I don’t know whether Allan decipheredmy «8 or not, but he figured out what was going on.Many players would play a diamond to partner, countingon him to have read the diamond signal at trickthree. Allan realized that it would be hard for me tolead away from my presumed ªK so he cashed theªA before leading a diamond to my 10 --- how considerate!Allan’s play made it easy for me to cash the ªKand hold declarer to seven tricks, for 38 matchpointson a 51 top. Letting declarer make an overtrick wouldhave put us under average for the board. He's one of the most recent inductees into the ACBLJunior Corps and a new Life Master; Vijay Bal, 15, ofSacramento, CA.New Life Masters —Three with one blowThree members of the same team made LifeMaster together on Wednesday. I ruffed and led a trump tothe king which held. It seemed as though the «Qrated to be on my right, and I was better placedif it were, so I played a spade to the jack whichheld the trick. I cashed the «A, pitching a diamondfrom dummy and led the «K, ruffed andoverruffed. I now ruffed three hearts in my handand two more spades in dummy and cashed the©A for 11 tricks and 63 out of 64 matchpoints.West had three chances to beat the contract, but none was obvious. Going up with the ¨A toplay another trump works, as does ruffing the «Kwith the trump ace and exiting with a trump. Westalso could have pitched two hearts on the fourthand fifth rounds of spades and been in a positionto overruff the last heart. Why do I call 5¨ a bad bid and not just anoverbid? Because I knew I would likely havebought the hand in 4¨, and we’d have scored almostas well for plus 150 as for plus 600, with muchless risk. In fact, plus 150 would have been worth59 matchpoints, and plus 130 would have beenworth 55.Panoscontinued from page 1New National Head Caddies Rebecca Wickham, Ian Boyd, Travis Radtke, Mike Wickham and Molly McMahan.Jackie Matthews, caddy master for theNABCs, has announced five new inductees intoher “Caddy Bridge Hall of Fame”.Candidates for this honor must be at least 18,must have worked at least five NABCs and mustexhibit leadership abilities.Inductees named here in Chicago are:Rebecca Wickham, 20, of Naperville IL; IanBoyd, 20, of Calgary AB; Travis Radtke, 18, ofCaddy Hall of FameFort Collins CO; Mike Wickham, 19, (Rebecca’sbrother) also of Naperville IL and MollyMcMahan, 21, of New York NY.The inductees receive the title of NationalHead Caddy.Matthews said of the group, “These kids arejust wonderful. They always go the extra mileand take care of anything that needs gettingdone.”to make any plans we might have work.”He sympathized with the ACBL in its effortsto get more young people playing bridge. “Thereare so many activities available for American youth. The Junior Camp is a fine move, and other goodefforts have been made to interest Juniors. But theroad ahead is a long, long one. The situation isfrightening.” The ACBL sponsors a Junior Campevery other year.“We’ve got to try harder,” said Panos, “and theaccent is on the ‘we’. What happens in Americaaffects the entire world, and it is up to the WBF tohelp out in any way we can. I personally am willingto do whatever I can to help.”Panos explained why the World Junior Campis held only in Europe now. “To make it work financiallywe need a good crowd. We’ve had asmany as 156 pairs in the Junior Pairs, which precedesthe World Camp. That’s because so manyEuropean countries are pursuing Junior bridge sostrongly. If we tried this in the United States, wecouldn’t handle the financing. You have only 12teams in the Junior Trials. We’d need a lot moreyoungsters from other parts of the world to make aWorld Camp with Junior Pairs pay off. And theyoungsters from abroad wouldn’t have the fundsto get here.”

The director was calledto the table at that point.Result: 7¨ made seven --- plus 2140 for North-South (at the other table, North-South stopped in 6¨).Director’s ruling: table result stands. The facts: East-West appealed, claiming the longhesitation strongly implied that a bid other than 5¨was being considered. Even though the auction wasbeing carried out behind screens, it appeared to beobvious to all that the hesitation was by North, notby his screenmate (East).East-West also claimed that North’s slow 5¨made it much more likely that bidding on would bemore successful than passing. North argued that hewas considering whether 4¨ was a request for a keycard response, or for a cuebid. He eventually madethe response which could be neither. Unfortunately,it took a considerable amount of time to reach thisdecision. North argued that considerable time hadbeen taken by the opponents in other auctions (implyingthe delay in returning the bidding tray couldwell have been caused by East). What follows is the committee’s reasoning anddecision. It was easy to conclude that there had been a hesitation. It was also evident that North-South had noagreements in this situation. We nonetheless had valuableinformation from some of the things said bySouth during the hearing. Our reasoning was basedlargely on South’s comments.First, with respect to the 5© bid: had North decidedto bid 4NT over 4¨, there would have been astrong argument to force South to pass that call. The 5¨ bid, showing a fit, was at least somewhatencouraging. Note that while North-South did nothave agreements here, North did indicate that a cuebidover 4¨ would have promised first-round control (hesaid he did not want to bid 4ª as a response to Gerbersince that would have shown the ªA). South likewiseindicated that he would have expected a 4« bidto have shown the «A.Since South could still demonstrate that 6¨ wasa possible contract (North might have the «K) andthat 5NT would not be in jeopardy (if North does nothave a spade control then he must have either bothred kings or one red king-queen, either of which givesthem 11 tricks in notrump) the committee was in facontinuedon page 12

Page 12Canadian controversycontinued from page 6vor of allowing the 5© bid. While it is true that the hesitation suggests thatbidding on over 5¨ will be more successful than passing, the fact that North-South might have a slam andcannot get too high means that bidding on is not suggestedby the hesitation, but rather by the cards held.Note that one consequence of South’s argumentis that if North had bid 5NT over 5©, that should havedenied any spade control. With respect to the 6ª bid, some may argue thatthe 5« bid must promise the «A because North wouldhave bid 6¨ instead with the «K. As a matter of theorythat is debatable, but it is irrelevant here, where North-South clearly had no such agreements. Here again, acomment by South was crucial. When asked why hebid 6ª, he said it was because 5« promised a spadecontrol, and he bid 6ª “in case it was the ace”. SoSouth did not believe that North’s bidding alone hadpromised the «A.Now the reasoning was: North’s bidding hasstrongly suggested that he does not hold the «A (andif he does, then his hand is somehow unsuitable forslam --- why else would he not cuebid immediatelywhile holding trump support?). The hesitation over4¨ suggests he was considering some other call that,in the light of subsequent bidding, was almost surely4« (the other option, 4NT, is far less likely with ahand now known to hold trump support). For thispartnership, 4« would surely have shown the «A (seeNorth’s comment above). Therefore the bidding suggeststhat North does not have the «A, while the hesitationsuggests that North does.South certainly has logical alternatives to the 6ªcall, namely 6¨ and 6NT, and the hesitation certainlysuggests 6ª over the other calls. In fact, without astrong likelihood that North has the «A --- a likelihoodthat in the committee’s judgment was demonstrablysuggested by the earlier hesitation --- 6ª couldbe a very bad bid, since West would then be quitelikely to hold both the «A and the ªK, and in thatcase bidding 6ª commits North-South to 6NT, whileguaranteeing that it goes down by allowing West todouble for the lead. Thus, in the committee’s view, it would be wrongto allow the 6ª call, since it is demonstrably suggestedover the logical alternatives by the hesitation. The decision between 6NT and 6¨ remained. From South’s point of view, 6¨ is in some danger ofa spade ruff, while 6NT, played by North, is in somedanger of a red-suit lead setting up a king in West’shand while the «A is outstanding. For instance, giveNorth«K Q x ªQ x x ©K Q x ¨J x x x,or any other hand missing the «A and ªK, and notcontaining the ©K Q J x.In accordance with the Laws, when the offendingside has a choice of actions, of which any couldeasily be right, they are assumed to obtain the leastfavorable result which is at all possible. In this case, that is a bid of 6¨.As another point of interest, when on the actualauction the decisive moment arrived, the North-Southpair judged to bid 7¨ and not 7NT.Thus the committee felt there was no reason toassume that North-South would choose notrump asopposed to clubs at the six level.Daily BulletinAs a final point, which was not discussed by theplayers at committee, the question of allowing a continuationover a theoretical call of 6¨ was exploredby the committee. It was felt that had this beenbroached, it should be disallowed. The reasoning wasthat North, who was willing to play what he knewcould be a likely slam in 5¨ (the bid was, after all,non-forcing, and he could instead have jumped to 6¨at that point) out of fear of a greater disaster shouldthey have a misunderstanding, was clearly not aboutto bid a speculative 6NT or 7¨ if his partner signedoff in 6¨.Decision: North-South 6¨, making seven. Plus1390.Committee members:Doug Heron (chairman), Doug Fraser and DonKersey.Foul playTournament Director Ron Geagley, of WashingtonD.C., was directing four sections of a pair gameon Tuesday when he noticed something unusual onone of the boards. In three of the four sections, theresults were almost all plus 450 for East-West. In theother section, the scores were plus 480 for East-West.This is usually the indication of a fouled boardand after a quick investigation, Geagley discoveredthe problem. The board had been improperly madebecause the ¨9 and ¨10 had been switched, whichaccounted for the score difference.Players are cautioned to exercise care when duplicatingboards.FRIDAY MORNING 199ER PAIRSNORTH-SOUTH SECTION LL EAST-WESTA B C A B C1 Axaybabu Dave - Rekha Dave, Saline MI 133.70 1 1 Ron Fulkerson - Suzy Fulkerson, Bloomington IN 140.452 1 1 Charles Sweet, Barrington IL; J.
