A specially congratulations to Matson Lawson for winning hisoverall Age Group Champion award and to Karly Mansfield for missing out by only a few points. A bigimprovement this year was the number of 12yrs & 11&Under points the club won. Julie-Anne has done a greatjob in developing that group to a high level.Jake Duggan winning 4 medals as a 10year old in the 11& under age group is fantastic. More importantly histime of 29.9 for 50m Freestyle, was in Ben‟s opinion, one of the top 3 performances overall. The other 2performances were Matson and Josh Beaver‟s 200m Backstroke times and Dylan Warren‟s 200m Freestyletime of 1:52.Matson‟s time in the 200m Backstroke of 2:00.1 places him about 12 th on the “All Time Top 10” list for OpenMale Backstrokers in Australia and 3 rd for 18yr olds. Josh Beaver‟s time of 2:01.1 places him 3 rd on the “AllTime Top Ten” list for 17 year old Backstrokers in Australia. Josh‟s time is faster than Matt Welsh ever swumas a 17yr old. So both of them are 3 rd for their age groups in Australia when compared against every 17 & 18yrold in the history of Australian swimming!Other great performances were the Boys 18&under relay team winning the Blue Ribbon event of the State Ageprogram the 4x100m Freestyle relay and Josh Beaver‟s 3 medals at State Open Champs beating OlympicSilver medallist Hayden Stoeckel in the 50m Backstroke. The other impressive site at the State Championships was our team uniform. So many coaches and swimmersfrom other clubs were impressed with the new look it was great amazing.

Christmas Party Club NightNewsletter January 2011Another memorable Christmas Party Club Night was held on December 10 th at Casey ARC with a few Oasis Otterswimmers also attending for the fun. Amongst some normal races, there were heaps of novelty races and relays withsome of the big kids having to carry the little kids like jockeys down the pool. But the big entertainment of the night, besides Santa… was the coin drop with over $300 of coins dropped into the pool for each squad to scavenge.Australia Day Brighton Open Water RaceThe TigerSharks raced the Australian Day Open Water event at Brighton. It was a great social day for all thekids brave enough to get in the cold water. Congratulations to all the younger swimmers in the Junior Dashwho competed in their first ever Open Water race. And congratulations to Nathan Cobbe for winning the Open1.4km race closely followed by Matson Lawson, and to Josh Beaver for coming 2 nd in the Age group category.Michael Klim withCharlotte & TahliaStart line for Junior DashYellow M&M‟s onlyMedallists with Michael KlimRecruitment Drive. With a lot of swim meets coming up in the next few months, it is important toremember consistent attendance at training will improve your skills and personal best times.Keep working on your stretching before and after training, Good Flexibility equals good technique.See you all on pool deck,JA

Ben’s BubblesNewsletter January 2011New Squad Structure From May 2 nd 2011From when I first arrived at the club in December 2004 there have been many changes. Changes to schedules, squads, committee structure, websites, uniforms and coaching staff. With every change there are some folkthat are happy and some that are not, that‟s just the nature of change I suppose. But every change we‟ve madehas been for the future betterment of the club as a whole. The successful growth and development of theSenior Competition Squad is a recent example. With Julie-Anne on board as one of the highest credentialedassistant coaches in Victoria I think the club is ready for its next change in squad structure. Julie-Anne and Ihave looked at the current squad lists with growth and the club‟s future in mind and have decided to add anadditional squad called “National Open”. This would sit above the current National squad which would fromthen on be called “National Age”. This change will not only benefit the older swimmers, some of which havebeen with the club longer than myself, but it also directly benefits the younger swimmers in lower squads thatwe have due to the inherent re-shuffle upwards of about 14 swimmers in each group.CurrentNewUntil April 30 thMay 2 nd - OnwardsDevelopment DevelopmentJunior JuniorState Target State TargetState Youth State YouthNational National AgeNational OpenSenior Competition A & B Senior Competition A & BA National Open Squad has become a necessity now that the club has mature aged athletes competing at aNational Open level and now are realistic chances of making senior Australian teams. It is no longerappropriate to have 13 year olds in the same squad who have not yet been to a National Age competition.Shifting approximately 10 athletes initially (and up to 16 eventually) from the current National Squad to thenew National Open Squad will mean there are 10 spots in the National Age group that need filling with keenyoung swimmers from the current State Youth or Senior Comp Squads. As with any new squad, the “National Age” Squad is named for what it will grow into, not necessarilymeaning all swimmers in the group are able or old enough to qualify for National Age in 2012. Swimmers inState Youth who are offered the opportunity to move into the new National Age Squad should jump at theopportunity. It will not be that much harder than Lane #1 in State Youth and any increase will be phased overa long period of time. This new squad structure will mean new training times for most squads. This is usually the part that pleasessome and disappoints others. It is unfortunately unavoidable. When redesigning squad schedules there aremultiple issues to consider, some of which are: location, senior athlete study times, coaching roster and abilityto coach together occasionally, available lane space, periodization of weekly training plans, recovery times,

Newsletter January 2011transport etc. I intend to finalise the new training schedule as early as possible, expect it to be publishedsometime in late March.A list of which swimmer has been allocated to which squad will be made public at the same time as the newschedule, late March. Coaches will initially place each swimmer in the squad we feel best suits them, afterwhich swimmers and parents are encouraged to talk with Ben or Julie-Anne directly with any questions. Thisis an exciting development for the club, please be patient through this process and call Ben directly with anyquestions you may have.Case Study #2Steve’s goes to his Physiotherapist with a shoulder pain that has been getting worse over the last 3 weeks of training. His Physio recommends that he must stop swimming for 4 months whilst having an MRI scan and completing hisrehabilitation exercises.Steve has very poor posture which greatly inhibits the Range of Motion (RoM) in his shoulders. If Steve had completedan RoM Screen Test with the team Physio at the start of the season, he would have identified key areas for Steve toinitiate a “prevention and improvement” stretching and strengthening program which would improve his RoM and histechnique, rather than a rehabilitation program.Club Championships 2011This year the Club Championships will be held after the National Age Championships to better allow allswimmers to compete on the same day. There is no date confirmed yet, but somewhere between April 26 th andMay 8 th is likely. We will inform you of a date asap. The aim this year is to run all age groups on the same daywith the same events as last year. Stay Tuned.National Age Championships PreparationsThe National Age Championships for 2011 are rapidly approaching. This year the Championships will be heldin Adelaide for the first time in many years at the new Aquatic Centre. Newsletter January 2011Change Room TimesThe amount of time being spent by some swimmers who get out before the end of the session to get changedin the mornings is still too long. As an unmotivated individual you may be happy with missing training timeand taking long showers and getting changed slowly but as a squad and a team it is unacceptable. Theatmosphere and culture of the National and State Squad is eroded if there are swimmers who think it is alrightto take that long getting changed when their team mates are still in the water training, staying in later andgetting changed quicker. If you are getting out when the session has ended, by all means take as long as youwant. If you need to get out early then the following rules apply:1. All swimmers getting out of a session early must tell the coach what time before the session starts.2. Total change room time for Boys: 9min3. Total change room time for Girls: 12minIf you think you cannot get showered and changed in this amount of time let me know and I will get someonethat can help show you how to do it. 9/12min is the time between getting out of the pool and getting picked up.Thanks to Boost Juice at Fountain Gate, the TigerSharks nowhave lots of monthly training awards for all squads.Swimmers showing great skill and intensity in training can nowbe rewarded with something they love!Club Policies for TrainingParent Pick-ups From Casey ARCIt is now club policy that all parents/guardians pick up their swimmers from within the reception area of Casey ARC &RACE. There have been several incidents with swimmers and strangers just outside each of the facilities, so all parentsmust meet their swimmers inside the centre. Also please always be 5 minutes early when picking up your athletes fromany activity so coaches do not have to wait with swimmers on their own time. Coaches cannot practically know, or waituntil every swimmer is picked up due to swimmers being in change-rooms etc. If you are unable to arrive 5 minutesearly to be ready for supervised pick-up please make other arrangements for your swimmer to be picked up promptly. Inan emergency please call reception at either pool. Coaches will generally not answer mobile calls during training.Thanks.Supervision of Swimmers under 10 years at ARC & Cranbourne ARCWe have been asked by YMCA staff to remind all parents of young club swimmers that all children under the age of 10must be supervised by an adult at all times. This means under 10 swimmers can not be dropped off 15 minutes prior tosquad training starting without being closely accompanied by an adult. A swimmer is under coach supervision if they arestretching on pool deck 10 minutes before their session starts and parents can then remain in the cafeteria area.Swimmers are encouraged not to have a play swim before the session starts. Once squad begins, swimmers are undertotal coach supervision so there is no need to stay on deck. Any questions, please phone Ben 0413-513-969Watching TrainingParents are asked to sit out of eye contact with their children, as the child will often modify their behaviour because ofthe parent‟s presence. They also become distracted from the tasks they are being set by the coach. If you choose towatch our training sessions it is club policy that you do so from the:1. Cafeteria area at the Casey ARC Pool or seats near the Spa area.2. Cafeteria area at Casey RACE or seats near “Lane 8 at the shallow end” of pool only.

Newsletter January 2011“Swimmer Only” AreaThe following club policy is designed to foster a “swimmer only” area on our crowded pool decks:The only parents able to sit on pool deck at the side of the pool when a squad is training are those of newDevelopment & Junior Squad swimmers aged 9 years old or younger.Parents of swimmers in State Target, State Youth, Senior Comp or National Squads should not enter the trainingpool deck area at Casey ARC or RACE.All Junior-National Squad swimmers should be able to put on their own goggles, caps and fold their clothes themselves.Teaching this skill early fosters the swimmer‟s self-esteem and enhances their feeling of involvement and selfimprovement.A young swimmer who knows how to put on their own goggles and cap is much more likely to also learnnew stroke skills quickly. Crowded pool deck areas also make pre-training stretching difficult for swimmers.
