MIMOS FocusNANOELECTRONICSTaking nanoelectronics to a greater scaleWhen Prof Dr Masuri Othman moved from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia(UKM) to MIMOS in 2006, his slight bemusement was explicable – it wasa migration from a “free-for-all” playground to a corporative, KPI-orientedenvironment.His new leader, CEO Abdul WahabAbdullah (now Datuk), was equally new atMIMOS, but was fresh from the industry.MIMOSFocus recently had the privilege oftalking with Prof Masuri where he sharedon his notable journey in knowledge anddiscovery. “It was difficult,” the affableprofessor recounted.Prof Masuri was with UKM from 1980to 2006, first as a lecturer, then a professorin Microengineering and Nanoelectronics. When he checked in at MIMOS, it was amajor change of environment. His academiabackground had seemed incongruous withMIMOS’ industry-oriented approach. “Butthings went smoothly with guidance and helpfrom industry friends,” he said. “And beforelong, I was able to align and work togetherwith my new team,” he acknowledged.Currently on secondment to MOSTI;reporting to the Minister’s Office, Prof Masuriis to drive technology pre commercialisation. He now helps MOSTI in establishing policies, strategies and framework, and lately on thecreation of an investment committee underAgensi Inovasi Malaysia (AIM) GovernanceCouncil chaired by the Prime Minister.Naturally, he finds this very interestingand timely since all his experiences inuniversity and MIMOS are put to good use.Prof Masuri’s key role now is to spearheadthe setting of the committee in order tostreamline the funding ecosystem such thatgovernment investments in R&D will givemaximum returns, which in turn will createwealth for the country towards transforminginto a high income nation. When asked on nanotechnology’scontribution to Malaysia’s competitiveness,Prof Masuri said that at MIMOS the focusis on product innovation. Micro-nano is justone of the thrust areas through which thecompany is coming up with the big solution– the technology platforms. “I was the headof micro-nano cluster and I worked closelywith other clusters to create technologyplatforms that are useful for the industry tocreate products which are customisable inmany applications,” he disclosed. “Micronanois and will be very important area thatgovernment has invested in,” he added. The Nanoelectronics Centre22

NANOELECTRONICSMIMOS Focusat MIMOS works with the NationalNanotechnology Directorate in MOSTIand all nano Centres of Excellence (CoEs)in the country in order to come out withR&D findings that can be commercialised.Nanotechnology is a generic platform thatcan be used in many applications. Forinstance, in MIMOS the technology is usedin developing nanosensors and devices forstoring charges for applications such as inmicroenergy.Prof Masuri said that nano is anemerging technology which promises a lot offuture applications which can be leveragedon. “However, the critical issue is translatingthe fundamental R&D into commercialisableinnovations due to many factors such asstability, reproducibility of the devicesor system built from nanotechnology. Inaddition, the manufacturing of nanodevicesand nanosystems are still a big issue interms of manufacturability – consistency, yield, robustness, cost effectiveness, etc,”he said.Prof Masuri said that MIMOS’R&D&C programme is now a benchmark forother institutions in Malaysia and for this,MIMOSians have always been invited to beresource or reference person. In the last fiveyears MIMOS has developed a structuredapproach in R&D incorporating world classindustry processes such as Six Sigma,CMMI, PCMM, putting the company at parwith global players, he said. The professor’s passion for hisarea of expertise was palpable throughoutour conversation. A firm believer thatIP is an important corporate asset, ProfMasuri said protection of IP is crucial inthis knowledge-based economy. “One of myroles at the cluster is to build the portfolioof IPs for MIMOS. As you can see in thepast few years, MIMOS’ position in IP filingis showing drastic improvement,” he said. For the record, in 2010 Malaysiawas ranked 25th at Patent Cooperation Treaty(PCT), where out of the total 334 patentsfiled by Malaysian applicants, 135 werefiled by MIMOS. A year earlier, Malaysia wasat 30th rung while in 2008 at 33rd spot.Prof Masuri can proudly affirm that a healthysection of the IPs filed by MIMOS is micronano-related.The total patent disclosurecount for MIMOS Nanoelectronics Centrehas also increased from 24 in 2006 to 190in 2010, of which six patents have beengranted by MyIPO. To boot, the NationalCoE status awarded by MOSTI in June 2011is an accomplishment in itself and a clearrecognition of MIMOS’ continuous efforts inR&D on nanoelectronics. mf23
