MIMOS FocusNANOELECTRONICSMIMOS Nano Centre to be key catalyst forNanoMalaysiaThe state-of-the-art MIMOS Nanoelectronics Centre is set to act as a catalystfor the NanoMalaysia Programme.MOSTI Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili and Secretary-General Dato’ Madinah Mohamad getting abrief on MIMOS’ nanotechnology products from Nanoelectronics Director Saat Shukri Embong at the recentNanoMalaysia Summit. In line with the national aspirationof making nanotechnology the enablingengine for the new economic growth, the centre is focusing on incorporatingNanotechnology to its platforms whichare expected to directly contributetowards the National Key FocusAreas namely in agriculture, health, education, government services andcommunications.Current research activities of thecentre, which was recently certifiedas one of five national NanotechnologyCentres of Excellence, includenanomaterials growth, fabricationof nanostructures, preparation ofnanoparticles and nanocomposites aswell as characterisation, testing andintegration of innovative nanomaterialsand nanostructures in Micro-NanoElectronic Mechanical Systems (NEMS/MEMS). Its current capabilities includeboth top-down and bottom-up nanomanufacturingon various substrateincluding silicon, glass, ceramics, polymers, etc.In the pipeline are plans to developmore devices and materials for sectorssuch as agriculture, aquaculture, the environment, health, safety anddefense. The centre works closely withthe National Nanotechnology Directorateat MOSTI to provide a common platformfor universities, research centresand industries aimed at buildingcollaborations towards a concertedeffort in developing the nation’snanotechnology capabilities. This alsoinvolves establishing MIMOS as thegateway for international collaboration innanotechnology research. More advancedFailure and Material Analysis equipmentwill be added in the next few years tofurther improve accessibility of theseservices to local companies and MNCs inline with MIMOS’ plan to be the preferredshared facility in nanofabrication, nanocharacterisation and full-scalemanufacturing of nano-based devices forthe country as well as being the referralcentre in nanoelectronics for the region.A quick look at the centre’s fouryearroadmap reveals plans developed inline with global market expectations. In2012, efforts will focus on developinggas and heavy metal sensors and digitalfarming intelligent systems; while 2013will see further advancement of its sensorsto target applications such as biosensors, remote environmental monitoring andfood traceability. In 2014 the focus willbe on body nutrient sensors, livestock andplant disease monitoring systems; while2015 will see the sensors developed intoa reconfigurable platform, with focus onwearable bio-medical devices integratedwith ubiquitous sensors. The centre presently has 34 people,11 of whom are PhD holders; while itsWafer Fabrication plant employs 200people. mf24
