BROMLEY-BY-BOW, EAST LONDONCase StudyMethodologyThe Envirotreat Soil Mixed Re-active barriercontains modified pillared E-clays designed toremove and chemically immobilise the primepollutants of concern, which are primarily organic innature. The clays incorporate the requisitetreatment capability for the effective treatment ofboth cationic and anionic metallic species onsite.Plate 1 – Completed commercial buildings following theinstallation of the barrier.Completion Date: September 2003Development:Consultant:Developer:Site OverviewCommercial / IndustrialBWB ConsultingProLogisEnd Value: £12mThe works were conducted over a 2-week periodunder the auspices of Envirotreat’s Mobile ProcessLicence (MPL). Specialist technology, materials andsupervision were supplied by Envirotreat, whilstNorwest Holst supplied all the required plant, andlabour for application of the Envirotreat ® Process. The total length of the active barrier was 80 m, withan average depth of 9m (the total depth varied withthe depth of the underlying clay into which thebarrier was keyed into). The barrier was installed by advanced soil mixingtechniques using continuous flight auger systems. The active barrier comprised a single row ofoverlapping columns (each column having anominal diameter of 900 mm).The Bromley site occupies an area of approximately7 acres. The site is contaminated with pollutantsfrom historical activities near the site, most notablyfrom the adjacent gasworks. It was the intention ofProLogis (Developer) to redevelop the site forcommercial / industrial end use.The contaminants of concern originated from thenearby gasworks and surrounding industrial areaand include, Cyanide, Ammonia, PAH’s and TPH.They are located predominantly within the madeground and underlying gravely clay.ObjectiveThe remediation strategy at the Bromley site was toinstall an Active Containment System comprising anactive (permeable reactive) barrier incorporatingEnvirotreat modified pillared E-clays ® . Thisremediation approach addressed the on-sitecontamination problems and prevented the potentialrisk of future contamination of the adjacent sitethrough groundwater migration.Plate 2 – The mixing zone set-up for the Bromley siteValidationEnvirotreat were requested to undertake thevalidation of the barrier. Two boreholes used in theinitial site investigation were utilised for validation. They are situated outside of the contaminant plumeand in line with the anticipated migration path.Envirotreat Limited

W= mg F = ma2. An Atwood’s machine is cleverly used to lift a gnome(m = 0.7kg) using a large rabbit (m = 3.4kg).a. What is the weight of the gnome?b. What is the weight of the rabbit?c. Draw a FBD for each object.d. What is the net force acting on the system?e. What is the acceleration of the system?
