landbetween Rosaria and Seton. With appropriate planning, such as the installation of park benches and removalof tree debris, we can create an environment to study, reflect, and enjoy the abundance of wildlife thatsurrounds us.The new program will work much the same way as thegift tree program. The donors will be provided with alist of items and their purchase price. There will be theopportunity to choose from a list of available spaceson campus to locate the item and the wording that willappear on the plaque to be mounted. The gift will thenbe maintained and enjoyed for years to come.Although the Gift Tree Program will no longer exist, wewant to ensure donors that all existing gift trees willcontinue to be nurtured and well maintained. For more information on the new Gift Program, pleasecall 902.457.6270 or email lori.scott@msvu.ca.FriendsCarla Gillis.................................. 1979Christena Gillis........................... 1983Yvonne Gillis............................... 1981Sharon Godsell.......................... 2005Catherine Godwin..................... 1961Lisa Gogan.................................. 2002M. A message from the Sisters of CharitySubmitted by Sisters of Charity Communications OfficeThe Sisters of Charity Motherhouse is now being dismantled. The building hasn’t served the Sisters’ needs for many yearsand in early 2008, it was announced that the most viable optionwas deconstruction. This was the third Motherhouse for the internationalcongregation based in Halifax. When the building was openedin 1959, it was the largest structure east of Montreal. It wasdesigned to accommodate 900 Sisters and Academy studentswith a gymnasium, an auditorium and a chapel the size of aparish church. The Motherhouse served the broader communityin many different capacities as it was renovated and space wasrepurposed over the years.Congregational Leader Sister Donna Geernaert, BSc ’64, saidthat dismantling it “was not an easy decision, but it reflectsour recognition of deteriorating conditions in the building andchanges in the real estate market in recent years. Decisionsaround the Motherhouse building and property need tobe practical ones, based on what’s best for the future ofthe Congregation.”Sisters of Charity MotherhouseMemorabiliaPewter Ornament $15Aitkens Pewter replica of the building exteriorItalian Marble $10A 3” slice of marble from within the buildingThe Sisters of Charity contracted Shannex to construct a newbuilding just across the road from the Motherhouse, at the topof the hill above campus. Approximately 100 retired Sisters arenow living on five floors of a comfortable, attractive new homecalled Caritas Residence. The ground floor of the building isa totally separate space called the Sisters of Charity Centre, housing the “head office” of the Congregation: Leadership Team, finance, communications and advancement offices, and thecongregational archives.Though a few significant elements from the Motherhouse wereincorporated into the new building, most of its contents weredonated or sold. Proceeds from the sale of the more than12,000 auction items will help support Sisters’ projects here andinternationally. The Casavant organ is now installed at St. Agnes Church, Halifax.Stained glass panels are now located at the Sacred Heart Boys’School, Saint Benedict Parish and in private collections. Pewswent to various churches and even a restaurant in Bedford. The green plush auditorium seating found new homes withDartmouth Players, the Yarmouth Regional Arts Council, andEvergreen Theatre in Margaretsville. Paintings were donated tovarious collections including the Musée de Kent in Bouctouche,NB (home town of artist Sister Agnes Berchmans) and theArt Gallery of Nova Scotia. Furniture and hundreds of otherpieces were donated to Parker Street Furniture Bank, Habitatfor Humanity, Metropolitan Immigrant Settlement Associationand other non-profits. Some items went as far as Ghana, in acontainer filled with furniture, books, linens and physiotherapyequipment. The Motherhouse building is being dismantled in a way thatis both environmentally sensitive and economically sound.Materials will be reused to the extent possible. The Motherhousehas played a part in thousands of lives over its 49-year lifespan.Sisters remember its early years when they were novices, andthe many Congregational celebrations. Others reminisce abouttheir time there as students, staff or retreat participants. Theyfound support and comfort at the dePaul Centre, in the Chapel,in visits with individual Sisters. What many people remember is the camaraderie, the warmwelcome, the caring environment. That hospitality and caring isstill there, on the Halifax property and everywhere else a Sisterof Charity lives and serves. The Sisters of Charity mission – theirspirit, their work, their service to others – doesn’t depend ona building.Proceeds from the sale of Motherhouse memorabiliawill help support the work of the Sisters. For more information or to place an order, please contactthe Sisters of Charity Communications officeEmail: communications@schalifax.caPhone: 902 457-3549www.schalifax.caMotherhouse MemoriesThe Congregation is creating a commemorative piece toreflect some of the many happy stories and memories. Pleaseshare your best memory of the Motherhouse with the Sisters.Keep your story to less than 500 words, include any photosby July 15, if possible. Please email your Motherhouse memory to communications@schalifax.ca or call the Sisters of Charity CommunicationsOffice at 406-8119 to make other arrangements.Folia Montana 23
