Daily BulletinPage 3JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSYou gotta have heartBy Marti RonemusAnother day of excitement, world-classbridge, new people. Have you been able tosandwich a tour of the Bluegrass country intoyour days? If you can do so, don’t miss someof the big horsefarms. Whenyou see how thehorses live and aretreated, you mightstart wishingthat you wouldbe reincarnatedas a world-classrunner!Writing thesearticles has gottenme thinking about some of the various horses inmy life. People who’ve not spent a lot of timewith horses probably think they are all prettymuch the same, and would be astonished to findout how much their personalities differ. My father’s first racehorse was a marenamed Sandy Seattle. Dad bought her for theprincely sum of $300 (in 1958), and she wasthe perfect starter horse. One reason he selectedStandardbreds was he could be actively involvedin the training, and Sandy was a doll. She wasn’ttemperamental, so Dad could drive her for herpractice miles, learning as he went. She was allbusiness, and did whatever she was asked to do –except run really fast! My sisters and I never gotemotionally involved with Sandy: she was alwayspolite, but not really interested in us. We learnedfrom her, though…how to groom a horse, howto bathe them, how to (sigh) clean up after them.Even though she never won a race for my dad,she was worth a million bucks in experience. Then there was Jaws. I can’t remember thehorse’s real name, but you can guess why hisstable name was Jaws. We kids were forbiddento enter the barn unless he was firmly locked inhis stall. He was the exact opposite of Sandy. Hermanners were perfect, but she couldn’t run. Jawspaced like the wind, but was unmanageable, andeven though he did some serious winning for myfather, Dad had to get rid of him because of histemperament. And Lana, my father’s first real winner, wasa sweetheart! She was built dainty and small, notthe conformation of a big winner. Lana was aflirt, curious, loved us kids, would grab hold ofa shirt sleeve and shake it playfully. She adoredbeing groomed, would nibble at the brushes, making happy grunts.Thinking bridgeBy Eddie KantarDlr: East ♠ 10 9 8 2Vul: Both ♥ 7 5 2♦ Q 10 9 7 5♣ 2♠ 4 3 ♠ Q 7 6♥ A Q 8 6 4 ♥ 3♦ 3 ♦ A J 8 4 2♣ K Q 10 9 8 ♣ A J 7 6♠ A K J 5♥ K J 10 9♦ K 5♣ 5 4 3West North East South1♦ Dbl1♥ Pass 2♣ Pass4♣ Pass 5♣ All PassOpening lead: ♠A.Bidding commentary: As West, it is wisernot to redouble with 11+ HCP when you havea two-suited hand. It is wiser to simply makingLana was my introductionto heart, that indefinablecombination of courage anddetermination that sets somehorses, and people, apart – hardto define, easy to recognize.Lana was born to run, and lether people know it. When aStandardbred is being exercised,it wears one set of equipment. When it is going to be asked forsome serious speed or raced, itwears another. Lana would beecstatic when she saw the racingbike being readied; she knewshe would be allowed to letloose that day. Her excitementcould make her hard to manage,so whoever was “dressing”her would have to fool her andmaneuver her into positionwithout her seeing what she wasgoing to “wear” that day.Lana not only had a niceracing career despite her tinysize (unfortunately giving Dada taste for victory) but whenshe retired from the track, she had several lovely foals. After a long, long life, she diedpeacefully on my Uncle Dan’sfarm. While my dad had morethan his share of winners (andheaven knows, plenty of losers), he never hada truly Great Horse. People bandy the phraseGreat Horse around, applying it to (in my humbleopinion) way too many animals—and people.Once you’ve seen a great one, you are less likelyto use the phrase casually. Walter Farley, authorof The Black Stallion, wrote a fictionalizedbiography of Man ‘O War, where he describedhow awestruck he was when he first saw thehorse.I know what he meant. Once Dad took us toHanover Shoe Farms, the biggest Standardbredhorse farm in the world, and one of their standingstallions, Bullet Hanover, was in the field, exercising. I had no idea what horse it was orwhat his record was, but he stunned me withhis aura. He was beyond majestic, showing nointerest in the people looking at him, just movedback and forth across his field (and he made theearth his!) shaking the ground with his power.I would not have been surprised to hear that hewas the king of an alien species, come to conquera forcing bid at the one level with the intentionof bidding your other suit next. You want to getboth suits in before competition starts and this isthe best way. A one-level response after a takeoutdouble is unlimited and should be treated as ifsecond hand has passed. As North, once Westbids, you are off the hook and should be happyto pass. East’s 2♣ bid is natural and not forcing. As West, your jump raise to 4♣, bypassing 3NT,is both forcing and slam invitational. East, with aminimum, signs off in 5♣.Defensive commentary: As South, shift toa trump at trick two rather than set up declarer’s♠Q, a card partner doesn’t have given thenegative signal at trick one.Play commentary: As East, with hightrumps and short suits on both sides, think“crossruff.” Start by counting your top tricks. Youhave the club trick that you have just taken plusboth red aces for three. Next, count the trumptricks available. You remain with four trumps indummy facing three in your hand all of which canEarth. This horse was far, far above any I hadever been exposed to, and I have never forgottenthe impact he had, even though it was 38 yearsago. And now for our bridge tie-in. I’ll betyou can find an equivalent among your bridgeacquaintances for every one of these horses. Youcertainly know Sandy, and no doubt have had todeal with your share of Jaws-like players! And then there are the great bridge players. There’s a lot more to the greats than just theability to win. They have “heart.” Unlike themagnificent Bullet Hanover, you might not beable to spot them from their physical presence, but when you sit down with them, and theygraciously set about stomping you with class andkindness, you’ll recognize them for sure. And notforget them easily!!So let me hear about the characters you aremeeting… what are they like? Please e-mailme your stories and experiences. I’m bored andlonely with this stupid broken leg. mronemus@comcast.netbe made separately. Bottom line: you start withthree top tricks and can make seven more trumptricks by crossruffing. You are short one trick,so you need the heart finesse. After you take theheart finesse and it wins, cash the ♥A, discardinga spade, cash the ♦A and merrily ruff diamondsand hearts back and forth for 11 tricks.Intermediate-NewcomerTop 100(through Wednesday afternoon)15.94 Patsy Baker, Prospect KY15.27 Sarah Roy, Louisville KY10.54 David Wille, Louisville KY10.29 Karen Scott, Troy OH10.29 Ron Scott, Troy OH9.65 Richard Buttermore, Royal Oak MI9.65 Wendy Buttermore, Royal Oak MI9.05 Alice Olson, Bronxville NYcontinued on page 3

Daily BulletinPage 5Second in the Leventritt Silver Ribbon Pairs:Tom Kniest and Don Stack.Watch those spotsBy Barry RigalThis excellent card-play problem arose duringour second-round loss in the Vanderbilt KnockoutTeams. It’s a two-parter: consider it first in 6♣ byNorth and then the actual problem of 6♣ by South.♠ A Q 3♥ K Q 8 5♦ A 9 8 5♣ 4 3♠ 7 4♥ A 10♦ J 10 7♣ A K Q 10 7 6In 6♣ by North on a trump lead, you drawtrumps, pitching a spade from hand. Now perhapsthe best thing to do is strip off four rounds ofhearts, then run the ♦J to endplay East unless hebegan with five hearts. Almost as good at trick fouris to run the ♦J, won by East with the queen. Hemust return a low heart, and you put in the 10. Togive you any problem, West must be able to coverwith the ♥J. You win the ♥Q, unblock the ♥A,then cross to the ♦A, cash the ♥K (hoping for the 9to drop), pitching a diamond from dummy. If the ♥9 does not appear, you ruff a diamondin dummy, and if the remaining high diamonddoes not appear, you fall back on the spade finesse. That’s about a 90% shot, I think. At the table in 6♣ by South, on the lead of the♦4 you duck and East wins the king. Back comesa trump, and you draw three rounds, then cash thethree top hearts. If the ♥J 9 fall, it’s all over. At thetable, East shows out on the third heart. You nowpitch the ♦10 on the third heart and play the ♦A,West following with the 2, East with the 8. Whenyou lead the ♦9 from dummy, East follows withthe 6. Who has the queen? Surely East. If West hasled the ♦4 from Q-4-2, he deserves to beat you!The full deal:♠ A Q 3♥ K Q 8 5♦ A 9 8 5♣ 4 3♠ J 8 7 2 ♠ K 10 9 6♥ 9 7 6 3 2 ♥ J 4♦ 4 2 ♦ K Q 6 3♣ 8 5 ♣ J 9 2♠ 7 4♥ A 10♦ J 10 7♣ A K Q 10 7 6Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL conventioncard filled out and on the table. Please note thatother types of convention cards, such as the WBFconvention card or homemade cards that do notsufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.A Grand Old TimeBy Daniel WolkowitzWith the top 55 seeds in the Vanderbiltreceiving byes, the ACBL organized a closed Swissfor Monday. A few teams elected to play their ownpractice sessions, instead partaking in the officialwarm-up. One of these featured the Onstott andDeutsch teams in a friendly but exciting match. How would you and your partner bid thesecards?♠A J 5♠4♥A K Q 9 8 ♥J 6 4 3 2♦J 7 ♦A Q 6♣A K 6 ♣Q 10 9 2WestEast2♣2♦2NT3♦4♥followed by Blackwood and a signoff in 6♥.At the other, Icelanders Thorlakur Jonsson and JonBaldursson used a strong club opening and a nineroundauction in which East showed 1-5-3-4 withthe ♦A Q and the ♣Q. This seemed like enough toprovide two chances for the grand – or did it?The auction had made West declarer andNorth, Ron Smith of San Francisco led a diamondaway from the king. One potential problem ofpinpointing dummy’s assets is that the defenderswill know what to lead at trick one.Baldursson could not afford to take thediamond finesse at trick one because he had plentyof other chances to make his contract (doubleton♣J, 3-3 clubs or four clubs to the jack with the♦K).However, it’s likely that West would have bidthe grand anyway without the ♦J, and there wasno guarantee that East held the ♣10. If that was thecase, the diamond lead would force declarer’s handat trick one. On the actual hand, Smith held the ♦Kbut clubs were 3-3 and declarer guessed the endposition correctly. This deal came up in the second half:♠ Q 10 9 6♥ Q 3♦ A K 10 9 3 2♣ K♠ A J 2♥ A K 6 5 4 2♦ 6♣ A J 3Having reached a mediocre 7♥ contract, howwould you play on the lead of the ♥10?Obviously, you need 3-2 trumps and to eitherpick up the diamonds for at least four tricks ortake a spade finesse. How should you play to bestcombine your chances while avoiding a dangerousoverruff? There are two rather straightforward lines. One is to draw trumps in three rounds, and play fordiamonds 3-3 or the ♠K onside.Another line is for declarer to win in hand, play the ♦A and ruff a diamond, return to the ♥Qand ruff a diamond. This often beats the first linewhen the diamonds are 4-2 with the ♠K offside butloses when LHO is 3-2 in hearts and diamonds. Italso loses when the ♠K is onside and diamonds are6-0 or 5-1 with the defense able to ruff or score anextra trump trick via an uppercut when RHO is 2-1in the reds.As for the actual percentages, I’ll leave thatto the real math experts out there. My inclinationis that the second line is a few percentage pointsbetter, but not much more than that. At the table, this line was the winner, with LHO holding♠K 5 3 ♥J 10 7 ♦Q 8 5 4 ♣9 5 2Both tables were in the grand with one declarertrying each line, so this was a 20-IMP pickup forOnstott.♠♥♦♣Bridge bigcontinued from page 1but the Bridge Big creators and Zia are hopingthat competition for cash prizes will attract moreinterest from the public and the news media, givingbridge a shot in the arm.The company will begin a testing phase nextmonth and plan to roll out the finished productduring the summer, possibly in July. There will be a demo match on Friday at 11a.m. in the Breathitt Room in the Suite Tower, second floor. Bridge Big will award three $100cash prizes to spectators in a drawing.Players are also invited to become beta testersfor Bridge Big. Information is available on thehome page: bridgebig.com.An obvious concern, acknowledged by theBridge Big creators and Zia, is security (translation:cheating). They have already thought of that.To assure that no player gains an unfairadvantage, all competitions will be individuals, oneboard per round with an unknown partner againstunknown opponents (all such information will berevealed when the contest is over). No kibitzers areallowed, and the scoring will be duplicate but notagainst the field. The comparisons will be againstthe “history” of a deal that may have been playedhundreds of times previously. This is what the Bridge Big creators havewritten about security on the company web site:SecurityAnywhere there’s real money at stake, peoplewill look for ways to cheat. On Bridge Big, thiswill be no different. Bridge Big is committed toprevent any kind of cheating on its site.On bridge sites today it is very easy to cheatbecause players are allowed to see who theirpartners are. The only way to deal with this securityissue is by playing individually and anonymously. As an extra measure, players will not be allowedto chat with their partners during a game, althoughthey may still talk to their opponents. Even ifplayers somehow find out who they’re partneringwith, they can only benefit from this for one board, after which they’re split up again. However, even when players are not eachother’s partners they may still try to exchangeinformation about their hand to other playersin the tournament. To prevent this type ofcollusion, players cannot see what direction theysit at the table and what board they’re playing. The vulnerability at the table will also give noclue as all simultaneously played games in atournament share the same vulnerability and dealercombination. The limited time players have forone board also limits the feasibility for players toexchange useful information. Only after a boardhas been played by everyone in the field will a userbe able to see all four complete hands. In smaller tournament settings, these measuresmight still not prove sufficient. Although seatingschedules on Bridge Big will never allow twoor more tables to be playing the same boardsimultaneously, players could still leak informationabout previously played boards to each other. In larger tournaments this is less of a threatas players will be divided over multiple sections, each with a unique set of boards, hindering playercollusion significantly as collaborating playerswill be seated in different sections for most of thetournament. In smaller tournaments or in the final rounds ofa large knockout tournament it would be preferableif boards are only played exactly once. Scoreswould be compared not to other players in thetournament, but to all players that ever played theboard before in previous tournaments. Aside fromthwarting colluders, this measure has an additionaladvantage: it provides players with a fairer score,as their results are compared to hundreds of otherplayers, instead of only the handful that are in thetournament.continued on page 13

Gardner tookfull advantage, despite being the person preemptedby her own partner. She started patiently with 2NT— modified Ogust. She learned that I liked myhand, ostensibly 8--10 high-card points, and didn’tlike my suit (I upgraded my two kings; she’s seenmy active bidding over many years!).After RKC confirmed the ♦K, Gardner wasnot content with the likely small slam. Bonnieand her husband, Marvin, ran the Henderson KYgame for years and were well known as bridgepromoters throughout western Kentucky andsouthern Indiana.Bonnie won numerous regional and sectionalchampionships; always at tournaments closeto Henderson as she rarely traveled away fromhome. At the table she was famous for her fiercecompetitive spirit, the quality of her play, and forher calm and friendly demeanor. Indeed, Bonniewill always be remembered for her kindness andgrace. We name this event in her and her daughter’shonor and as a tribute to her, her daughter andher husband Marvin, who continues to run theHenderson game and promote bridge in westernKentucky.Eleanor Orr Memorial299er PairsEleanor Orr was primarily a rubber bridgeplayer, but she was devoted to the game and playedseveral times each week. She particularly enjoyedher Thursday afternoon game with Florence“Teach” Tyler. Florence Tyler wrote the dailybridge column for the Cincinnati Inquirer for manyyears and doubtless acquired some of her examplehands from the Thursday afternoon games.Linda Blum Memorial Stratified299er Swiss TeamLinda A. Blum (1944 - 2009) was born inIowa, married Sam Blum and moved to Louisville, and finally settled in Tampa FL. She became anactive and participating member of her Synagogueand local community. While raising a family offour, she never lost sight of her responsibilitiesto all of the organizations she loved. Ultimately, she became the leader and spokesperson ofthese groups. Her influence covered the entiresoutheastern region of the U. S. In her spare time(!) she loved to play bridge. Although her scheduledid not permit steady participation, she played asoften as she could. We all loved her and miss her!Jim Washer MemorialStratified Open PairsBy Ralph LetiziaJim Washer and I ran into each other in theearly Eighties at a local sectional. I had beenplaying for some time and he just decided to showup and see what the game was all about. We foundwe had a myriad of things in common, and soonbecame good friends. Naturally, the conversationdrifted toward bridge and we discussed playingtogether. After a few games, it was clear thatwhile he was quite the novice, he also was veryintelligent and had a real knack for the game.Because I already had several regular partners, Isuggested that he ask other good players for gamesand see where it took him. After about a year or so, we decided to forma team of local players and see what we could do.Amazingly enough, out of five regional knockoutevents, that we played in we won three and finishedsecond in another! Jim played at least half andusually three-fourths of the boards in every match, and we were never behind when he came out.In the early part of this century, he and Idecided to form a partnership so we could playthe Precision Club system. Due to totally differentstyles, we struggled for the first year, and evencontemplated shelving the partnership and justplaying on teams with different people. Wepersisted, however, and eventually developed arock-solid partnership winning many sectional andregional events. Jim liked to play as much bridge aspossible during our local regional tournaments andwas the leading masterpoint winner at least threetimes. His sudden passing in 2009 was a harshblow to all who knew him. His genial smile andwarped humor will always be missed.Friday is Verna’sFun-filled Friday Game DayAveraging 16 to 18 tables, Verna’s Friday gameis always lively. Director Verna Goldberg helpsmake it a fun-filled day. The clever cooks earnedmoney from the Friday players to dedicate this dayto Verna, a special director, mentor, teacher andfriend.MonitoringAt this and future North AmericanChampionships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+events with visible, real-time cameras.
