CASE STUDY | HILTI CORPORATION | USAHILTI CORPORATIONIf you’ve ever been to a construction site, chances are you’veseen Hilti Corporation’s construction tools or its plumbing, heating and air conditioning mechanisms. Hilti’s signaturebright red industrial tools and components are used byconstruction crews around the world. The worldwiderenowned brand, Hilti Corporation, has been providing leadingedgetechnology to the global construction industry since1941. The company is located in more than 120 countries andemploys 20,000 people worldwide. Its North America headquarters are located in Tulsa,Oklahoma where it employs more than 700 people. As thecorporate headquarters grew in size, it became increasinglyimportant to protect its numerous assets. Hilti turned toDowley Security Systems, Inc. who helped plan and designtheir security management system. After assessing Hilti’sneeds, which included protecting a large product testing area, training department, and operations, sales and administrativeoffices, Hilti chose to install AMAG Technology’s SymmetryBusiness Security Management System. One of Hilti’s first mandatory security procedures was that allemployees wear a security issued identity badge. SymmetryBusiness helped Hilti meet this first security requirement. Allemployees have their photo taken and are issued a proximitycard. The proximity card is programmed to allow theemployee into their designated department, and any otherareas of the headquarter building pertinent to their jobfunction. They are also assigned entry and exit times.Contractors and vendors are issued proximity cards withlimited access. Visitors with escorts must wear a badge aswell, but it is not a proximity card. Symmetry Business comesstandard with a visitor management feature to help manageaccess for all visitors.“Everyone who enters Hilti or works for Hilti is required towear a badge to prove who they are and that they belong inthe building,” said Hilti Corporation, Corporate SecuritySupervisor, Lonnie Parker. “Implementing access cards allowsthe security department to keep track of who is coming in andout. This is critical information to track if there is anincident.”Symmetry Business’ ID badge designer, included in the accesscontrol software, allows Hilti’s security staff to easily capturecard holder images, design badge layouts and print on demand.Hilti creates different styled badges for contractors andemployees, making it easy to decipher who is an employee andwho is a contractor. An around the clock security staff works in a large commandcenter that uses 8-10 monitors, with 28 CCTV cameras, tomanage its Symmetry Security Management System and its 80proximity readers. In addition to access control, they useSymmetry as an intrusion system and monitor access points oninterior doors and main doors throughout the facility. When adoor is held open too long, an alarm is activated in thecommand center. The security staff can dispatch a guard orradio the roaming guards to investigate. The easy-to-useSymmetry system makes it simple to know right where todispatch the guard saving critical time and minimizing securityrisks.“It was important to the security staff to install a user friendlysecurity management system,” said Dowley Security Systems,Inc., General Manager, Mary Reed. “Symmetry Business is userfriendly and easy to understand.”The warehouse created a special challenge for Hilti. Inventorywould turn up missing, leaving the manager baffled as to itslocation. After further investigation, it was discovered thatinternal departments would pull product from the shelves to

This has saved countless man-hours over theyears and helped our department run more efficiently.”Other areas within the headquarter building are highlyrestricted due to different sensitivities:• Computer room -The main servers are kept under tightcontrol and only the IT department and high levelexecutives are allowed access.• Warehouse area - Only authorized people are allowedinto that area during peak operating times to protectemployees and assets.About Dowley SystemsDowley Security Systems is the leading provider of electronicsecurity and network integration solutions delivering a fullrange of security design, installation, service and support tothe critical infrastructure and commercial markets.
