This summer I amworking my first internship for Sealaska as an intern in theNatural Resources department in Craig, Alaska.Values In Action StatementThis internship has provided me with forestry related experience in part of SoutheastAlaska that I had previously never visited, as well as experience with a unique business,Sealaska. Sealaska’s four Values In Action are clearly represented in my 10-weekinternship. Natural resources, especially the use and sustainability of our land, arehighly beneficial and necessary for the people of Southeast Alaska to thrive. Theforestry practices that we have been instilling include clear-cut boundary marking, cedarseedling research implementation, and thinning inspections. These practices haveenabled the social and financial benefits from our natural resources from the past to becontinued through the indefinite future due to sustainable methods. This position hasprovided us with training from several different entities that will aid us in becomingleaders in our field. The fourth and final value that focuses on institutional partnershipsand collaboration can clearly be seen in the cedar seedling research study which iscombining the resources, time and effort of the Sealaska Corporation, the United StatesForest Service, and Oregon State University employees. This internship has been aremarkable experience that has provided me with the opportunity to gain knowledgeand field techniques that will benefit my future career in the wildlife ecology field as wellas providing me with the background into the four Values In Action.

My people are from the villages of the Place Where the Canoes Rest, andthe Ohsweken Canadian Reservation.Values In Action StatementIn order to grow and become experienced in working with different indigenous, I decidedto pursue my post-secondary education within a different indigenous population, in theSouthwest United States. Not a day goes by where I do not long for the forests, rain andwaters of Southeast Alaska. Sealaska Corporation has given me the ability to be backon our land, Haa Aaní. The aid in my travel for the internship, helped me be able tocome home and work in Juneau, where I could be on Haa Aaní and also have the abilityto do subsistence with my family in Yaakw.daat (Yakutat), both important componentsof my self-identification. Being back in Southeast Alaska has also helped me come to astate of Wooch.Yax: Balance, Reciprocity and Respect. I was able to find balance in myability to be home, and be in position where I could reciprocate to Sealaska HeritageInstitute and Sealaska Corporation for the scholarship that aided me during the schoolyear. As my internship has progressed, my position as Sealaska intern working for theHeritage Institute, gave me the ability to see the concept of Wooch.éen: workingtogether, where the collaboration benefited both institutions. I feel that the more thisinstitutional partnership is strengthened, the more both can grow and expand. In
