Suggested syllabusTo help you introduce animal welfare into yourteaching WSPA has created a suggested syllabus.All topics are optional and it is intended as a supporttool from which you can pick and choose items youare comfortable with.The content suggested here should be applied within the framework of ideal delivery outlined in thePedagogy: teaching animal welfare to children chapter in this pack. Within this chapter you will find learningtheories and teaching methods designed to help you introduce animal welfare concepts to children.To successfully challenge the attitudes and behaviour of your students, and to develop compassion andrespect for animals, it requires more than simply transferring information on animal welfare. The chapterdemonstrates how to encourage environmental sensitivity amongst your students, what opportunitiesthey should be given to develop ownership of the issues raised and how to empower them to act and findsolutions to animal welfare issues.Section 1 of this syllabus outlines details that could be covered in lessons on all the major animal welfareissues that exist so that you can choose to teach stand-alone lessons on a particular topic if you choose.A large number of animal welfare organisations have produced excellent teaching resources many ofwhich can be found on our education database www.animal-education.org. Some examples of specificresources will be highlighted in section 1, but the list is not exhaustive and we recommend that you searchour database to find what you are looking for.Topics have been given a complexity rating which indicates the level of preparation required by youto deliver the subject, as well as the ability or age range of the students. Subjects will also be rated ascomplex if the topic is likely to involve disturbing imagery. Please use your professional judgement to see ifthe material is suitable.Section 2 lists the same issues but according to how they might be used to assist in the delivery ofsubjects, such as science and maths. The subject of animal welfare is a versatile one. It can be used toillustrate a point in many other curricular areas and therefore, this is simply a guide to get you started. Onceyou are comfortable with the subject matter, you may find that you use it in a variety oflessons and curricular areas not outlined here.With any of the following suggested topics, debates are useful techniques for establishing the opinions ofthe class. It should not be assumed that all students agree with the sentiments to start with.
