PrologueEvidence-based medicine provides guidelines to physicians aimed at improvingefficacy and safety of patient management. This approach is to a great extentbased on the use of clinical scores and diagnosis algorithms that, in combinationwith patient clinical examination and laboratory tests, improve diagnosis accuracyand patient stratification. This approach also offers a better standardization of patientmanagement across centres and improves patient care reliability. For doctors who see patients with thrombotic and bleeding problems, or whose clinicalworkload makes it difficult to keep up with developments in the field of haemostasis,it is hoped that this algorithm booklet may be of some help in the managementof such cases. The use of score calculators and algorithms can facilitate decision making inboth diagnosis and treatment of thrombotic and bleeding problems. However, considering the multiplicity of these tools in recent years, it becomes necessary touse a comprehensive manual, without referring to the original sources in every case.An international expert panel has developed a booklet that compiles, in a clear andsimple way, most recognized and useful clinical scores and diagnosis algorithms in thefield of thrombosis and haemostasis: deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, pregnancy, cancer, DIC, antiphospholipid syndrome, atrial fibrillation, and bleedingrisk. Each algorithm includes the indication and a brief interpretation emphasisingthe most relevant aspects of each one followed by some representative references. We hope this algorithm booklet may guide the clinician in the most appropriatediagnostic and therapeutic strategy, answering some of the questions that may arisewhen treating thrombotic and bleeding problems. The authors7
